Title LIETUVI Ų MODERNIOSIOS TAUTOS TAPSMAS Title in English HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN LITHUANIAN NATION Subject annotation in English The course deals with the problems of studying and analyzing the concepts of nation and modern nation, ethno-social situation in the ethnic Lithuanian territories. Concepts of nation and modern nation. Review of historiography of the history of ethnic Lithuanian renaissance. Ethno-political and ethno-social situation in the ethnic Lithuanian territories in the 18 th - 19 th c.c. The policy of Russification after the revolt in 1831. Beginning of the renaissance movement among the ethnic Lithuanians. The policy of Russification after the revolt in 1863. Ethnic movement of the Lithuanians in the second part of the 19 th c. Process of formation of political identities. Necessary background knowledge for the study of the subject Selecting this subject should be completed in the first two years of the history of bachelor study program. Study outcomes of the subject At the end of the course students will be able: • to identify and to interpret the fundamental concepts of nationalism studies and the methodological problems of their researches. • to know and to understand the main things about development, expressions and transformation issues of Lithuanian national identities, • to describe the historiographical problems of the development of modern Lithuanian nation in the 19 th c. and nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe, • critically evaluate and interpret the main sources of the development of modern Lithuanian nation in the 19 th c.; to analyze the main discourses, • to describe and to understand the expressions and specific features of political, social, economic, cultural processes held in ethnic in the 19 th c.; to describe and to understand their effects on the Lithuanian identity change, cultural movements and the formation of political institutions, • independently formulate and analyze the problems of the study in the context of the development of modern Lithuanian nation. Subject contents I. The theoretical concepts of nationalism. The concepts of nationalism, as national revolution. II. Historiography of the development of modern Lithuanian nation in the 19 th c. The main dimensions of the historiographical problems. The concepts of the Renaissance Studies of the development of modern Lithuanian nation. III. The identity of developments: from ethno-social to ethno-cultural identity. The lituanistic renaissance movements of nobility and their role to the development of nation. The effect of the Catholic church. The activity of M. Valan čius in the studies of historians. IV. The policy of Russia in Lithuania on "warming" time. Genesis of the prohibition of the press in Latin font: the directions of issues and researches. V. Political, social and economic changes in Lithuania in the second part of the 19 th c. The analysis of Colportation movement: incentives, leadership, organization, scale and form. VI. From ethno-cultural to ethno-political movement. Goals, programs, forms, and ideology of action and organization of Lithuanian intelligentsia movement. The establishment of political parties. The targets, ideology, programs and activities of political parties and groups. The provisions of the political parties in the national and state recovery issues. VII. The idea of Lithuanian congress and its realization. The projection of Statehood at the time of congress. The Great in and its meaning in the process of nation modernization.
