UK Sourced and Grown Extra security against tree pests and diseases

Imported pests and diseases are a signifcant threat to our native trees. The UK Sourced and Grown Assurance Scheme (UKSG) is a voluntary initiative for forest nurseries that identifes the provenance of seeds and trees. It assures buyers that stock has been raised from seed sourced and grown solely within the for its entire lifespan. While not a licensed industry standard, it is the benchmark for tree procurement at the Woodland Trust – a major wholesale buyer of native UK trees. We’re proud to buy British and believe strongly that all new trees planted in UK woodlands and forests should be UKSG assured.

How does it work? Independent auditors work with the Woodland Trust to inspect and designate participating nurseries, meaning all saplings sold as UKSG are independently audited at every stage of their production.

Qualifying stock is classed as UKSG, enabling buyers to clearly identify where native trees are sourced and grown, and allowing them to specify UKSG stock when ordering from suppliers. The scheme is free, and participating nurseries are not excluded from growing non-UKSG stock.

What are the benefts? • Protect the future of your business. Reduce the reliance on imported planting stock and the risk of introducing foreign pests and diseases to your nursery. • Safeguard native trees. Do your bit to complement the biosecurity measures already in place to prevent the spread of introduced pests and diseases to native UK trees. • Tap into a growing market. Supply the demand for locally sourced and grown stock of known provenance at no extra cost. 13
