When we commemorate Greek Independence Day, we are not simply celebrating the Greek nation’s liberation from its Ottoman oppressors. We are also marking the noble human struggle for freedom against tyranny everywhere in the world, and throughout human history.

As Americans who are immensely proud of our Greek heritage, and with ancestors who actually engaged Ottoman forces in battle, the Rangos Family feels especially cognizant of that struggle and its deeper meaning for humankind.

The Greek Revolution fully demonstrated the greatness of Hellenism and the Hellenic spirit, which has endured from the days of Homer more than 2,800 years ago until well into the 19th and 20th Centuries.

From King Leonidas of Sparta, who stopped the Persian Empire at Thermopylae; to the heroes of 1821, who wrenched Greece free from the fierce grip of after 400 years under brutal Turkish rule; to the Greek Army of the Second World War, which pushed Mussolini’s Forces out of Greece and delayed Hitler’s advance on Russia…

Greece has consistently fought against tyranny time after time. The indomitable Greek spirit has persisted for nearly three millennia. It is simply necessary and right for all of us, Greeks and non-Greeks alike, to honor such tremendous valor. ΖΗΤΩ Η ΕΛΛΑΣ!

The Obama administration on Thursday imposed sanctions on a Greek shipping magnate ac - cused of secretly helping Iran sell its petroleum in defiance of in - ternational restrictions on Iranian oil exports. The Treasury Department identified Dimitris Cambis, owner of a Greek shipping company, as a central figure in a scheme that allegedly enabled Iran to disguise its oil to evade international sanc - tions and an oil embargo. U.S. officials said Cambis and his businesses purchased at least eight oil tankers on Iran’s behalf, filled them with Iranian oil and sold the crude to international customers who were unaware of its origins. Some of the oil was transferred ship to ship in open seas, in tankers that carry up to $200 million worth of crude at a time, the officials said. “Today we are lifting the veil on an intricate Iranian scheme that was designed to evade in - ternational oil sanctions,” said Holocaust survivor Soultana Taraboulous escorted by grandson Greece's Prime Minister speaks at the city's Monastiriotes Synagogue in the David S. In recent interviews, Cambis has acknowl - edged expanding his oil-shipping business but denied that he was working with Iran. In an interview with Bloomberg News on Thursday, Cambis dismissed the U.S. alle - gations as “very bad rumors cre - ated by our competitors because we are trying to take market share.” A senior Obama administra - tion official familiar with the scheme said Cambis essentially went to work for one of Iran’s largest oil companies. The scheme “was designed to hide the fact that the tankers were prop - erty of the Iranian government,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation. “This was a major, not a mar - ginal, step in enforcing our sanc - tions,” said the official, who added that the punitive measures would not affect the Greek gov - ernment, which had a “great partnership” with the United States in the international effort to isolate Iran. Iran, which has seen its oil ex - ports cut in half since the impo - sition of harsh sanctions last sum - mer, is known to have employed a variety of schemes to circum - vent the measures. Last year, in - ternational regulators reported that Iran was turning off the nav - igational transponders on some of its oil tankers at sea, making them harder to track as they search for customers in ports across the Pacific. The restrictions are part of a series of U.S.-backed measures intended to pressure Iran into agreeing to scale back its nuclear program. So far, Iran has refused to accept limits on its nuclear fa - cilities, insisting that its pursuit of nuclear technology is peace - ful. President Obama on Thursday reiterated his pledge to “keep all options on the table” in seeking to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. In an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 television, he said Iran is likely to not pos - sess the capability to make a bomb until 2014. “We think that it would take over a year or so for Iran to actu - ally develop a nuclear weapon, but obviously we don’t want to cut it too close,” said Obama, who gave the interview ahead of a scheduled visit to Israel next week. But now, he said, the pre - ferred path is negotiations. “If we can resolve it diplomat - ically, that’s a more lasting solu - tion,” he said. 14 CYPRUS THE NATIONAL HERALD, MARCH 23-29, 2013 A Small Island Geographically, Cyprus Has Played Big Role in History
