  • Principle 1. Fruit on an Empty Stomach Only
“Pain-Free Eating” Basic Principles: 1. Eat fruit on an empty stomach 2. Eat as much high-water content food (fresh fruits and vegetables) as possible 3. Properly combine your foods 4. Avoid animal products and processed foods 5. Maintain an alkaline pH (7.35 is ideal) Below is a more detailed explanation of each: Principle 1. Fruit on an empty stomach only Fruit is the most perfect food in existence. It’s filled with essential nutrients, is a great energy source and cleanses toxins from the body. It is truly “nature’s candy” and perhaps that’s why so many people eat it as a dessert. Many people claim they can’t eat fruit; that it “doesn’t agree with them. ” In most cases, they are wrong—because it’s almost certain that the problem is not in eating fruit, but in when and how it’s eaten. Fruit is a food mainly made up of water and natural sugars. As such, it doesn’t take much effort for our system to digest it. With the exception of more dense fruits (bananas, avocados and dried fruits), when fresh fruit is eaten, it passes right through the stomach and into the intestines where it’s digested. This is fine when your stomach is empty…but the problems arise when your stomach is full of other foods and is working to digest them and you toss fruit on top of them. At that point, the fruit wants to head to the intestines but its passage is blocked by the other food.

Design A questionnaire was developed incorporating quantified criteria based on current authoritative nutrition guidelines. Twenty two questions were included, relating to nutritional adequacy, daily energy allowance, recommended rate of weight loss, flexibility and sustainability, physical activity advice, use of supplements, claims, author’s credentials, and scientific evidence. The questionnaire was used to rate 35 diets in 20 popular diet books sold in Australia in 2001, in order to test its practicality, validity and sensitivity. A computerised dietary analysis of three days of menus from each book was used to assess the validity of the questions assessing nutritional adequacy.

Steph: Hi Damo, and welcome back to the show. Damo: Thanks, Steph. Great to see you. Thanks for having me again. Steph: Very nice. Not that anyone can see us, but we are nice and snug today, recording- Damo: So close. So close. Steph: We're normally recording virtually, but today we are side by side in Sandringham. Damo: In the flesh. Steph: Absolutely. It's good to literally see you in the flesh. Damo: At the Natural Nutritionist headquarters, HQ. Steph: HQ. But a really cool topic for us today ... It's a topic that I actually get asked about a lot in clinic, and looking forward to hearing your thoughts. The discussion today is all about food combining. So where do you see it as a topic in general, and maybe what your experience was way back when you started practicing? Damo: Way back. Steph: Way back! Damo: You're so old, Damo! Steph: No, that's not what I mean. You're very experienced; you've been practicing such a long time. Damo: A long time. I know. Well, it's funny because in my talk, the Power of Food talk that I do, it's always a question that comes up. "What about food combining? What do you think?" And so then I try and break it down, but back when I first started practicing, it was the go. You always looked out for mixing your starches and your proteins, and your fruits and your proteins, and you were really cautious of doing that. And even when I first was exposed to naturopathy, probably because my mum went to see a naturopath, we did a fit for life program, which was fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch, and a meat meal in the evening.

At that time I observed over and over again how the correct diet, combined with proper herbal medicine and lifestyle, can play a vital role in healing. I became increasingly aware that illness provides an "invitation" to change one's habitual patterns related to thinking, feeling and feeding ourselves properly. My outlook began to move from the commonly used labels for an ill- ness, such as "this is influenza or that is a virus," to the inner sense of how that illness manifested according to basic Ayurvedic theories. I incorpo- rated a deeper and subtler understanding of the interplay of the doshas in health and disease and of how nature's gentle source of healing with herbs and food can bring healing and balance. As my awareness grew about the role of food as medicine, I observed that many health problems seemed intertwined with the stresses of daily life. These include worries about one's job or money tension and even the stress created by eating the wrong kinds of food and improper food combining.

Old Shaker Hymn Favorite of Dr. Isabelle Moser I was a physically tough, happy-go-lucky fellow until I reached my late thirties. Then I began to experience more and more off days when I did not feel quite right. I thought I possessed an iron constitution. Although I grew a big food garden and ate mostly "vegetablitarian" I thought I could eat anything with impunity. I had been fond of drinking beer with my friends while nibbling on salty snacks or heavy foods late into the night. And until my health began to weaken I could still get up the next morning after several homebrewed beers, feeling good, and would put in a solid day's work. When my health began to slip I went looking for a cure. Up to that time the only use I'd had for doctors was to fix a few traumatic injuries.
