HHAPPYAPPY NNEWEW YYEAREAR!!

Editorial. Hope you have all recovered from the Christmas excesses and your New Year resolutions are not too onerous. The PAD Fund is within less than £500 of our target. So a final push with our Cider and Pasty Quiz evening, with your help, should see us reach our total, the details of which are on page 13. We hope you can all come and support us. Ann Cross has given us her monthly views on page 10. Philip Uglow, our Parish Council Chairperson, has written a report of the last meeting of the Council. Included are the details of the next meeting. Alison Hoather is starting a new group at Eden Chap- el, the details of which are on page 23. Gill has given us some seasonal poems on page 26. Peter Dymond of Ashfield has posted his thanks for all your support for his Tractor Rally in aid of the Air Ambulance, details of which are on page 37. Glenton Brown, our County Councillor, has a report on page 32. Bev Willis is promoting a Floral group the details of which are on page 35. Louise Cowling’s Girl Guides have been busy, a re- port of which is on page 31. Lastly if you think you may have an unwanted Christmas gift that could be donated to the Cider & Pasty evening raffle please leave them with Thelma Balsdon at Orchard House. All donations will be gratefully received. Best wishes for the New Year. GJB

CANWORTHY WATER SOLAR FARM COMMUNITY FUND

At last the four local parishes have reached an agreement with Primrose Solar regarding the Canworthy Water Solar Farm Community Fund. All the paperwork has been signed and a new bank account set up to hold and manage the funds. The next job for the Parish Council is to decide the nature of the projects to be supported and the procedures that we will need to adopt to administer the fund. The fund will receive £10,000 in 2016 followed by 18 annual payments of £1,200 between 2017 and 2035. In 2036 there will be a final payment of £2,500. Our thanks to David Uglow for representing us at the meetings with Primrose Solar and securing the money for Warbstow Parish. Once agreed the details of how this fund is to be managed will be published in the Warbstow and District Newsletter and on the Parish Council website.

DOG POOH BINS

The start of the another New Year could not pass without the mention of dog pooh. This delicate subject continues to be mentioned at Parish Council meetings. We have contacted to see if it will be possible for a dog pooh bin to be installed either at the entrance to the Community Centre or by the bench opposite Rose Cottage. Neither location is ideal but they are both central within the village and probably offer the most

appropriate locations.

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING

The next meeting of the Warbstow Parish Council is to be held on Tuesday 2nd February at 7.30 pm at Canworthy Water Sunday School. As usual any thoughts you have on these or other issues will be appreciated and can be emailed to me at [email protected] .

Finally Warbstow Parish Council would like to wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Philip Uglow - Chairperson

POEMS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Below are some favourite poems of mine to start the year of 2016. Perhaps you have some special poems about the coming months that you might like to be included in future editions of the Warbstow News. If you do, email Gerry or myself at the address at the front of the magazine or post them through the door of Gardenview. It would be great to have some fresh ideas.

Happy New Year!

To The New Year by William Stanley Merwin

With what stillness at last you appear in the valley your first sunlight reaching down to touch the tips of a few high leaves that do not stir as though they had not noticed and did not know you at all then the voice of a dove calls from far away in itself

to the hush of the morning

so this is the sound of you here and now whether or not anyone hears it this is where we have come with our age our knowledge such as it is and our hopes such as they are invisible before us untouched and still possible

Pullitzer Prize for Poetry.

January by John Updike

The days are short, The sun a spark, Hung thin between

The dark and dark.

Fat snowy footsteps Track the floor. Milk bottles burst

Outside the door.

The river is A frozen place Held still beneath

The trees of lace.

The sky is low. The wind is gray. The radiator

Purrs all day.

John Updike was an American novelist, poet, short story writer, art critic, and literary critic.

The Darkling Thrush by Thomas Hardy

I leant upon a coppice gate When Frost was spectre-gray, And Winter’s dregs made desolate The weakening eye of day. The tangled bine-stems scored the sky Like strings of broken lyres, And all mankind that haunted nigh Had sought their household fires.

The land’s sharp features seemed to be The Century’s corpse outleant, His crypt the cloudy canopy, The wind his death-lament. Cont…..

The ancient pulse of germ and birth Was shrunken hard and dry, And every spirit upon earth

Seemed fervourless as I.

At once a voice arose among The bleak twigs overhead In a full-hearted evensong Of joy illimited; An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small, In blast-beruffled plume, Had chosen thus to fling his soul

Upon the growing gloom.

So little cause for carolings Of such ecstatic sound Was written on terrestrial things Afar or nigh around, That I could think there trembled through His happy good-night air Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew

And I was unaware.

The guides have been having lots of fun recently, going for an evening walk down the canal path from Hele Bridge to Bude in the dark, eating some chips in the crescent car park then walking back along the canal path. They have also been busy making Christmas crafts and enjoyed an evening bowling, ending with a promise ceremony on the beach by torch light. We have been fundraising for 5 girls and 2 leaders who are joining a district trip to Switzerland in April 2016, holding a big breakfast, coffee mornings, a bingo evening completing a sponsored swim, as well as receiving donations from Bude Carnival committee, Launceston Lions and others.

We are delighted that we have been able to reopen our Rainbow unit, so if you have a daughter aged 5-7 years who is interested in joining please get in contact with either Mary on 01840 230006 or Helena on 07966484690 alternatively register her interest in joining at http:// www.girlguiding.org.uk/get_involved.aspx.

We have found a leader eager to set up a Brownie unit (for girls aged 7 – 10 years), so watch out for further details. If you are interested in volunteer- ing to help with the unit please do get in touch. Louise Cowling

I expect you have all heard on the radio or read in the press the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer for Cornwall Council. Catherine Kennally has been duly appointed and will take up her duties in January 2016. She comes from the London Borough of Barnet and has progressed her career rapidly over the last 10 years, and is in complete agreement with our policy for devolution, mixed services, and especially anything to do with the service departments for the people of Cornwall.

At the last full council at County Hall, on 24th November there were 14 motions for members to discuss and vote on. I will share one or two which may be of interest to you. The first motion, which was most enthusiastically supported and passed, was the lowering of the voting age to 16. This, of course, means that every young person aged 16 or over can vote! When you consider the intense study and examinations our young people have passed by the age of 16 and continue to do for the following three or four years at least, one realises how well informed our young people are. One hopes this will be an incentive for them to use their vote and feel a valued citizen of the . Another motion passed was for parent and toddler car parking spac- es to be made available in Cornwall Council car parks. This incentive is being developed by the transport policy advisory committee. The Cornwall Council car parks scheme was passed but there is still some administration work to be implemented. The 5th December was a free car parking day in all car parks throughout the County as an incentive for people to do their Christmas shop- ping! A motion was passed with regard to Council owned homes not being used for residential use. In some instances houses have been used for storage and office accommodation. This motion is going to be thoroughly examined by the Housing and Environment Policy Committee. Another motion you will be pleased to hear was that the Council voted to ban sky lanterns from Council property. In reality, although these lanterns look extremely attractive in the night sky, unfortunately, they fall into fields where livestock can chew them and swallow sharp wire etc, and they are also a particularly high risk to thatched cottages. There was only one vote against this motion. Council then went on to discuss the Police and Crime revision formula which is proposing drastic cuts to funding the Police Service in Cont….

Page 20

……. Devon and Cornwall, which would result in losing all our PCSOs which I think would be a great disappointment indeed. Mr Hogg, our Crime Commissioner, does deserve some credit in spearheading and gaining some support from other officers to make the Government think again about the extra chunk of money they were going to take from the Police Service. Also the Council is continuing to look into the removal of business rates from public conveniences in Cornwall. I am sure this will come to pass but it is taking ra- ther a long time.

May I take this opportunity of wishing you all good health and progress in 2016.

It also goes without saying that if you wish to contact me my email address is [email protected] and my telephone number is 01840 770302.

WWARBSTOWARBSTOW FFLORALLORAL AARTRT GGROUPROUP

Our group was formed last year following two successful flower festivals at Warbstow Church in 2013 and 2014. For most of us, it was our first experience of floral art, but we felt that we wanted to learn more. We were lucky enough to have two members who were more experienced and so, throughout 2015, we have improved our skills and produced some amazing displays for our own homes and the church. Another successful flower festival was held in Warbstow Church. Local support for our flower festivals has been extraordinary and we have been able to raise money for the church and the defibrillator fund.

The 2016 flower festival will be held in Warb- stow Church from Friday 17th June to Monday 20th June inclusive. We will be celebrating Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday and each display will depict a decade of her life from the 1920s to the present day. Please make a note of this in your diaries. More information will be given nearer the time.

This year, we would like to place container displays on the pathways approaching the church. With this in mind, I would like to ask all you gardeners out there if you could spare some bedding plants, pots, etc. which can be prepared beforehand. Any help with this task would also be appreciated. Alternatively, you may be able to loan us some ready planted

containers. Please contact me if you think that you can help.

Our group meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month commencing at 2pm. In January we will be setting up our programme for the year. We meet in our various members homes so if you think you would like to join us, please ring for a chat or send an email for the location of the next get together.

Warbstow, Eden and District Youth Club would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy 2016.

We return on Friday January 8th with special guest Scott Mann MP. If you have any questions for our local MP, he has promised to be with us from

7.30pm, you are very welcome to join us.

We are hoping to spend the day at Eden project either the 16th or 17th Jan- uary and hopefully ice skate at the end of the day. We have also been in- vited to tell our local Parish Council what we get up to and thank them for their support. In February we are hoping to go to the Hall for Cornwall and see Roald Dahl’s The Witches. At the moment the time and date is still to be confirmed.

We have lots to look forward to. Come and join us. Help us plan for our next great adventure, whilst enjoying fun, games, the skate board ramp; films, music, Wii games and refreshments.

Parents if you think we are too far out to drop and pick up your younglings then you are welcome to stay for a chat and refreshments.

I would like to finally introduce the name of my wildlife rescue “Wildthingz” at Canworthy Water.

Many of you have been supporng me by giving all your newspapers. Please keep them coming!!!!!!

I would like to also say PLEASE can I ask you NOT to give the shredded paper anymore. I have learnt quite recently that office paper is too sharp to use on hedgehogs as it cuts their legs (Like paper cuts). So just normal newspapers please!!!!

A massive thank you to everyone who pops by regularly to deliver but I rarely get to see you. Any wildlife in trouble emergency number 07508532811 or 01566 781671 24hr answer phone

TTHELMAHELMA''SS DDIARYIARY

31st October Visited Golitha Falls and Minions and The Hurlers. The stones at The Hurlers, a perfect place for grandchildren to play hide

and seek.

7th November Barnstaple Queen's Theatre - show, “That'll be the day”. A super birthday present. Great music and comedy. Will try

and book when it's in our area again.

11th November A revamp of the Church Vestry. Moving cupboards etc. The song "Right said Fred" sprang to mind! "Right said Fred, both of us together, one each end, and steady as we go".

Substituting Ian and Graham for Fred. End result, excellent.

12th November School bring and buy. Busy, with lots of things to buy.

18th November Warbstow school assembly. A really enjoyable afternoon. Children very confident entertaining us with music. Lovely!

9th December School play. Two plays, A little bird told us and Matilda.. So good, went again on the following night.

15th December Warbstow school carol concert at the Church. As always, a really special occasion. Church full.

17th December Christmas concert at The Minstrels Centre. A great evening's

entertainment with seasonal music, and also food!

Diary closed for Christmas. Happy New Year!
