Although studying is the most important part of learning, education is more than just homework. True learning involves all the different aspects of life; the athletic, the spiritual, the musical, the scientific, the social, and the intellectual. As I was trying to do extra-curricular activities and balance these different aspects, I was busy but I was happy. You are fortunate to go to a school that brings all these aspects into your lives as students. A school like Sacred Heart prepares you for happiness in a big sense of the idea. As a student-teacher, I have been most fortunate to work closely with Ms. Potter and Mr. Gallo. I have learned an immense amount from their tried and true experience, their wisdom, and their generosity. Even though teachers are demanding with you, we still learn from you, the students. Understanding how you learn has changed how I teach, and I have become a better teacher from our time together. At Sacred Heart, I taught three grades and I had a memorable experience with each grade. I was pleased to meet the Secondary Is at the beginning of their high school education. We had fun learning how to count centuries, talking about Prehistoric people, and making notes. I was amazed by all the questions you asked in class and by your curiosity. With the Secondary IIs, I was intrigued by how your minds are developing to make you sensitive and capable young women. I really enjoyed our unit on Rome together. The Romans were a powerful civilization with whom we share many connections. And lastly, the Secondary Vs. Your reflections and our discussions in Religion showed me a small glimpse of your souls. Keep striving to work beyond your comfort level and I promise you that you will find happiness after all. Many of your comments on your assignments and in class were a source of happiness for me during these past few months. For the Secondary IIIs and IVs whom I didn’t teach, I tried to get to know you when I helped your teacher and on outings to Ottawa and to the Black Watch regiment. Even in the halls and answering the Faculty Room door, I tried to have meaningful exchanges with you. Short conversations very often can mean a lot. I still have a month left at Sacred Heart and I am trying to go out with a bang. I hope to leave you with something useful and something inspiring for the road ahead. As for your time at Sacred Heart, you will appreciate just how much the school has enriched your life when you are looking back on your high school experience as older ladies. For now, try your best to make the most of your time here. Yours sincerely, Mr. Lamoureux

Mr. Ward, a native Montrealer, joined the Sacred Heart family a little over six years ago, making his cat of 21 years also part of the family for a number of years until it passed away. I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Ward recently. When asked about his favorite part of his job at SHSM he quickly said that working with us girls was the best part. His least favorite part, not surprisingly, is when it is very, very cold outside. Mr. Ward‘s childhood dream job was becoming an architect. When he grew up, he became a MIG Welder and worked for the same company for 31 years. Mr. Ward has met interesting people over the years, including Pierre Elliot Trudeau, whom he met while they were both getting physiotherapy at the Montreal General Hospital. I asked Mr. Ward about his hobbies. He has genuine interests in photography, art, and jazz music; his favorite jazz musician is Oscar Peterson. When he isn’t antique collecting or ensuring our safety, Mr. Ward’s favorite place to be is anywhere near the water. In fact, when asked what he would do if he won the lottery, he said: “A large portion would go to help children through the Montreal Children’s Hospital and I would buy a little country place on the lake.” Mr. Ward is a friendly, patient man who was as nice to interview in the school as he is to chat with in the driveway. He obviously loves his job and his responsibilities. The only things he would like to change about Sacred Heart are to put it on flat ground and give it more parking spaces. I couldn’t agree with him more! Mr. Peter Christopher Ward: the man who loves music and photography, the man who ensures our safety, the man who has our backs. Thanks, Mr. Ward.
