Roselani Scene May “Mei”

Aloha from our General Manager May Day is Day in . . . I have always loved the simple beauty of leis, its es- sence and its importance to the people of Ha- waii. Every year on May 1st we get to celebrate Lei Day as it was invented in 1927. Back then Don Bland- ing wrote an article in the local newspaper suggesting Inside this issue that a holiday be created around the Hawaiian custom of making and wearing a lei. Over nine decades later Message from General Manager the lei continues to be adorned here and around the world. It is culturally Covid-19 Updates an iconic symbol to our state and its necklace shape is like life coming to Events Highlights in Brief full circle. Picnic For Poki Cancelled Saint Damien Day Earlier this year I can attest to an occasion where I had a moment my life May Day is Lei Day came in to full circle. It did not occur to me until one of our residents In Memory Of . . . placed a green ti leaf lei on me with rose shaped ti leaves on New Year’s Calendar of Events Day. Our resident was wearing a red muumuu just like she wore on my This day in history wedding day. And it was the same green ti leaf lei with rose shaped ti Sudoku & Word Search leaves she adorned my husband and I on our wedding day back in 2008. Birthdays Employee of the Month Our resident, Asano, was one of four ukulele players from Kaunoa Senior Mother’s Day Luncheon Center to play at our wedding reception. She donned a beautiful red muu- Charity Walk Postponed muu and sang and played her ukulele effortlessly. I never saw her after our wedding day until I returned to work at Roselani Place again. The moment she placed the green ti lei on New Year’s Day I exclaimed “Asano! You were at my wedding and this is déjà vu. You gave me this lei before.” Asano paused for a moment and said “that was you?!” We Editor: Diane Alba-Means were both overcome with emotion as we realized it was fate that brought us together again. My love for a lei brought forth an artistic professional lei maker from Pukalani to be at my wedding day. Now I get to share my love for leis with my resident. What a true blessing!

Although a lei lasts only a while, the thought lasts forever. I will never forget this moment and neither will Asano as it has created a bond be- tween us that only a lei can do.

Mahalo Asano for allowing me to share our hoaloha (friendship). And wishing everyone a very special Mother’s Day. Mom, I love you!

Covid-19 Measures Update - April 25, 2020

To all of our residents, families, staff, and visitors, we hope this letter finds you all doing well and staying safe. It has been a trying 8 weeks for all of us, and we appreciate the patience you have shown to one another, to our dedicated and caring staff, as well as your family members near and far.

In light of the communal nature and the health status of many people we serve, assisted living facilities like Roselani Place are at a high risk of COVID-19 spreading and affecting our residents. If infected with SARS- CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, assisted living residents—often older adults with underlying chronic medical conditions—are at increased risk of serious illness. Until at least May 31, 2020 we will continue to have in place protective measures including temperature checks and respiratory symptoms of residents, staff, and visitors; wearing masks & gloves when providing assistance, enhanced cleaning of common area surfaces like door knobs, railings, elevators, dining areas, etc. and maintain- ing social distancing space of at least 6 feet when not providing personal care services.

All residents, staff, and visitors should help protect themselves by remembering to follow CDC guidelines and the Hawaii State Department of Health for social (physical) distancing, hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette.

One last point we as management have been asked to address over the past few weeks; outside trips by residents except for medically necessary purposes. Public Health Emergency Rules for the “stay at home and work from home” is in effect to fight this pandemic from spreading. And to limit recreational and leisure activities.

We respectfully ask that all residents not allow outside visitors until the stay at home orders are lifted for those on . These visitor restrictions are to protect you and others in the facility who might have conditions mak- ing them more vulnerable to COVID-19. Questionable visitation concerns should be cleared by the General Manager prior to the visit. In lieu of meeting face to face or going to family homes, we ask that in the interim you use phones or video conferencing. Our Activities Director can assist you with either of these if you need some support. And Roselani Place currently is restricting all volunteers and non-essential personnel.

Residents who must leave Roselani Place (e.g., residents receiving hemodialysis) should wear their cloth face covering whenever leaving the Community. If residents choose to leave the Community for essential needs, we recommend wearing face masks, gloves and sign out at the Front Desk. If you leave the island and return back to Roselani Place, you may be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days, or until testing can be performed by a medical professional. This is for your safety, as well as those around you. For more information and up to date recom- mendations, please visit the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov and Hawaii State Department of Health: https://hawaiicovid19.com/. Thank you again for your patience, understanding and our Community and Maui will get through this!
