VAT No: 215 607 329 Company No: 09503706 Dão is a region situated in the Região Demarcada do Dão with the Dão-Lafões sub region of Centro . It is one of the oldest established wine regions in Portugal. Dão wine is produced in a mountainous region with a temperate climate, in the area of the Rio Mondego and Dão rivers in the north central region of Portugal. It became a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) appellation in 1990. The region is the origin of the vine that is the principal component of . This major region is in the heart of the Beira Alta and produces many red and white wines. The Dão region is to the east of the Bairrada region being geographically larger in size and covering 16 municipalities in the area between Viseu, Guarda and Coimbra. The vines are grown in valleys on slopes starting at an altitude of 200 mts. up to about 500 mts. The soil is basically granite which favours the red varieties. The reds are strong, deep in colour and full-bodied. The whites tend to be aromatic and fruity and some are bottled as sparkling .

The vines in the Bairrada region are generally grown on flat land in a region that is a major producer of Portugal. It is located on the Atlantic coastal plain, lying slightly inland from the sea to the town of Aveiro and then south down to the town of Coimbra. The red wine produced here is noted for its smoothness and suavity, deep in colour and full-bodied, acquiring a brownish hue as it ages. The white wines are fairly robust, fruity, with a hint of lemon. The rosé ranges in colour and are fresh and fruity. Sparkling wines are produced in white and rosé and range from “Brut” to “Medium Dry”. For traditionalists, the grape of choice in the Bairrada region is Baga; a grape variety notoriously difficult to ripen, which needs lots of aging to round off, usually in the local wood type barrels rather than American or French , but the hard work is worth it by far and comes recommended: the older the better. It is sometimes referred to as the Alto Douro (upper Douro), as it is located some distance upstream from , sheltered by mountain ranges with coastal influence. The region has Portugal’s highest wine classification as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). While the region is associated primarily with Port, in a relatively short period of time, the Douro has established itself as Portugal’s premium wine region. It’s hard to overstate the scale and pace of change that is currently taking place in this most spectacular of wine regions. has always been made here but were secondary to the requirements of Port producers. In recent years, a critical mass of like-minded winemakers has emerged who are passionate about making the very best wines that these remarkable are capable of.

A long, thin region running up the Atlantic coast from the capital Lisbon, formerly known as Estremadura. Famous for it’s medieval castles and legendary tales of heroism but, most importantly, considered a mecca for Portuguese wine back in the 19th century. Stretching along the Atlantic coast, the Lisboa wine region is the second largest wine producing region in Portugal, covering approximately 311,000 hectoliters in 2006. The landscape contains everything from undulating lush green terrains to steep and desolate mountain ranges of Candeeiros and Montejunto; it’s a place you want to rent a car and get lost in. The Vinho Regional Lisboa incorporates nine DOC regions making it the most confusing of all Portugal’s wine regions for the non-Portuguese consumer. Generally known and appreciated usually in terms of volume if nothing else have been overthrown by some new impressive wines emerging at both the quality and volume ends of the market. The Denomination of Origin of Tejo has six sub-regions (Almeirim, Cartaxo, Chamusca, Coruche, Santarém and Tomar). The soils vary according to their proximity to the sea. Marshlands are very fertile areas located by the river. Tejo’s floods tend to completely immerse the fields. Tejo has been famous for producing large quantities of wine that would supply restaurants and taverns in Lisbon. Its large agricultural holdings would seek to obtain the maximum profit from the vines and produce low quality wine to be sold in bulk. The region has undergone significant changes over the last 15 years, not only in the fields but also in the wineries. Many vines were transferred from the fields near the sea to the ones inland which has lowered production, but increased quality.

The has led the way in Portugal’s wine revolution. Aside from the many tourist attractions in the region (such as the towns of Evora, Borba and Estremoz), it is wine that is currently putting the Alentejo region on the map and more specifically, its red wines. There are two distinct styles of Alentejo red; firstly, there is what can loosely be termed the traditional style which often combines earthy, herbal, undergrowth-like savoury flavours and aromas with the fruit. Traditional Alentejo wines are often complex and reasonably age worthy. Then there is the modern style which show lots of intense fruit, with a richness that is quite ‘new world’ in character and not a million miles away from the style that has made Australian wines such a success over recent years. Both Alentejo styles are both interesting and worthwhile, but it is the latter, more modern group of wines that has been largely responsible for putting the Alentejo on the map as one of Portugal’s most important red wine regions. The vines grow in fertile, granite soils along rivers that flow from the mountains of the east to burst out into the ocean between golden surfing beaches. The outer boundaries of both the “Vinho Regional” Minho and DOC Vinho Verde are the same, stretching from the River Minho in the north, which forms Portugal’s border with Spain, as far down the coast as the city of Porto (Oporto), but inland extending a further 30km south of the river Douro. Vinho Verde is a unique product, misunderstood by some but loved by many. With a blend of aromas and pettiance that makes it a delicious natural beverage. Medium in alcohol, it has great digestive properties due to its freshness, slight fizz and special qualities. It is a highly regarded wine, especially when served chilled for Summer drinking. The malo-lactic fermentation gives it a distinctive taste and personality. The strong distinctive character and originality are the result of soil and climate characteristics, social-economic elements, grape varieties and the vine growing methods.

This is a small, remote, mountainous region in the north of the VR Beiras, bordering on the Douro to the north and the Dão region to the south. The climate is continental, with extremes of temperature where vines grow at 500 to 800 metres above sea level on granite or schist soils. At this altitude, the grapes retain good acidity and fruit, so are perfect for producing sparkling wines. Indeed, this was the first region in Portugal to be demarcated for sparkling wines in 1989. Malvasia Fina accounts for about half of older , along with Bical, Cerceal, Fernão Pires and Gouveio, while major reds are Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. For nearly a century, Távora- Varosa has also had significant plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (two of the major grapes of the region of France) and more are being planted. With an admiring eye on the success of the Douro producers to the north, Távora-Varosa producers have also been planting more of the top Portuguese red grapes, such as Touriga Franca, which ripen less well in these conditions, however.
