INTRODUCTION TYPE.—Blotia oblongifolia (Baill.) Leandri, Mém. Blotia is a genus of five closely related species Inst. Sci. Madagascar, Sér. B, Biol. Vég. 8: 240 (1957) [Savia oblongifolia Baili.].—Fig. 1. endemic to Madagascar. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae-Phyllanthoideae and has been placed consistently in the tribe Wielandieae, which is often considered to be the basal tribe of Monoecious trees or shrubs with a weakly devel the subfamily (WEBSTER 1994: 35). Within the oped, simple indumentum. Leaves alternate, Phyllanthoideae, Blotia is identified by the com petiolate, simple, eglandular, blades symmetrical, bination of persistent stipules, finely reticulate entire, pinnately veined, elliptic, ovate or oblong, leaf venation, monoecy, presence of petals, partly apex acuminate to acute (rarely obtuse), base fused filaments, sphaeroidal pollen grains and acute to rounded, not decurrent. The plicate cotyledons led LEANDRI (1957: Stipules persistent. 240) to describe the genus, which he dedicated Inflorescences fasciculate, axillary, borne direct to Madame TARDIEU-BLOT, pteridologist at the ly in the leaf axils or on short, unbranched, leaf Paris Museum.
