UMPIRES CORNER

JUNIOR SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE By GRAEME HODGART This weekend sees the second half of the Junior Grand Finals being played. After last weekend’s matches, congratulations must go to the winning clubs, their players and their teams while commiserations go to those who were the runners-up. Hopefully there were many examples of great sportsmanship, fantastic skills, determination, commitment and a willingness to abide by the umpires’ decisions during the games. Just like some clubs, some teams and some players from last weekend and also this weekend, there will be many umpires who will be involved in their last game for the season when the junior finals finish. With the advent of the senior finals only about one third of the list of umpires will be required. Of course this means that there will be many not required again this season. There will definitely be disappointment felt by some in the umpiring fraternity. Often it is said that there is always next year and for many this is true. Even so, just like many of the players, there will be a large number of umpires who will know that during the 2017 season they have made tremendous personal development in terms of fitness, confidence, ability and experience. Hopefully the majority of the 2017 umpires will return for the new season that may seem a long way off, but will be upon us once more before we know it. May this week’s games be played hard and fair by all and be positive examples of our great game. A well-known quote says: “Win with humility, lose with grace, and do both with dignity.” Hopefully people will be able to cast their minds back on today’s games and agree that that is exactly what they witnessed. Good luck to all. QUIZ A Parkside player takes possession of a bouncing ball and is immediately and correctly tackled by a Braybrook opponent. The player is unable to dispose of the ball as the Braybrook player is actually holding it to his opponent’s body. What happens next? (a) The umpire calls for a ball up. (b) The Parkside player is penalised for . (c) The Braybrook player is penalised for holding the man. The correct answer is (a).
