Plunging Your Past

“Why do you dunk people? Why can’t we just be sprinkled and call it a day?” “Do I have to be baptized right away or can I wait awhile before I do it? “I was baptized as a baby. Do I have to do it again?” “Why should we be baptized when we give our heart to Jesus? 1. The first reason is this: the one you say you’re following told you to Matthew 28:18-20 (NLT), “Jesus came and told his disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” Mark 16:14-16 (NCV), “Later Jesus showed himself to the eleven apostles while they were eating, and he criticized them because they had no faith. They were stubborn and refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen from the dead. Jesus said to his followers, ‘Go every- where in the world, and tell the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved, but anyone who does not believe will be punished.’” Acts 2:36-38 (NLT), “‘So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!’ Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’ Peter replied, ‘Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” ______Sermon Outline

2. Baptism was the practice of the first Christians Acts 2:38-41 (NLT), “Peter replied, ‘Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, and to your children, and even to the Gen- tiles—all who have been called by the Lord our God.’ Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, ‘Save yourselves from this crooked generation!’ Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.” Acts 8:12 (NCV), “But when Philip told them the Good News about the kingdom of God and the power of Jesus Christ, men and women believed Philip and were baptized.” Acts 8:36-38, “While they were traveling down the road, they came to some water. The officer said, ‘Look, here is water. What is stopping me from being baptized?’ Philip answered, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you can.’ The officer said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ Then the officer commanded the chariot to stop. Both Philip and the officer went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.” John 14:15 (NCV), "If you love me, you will obey my commands." ______3. Because it’s a symbol of our death and resurrection in Christ ______Romans 6:3-4 (NLT), “Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.” Colossians 2:12 (NLT), “For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (CEV), “Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgot- ten, and everything is new.” ______Sermon Outline

Reflection… John 3:5-7 (CEV), “I tell you for certain that before you can get into God’s kingdom, you must be born not only by water, but by the Spirit. Humans give life to their children. Yet only God’s Spirit can change you into a child of God. Don’t be surprised when I say that you must be born from above.” ______
