Nadezhdina _________________________ Moscow, 2011 This syllabus can not be used by other divisions of the university and other educational institutions without the permission of the developing department. 1 1 Purpose and normative references This syllabus establishes minimum requirements for a student’s knowledge and skills and determines the content and types of educational activities and assessments. The syllabus is designed for instructors, teaching assistants, and students of the course within the 040100.62 discipline, namely “sociological theory.” The syllabus is developed in compliance with: ● The original educational standard of the National Research Institute — Higher School of Economics for sociology. ● Educational curriculum of the discipline #040100.62, Sociology. ● Working curriculum of the NRI—HSE for the discipline #040100.62, Sociology, undergraduate training, ratified in 2011. 2 Objectives of the course The main objective of the course is to introduce the fundamental principles, concepts, and theories of sociology and to help students learn the basic elements of professional culture and sociological reasoning skills used when analyzing various phenomena and events. The course acquaints students with works by reputed sociologists of the past and the present. Additionally, this course prepares students for a further, deeper study of special sociological disciplines and fields of sociological knowledge. 3 Student competences formed as a result of this course As a result of having taken this course a student shall: Know: ● Basic principles and concepts of theoretical sociology; ● Major classical and contemporary sociological theories and schools; ● Theoretical premises of applied sociological disciplines; ● Basic patterns to be observed in complex social processes and the functional mechanisms of basic social units; ● Basic theoretical models and research methods that describe social action, social perception, communication and interaction at macro- and microlevels. Be able to: ● Use acquired skills to analyze facts and real-life events from the standpoint of sociology; ● Use acquired skills to conceptualize and solve social problems. Have had experience of: ● Working with scholarly literature in sociology, including that in foreign languages; ● Performing information search on sociological topics; ● Composing book reviews, essays, surveys, simple academic papers; ● Making oral presentations on a specific topic.     Comparing Capitalisms through the Lens of Classical Sociological Theory1 Gregory Jackson 1 Introduction The ‘classical tradition’ in sociology, stemming from Marx, Durkheim, and We- ber, continues to inspire sociological approaches to the economy (Beckert 2002; Swedberg 2000). Despite its foundational infl uence, the distinctively sociologi- cal contribution of this ‘classical’ tradition has been somewhat overshadowed by the widespread diffusion of economic theory, such as transaction costs or agency theory, and newer sociological approaches, such as network analysis or ‘new institutionalism’ in organizational analysis, in the process of forging inter- disciplinary approaches to the economy. In honor of the sixtieth birthday of Wolfgang Streeck, this essay looks at his contribution to economic sociology and its relationship to classical sociological theory. Wolfgang Streeck has retained and developed a distinctly sociological approach to the study of the economy that draws important inspiration from the classics. His closeness to the classic sociological tradition is perhaps unsur- prising given his early journey as a student in the 1970s from the ‘critical theory’ found in Frankfurt to the then often more ‘middle range’ concerns of sociology pursued at Columbia University by infl uential fi gures such as Robert Merton, Peter Blau, and Amitai Etzioni. Wolfgang Streeck was excited by the empiri- cal richness of early American sociology, as is evident in his subsequent edited volume Elementare Soziologie (1976). Alongside Durkheim, Weber, and Friedrich Engels, the book translated writings of postwar American sociologists such as Peter Blau, Alvin Gouldner, Howard Becker, and William Whyte. However, the focus was not on positivist empirical sociology, but on the way these sociologists utilized fundamental theoretical concepts, such as confl ict, exchange, or status, to inform their detailed empirical or even ethnographic fi eldwork.

    NPTEL – Humanities and Social Sciences – Introduction to Sociology Lecture 1: Origin of Sociology as a Discipline Sociology is the study of human social life. Because human social life is so expansive, sociology has many sub-sections of study, ranging from the analysis of conversations to the development of theories to try to understand how the entire world works. This lecture will introduce you to sociology and explain why it is important, how it can change your perspective on the world around you, and give a brief history of the discipline. What is Sociology? The social world is changing. Some argue it is growing; others say it is shrinking. The important point to grasp is: society does not remain unchanged over time. As will be discussed in more detail below, sociology has its roots in significant societal changes (e.g., the industrial revolution, the creation of empires, and the enlightenment of scientific reasoning). Early practitioners developed the discipline as an attempt to understand societal changes. Some early sociological theorists (e.g., Marx, Weber, and Durkheim) were disturbed by the social processes they believed to be driving the change, such as the quest for solidarity, the attainment of social goals, and the rise and fall of classes, to name a few examples. While details of the theories that these individuals developed are discussed in the last module, it is important to note at this point that the founders of sociology were some of the earliest individuals to employ what C. Wright Mills (1959) labeled the sociological imagination: the ability to situate personal troubles within an informed framework of social issues.

Further Notes on Why American Sociology Abandoned Mass Communication Research Abstract Communication research seems to be flourishing, as vidente in the number of universities offering degrees in communication, number of students enrolled, number of journals, and so on. The field is interdisciplinary and embraces various combinations of former schools of journalism, schools of speech (Midwest for ‘‘rhetoric’’), and programs in sociology and political science. The field is linked to law, to schools of business and health, to cinema studies, and, increasingly, to humanistically oriented programs of so-called cultural studies. All this, in spite of having been prematurely pronounced dead, or bankrupt, by some of its founders. Sociologists once occupied a prominent place in the study of communication— both in pioneering departments of sociology and as founding members of the interdisciplinary teams that constituted departments and schools of communication. In the intervening years, we daresay that media research has attracted rather little attention in mainstream sociology and, as for departments of communication, a generation of scholars brought up on interdisciplinarity has lost touch with the disciplines from which their teachers were recruited.

Choreographer interview The analytical core for sociological theory proposed in the previous chap- ter includes a rational actor model inspired by Talcott Parsons’ voluntaristic theory of action (1937). My elaboration of this model, however, followed a differentpath from that taken by Parsons in his later work, which wandered away from the microfoundations of human behavior into the dusty realm of structural-functionalism. Big mistake. This chapter explains where and speculates why Parsons went wrong. Briefly, between writing The Structure of Social Action in 1937 and the publication of The Social System and Toward a General Theory of Action in 1951, Parsons abandoned the stress on individual efficacy of his early work (e.g., in his critique of positivism and behaviorism) in favor of treating the individual as the effect of socialization that when successful produces social order, and when unsuccessful produces social pathology. In The Structure of Social Action, Parsons mentions the term “socialization” only once, writing (pp. 400–401): Ultimate values of the individualmembers of the same commu- nity must be, to a significant degree, integrated into a system common to these members...not only moral attitudes but even the logical thought on which morality depends only develop as an aspect of the process of socialization of the child.

This is merely an elementary guide to help with understanding the larger concepts found within the field of sociology. What is Sociology? Sociology is the scientific study of society and human behavior (Henslin 2003: GL-13). What is the field of Sociology? The field of sociology is the professional application of scientific and humanistic approaches to the understanding of society and human behavior. It is a science based profession used to understand the social and human condition. Sociologist, C. Wright Mills (1959) in his text, The Sociological Imagination, encourages readers to think about the relationship between themselves and the society in which they reside. Mills espouses that we are innately influenced by the larger society and the historical context in which we find ourselves. What is the unit of analysis in sociology? The unit of analysis in sociology can range from the individual person to a large group of persons. The unit of analysis can be one to a whole society. Different theoretical perspectives within sociology focus on different units of analysis. Sociologists use the terms Micro, Mezzo, and Macro to define what level of analysis is being utilized. What are the major theoretical orientations in the field of sociology? There is debate in the field of sociology as to what are the major theoretical orientations that guide the profession. These debates merit attention to those within the field, however, sociologists would generally state that the profession is primarily focused on three theoretical orientations.

Koichiro Misawa Word Count (exclusive of bibliography): 79, 795 words 2 Abstract This thesis addresses the social dimensions of human knowledge by reference to recent developments in the theory of knowledge in the Anglophone analytical tradition. What might be called social epistemology is often open to the charge of relativism. However, a detailed analysis of the most basic conditions of knowledge that enable human beings to live as not merely evolved, biological creatures but as intellectual, sentient beings reveals the sense in which human knowledge is essentially social and has no necessary connection either with relativism or with the opposing but equally tenuous ideas such as strong realism and scientific naturalism. The social and pragmatic dimensions of human knowledge shed light on its essentially educational nature. This broad sense of educational aspect of knowledge encourages us to see the prevailing outlook towards the relation between philosophy and education quite differently. This is not to suggest that the philosophy of education finds a new niche in academia but rather to suggest that it form the centrepiece of the philosophical enquiry into human knowledge. Having set the scene for the subsequent chapters in Chapter 1, this thesis goes on to analyse several issues to do with human knowledge and education.

Donnermeyer, Adviser ___________________________ Professor Jeff Sharp Advisers Rural Sociology Graduate Program ABSTRACT The current diversity in the rural population of America creates problems for the proper interpretation of attitudes towards agriculture and related environmental issues. Most previous sociological studies of perceptions or attitudes about agriculture and the environment have been largely descriptive and have attempted to distinguish varying perceptions based on rural and urban residence alone. No major studies have attempted to examine the place of vested interest and social distance in understanding these attitudes. This dissertation goes beyond mere descriptive analysis of empirical data, by evoking the middle-range conception of Robert K. Merton, which incorporates both a theoretical dialogue and empirical evidence to analyze varying attitudes about agriculture and related environmental issues. Based on a vested interest approach, this study draws from functionalist and conflict theories as well as rational choice and exchange theory. The data used in this study is derived from a 2002 statewide survey of 4031 Ohio households. The results of this study suggest that residence, social connections and social -i i - activities play an important role in the formation of perceptions and attitudes about agriculture and related environmental issues.

    RESTORING THE REAL: RETHINKING SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIVIST THEORIES OF SCIENCE Meera Nanda As we come to recognize the conventional and artifactual status of our forms of knowing, [we realize] that it is ourselves and not reality that is responsible for what we know. (Stevan Shapin and Simon Schaffer, 1985) It always seems to me extreme rashness on the part of some when they want to make human abilities the measure of what nature can do. (Gaiileo Galilei, Dialogues Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, 1632) Introduction One of the oldest urges in Western intellectual tradition is to think that reality and truth should coincide, that our knowledge be certified in the end by the structure of reality itself. Modern science, which best embodies this urge, aims at justified knowledge which can faithfully track the contours of the natural world. The logic of science, however, has been severely challenged by a set of doctrines which deny that what we take as scientific facts bear any necessary relation to the causal processes and theoretical entities they claim to describe. Often referred to as 'social construction of science' or 'sociology of scientific knowledge,' these doctrines claim that because science's methods, like any other way of knowing, are wholly relative to a theoretical framework and a world-view, science amounts to a construction, and not a discovery, of reality: we know what we ourselves construct and there can be no warrant that our constructs can progressively come to map the world as it really is.
