The Council of Fifty and Its Members 1844 to 1945 the council of fifty and its members 1844 to 1945 D michael quinn since the mid 1950s several articles graduate theses and books have examined the existence and supposed role of the council of fifty in mormon history so that by now the council of fifty is within the general awareness of a large proportion of latter day saints as well as interested non cormonsmormons unfortunately these writers did not have access to documents presently available and in some cases they did not consult important sources then available because casual examination can make anything appear monstrous under the academic microscope scholarly studies of the council of fifty thus far have tended to distort insufficient evidence and sometimes to sensa- tiontionalizealize their interpretations 1 current research into the documents and historical environment of the council of fifty requires a rewriting of these scholarly and highly popular interpretations rather than a rewriting of mormon history in light of these previous interpretations of the council of fifty the primary role of the council of fifty was to symbolize the otherworldly world order that would be established during the millennial reign of christ on earth aside from its symbolic value the singular importance of the council of fifty is that it revealsjosephreveals latter day saints in the world and during the millennium the secondary role of the council of fifty involved its literal practical functions the council of fifty was only infrequently active throughout it history and LDS church leadership dominated and directed it when it was active the council was not a challenge to the existing system of law and government but functioned in roles familiar to american political science special interest lobby caucus local political machine and private organization governed by parliamentary procedures because LDS leaders did not regard the council of fifty as subversive of american institutions its existence was common knowledge among the latter day saints as long as it functioned and its deliberations were no more secret than were those of the quorum of the twelve apostles As a revolutionarynonnonrevolutionary political instrument the council of fifty held it final meeting in 1884 but the organization continued to survive technically until the last of its members died in 1945 establishment among several historical questions about the council of fifty is the matter of dating its establishment A different date for its organization is provided by each of four reputable original sources 7 april 1842 10 11 and 13 march 1844 primarily because each source considered a different event as marking the councils origin each of these dates has significance in the establishment of the coun- cil of fifty the minutes of the council for 10 april 1880 state that it was organized by the lord april ath7th 1842 they further indicate that this was the date of the revelation to joseph smith which provided the name and mission of the organization 2 dating the organization of the council of fifty in terms of the revelation and not whenjosephwhen joseph smith acted upon the revelation thus fulfills the prophecy of daniel that the kingdom of god was a rock cut out of the mountain without hands daniel 244 4543 LDS leaders often cited the daniel passage when they spoke of the organization of the latter day kingdom of god 3 at present no document has surfaced that explains why joseph smith waited two years to give but the 1842 date stands as the divine establishment when it comes to the temporal establishment wilford woodruff and franklin D richards state that joseph smith orga- nized the council of fifty on 10 march 1844 4 on that date joseph smith read two letters from lyman wight george miller and their associates who were on a mission in wisconsin to obtain lumber to build the nauvoonauvoc house and the nauvoo temple in illinois lyman wight complained that the US indian agent was using his legal powers to prevent the latter day saints from dealing with the indians who allowed the cormonsmormons to obtain lumber from indian lands elder wight asked the first presidency to let his group go with the indians to the republic oftexas where they would be free from US laws and could establish a gathering place 5 joseph smiths handwritten journal for 10 march 1844 indicates how a 430 PM meeting of a few associates at the nauvoo mansion to discuss these letters was the starting point for the committee one blank line no law can be enacted but what every man can be protected from the meeting adjourned and reconvened at 7 PM in the assembly room above joseph smiths store where he had To understand the significance of the 1844 document in relation to the LDS Church and Mormon claims of presidential succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., one must recognize the authenticity and provenance of the document itself, the statements and actions by Joseph Smith about succession before 1844, the succession de- velopments at Nauvoo after January 1844, and the nature of apostolic succes- sion begun by Brigham Young and continued in the LDS Church today. All internal evidences concerning the manuscript blessing of Joseph Smith III, dated 17 January 1844, give conclusive support to its authenticity. Anyone at all familiar with the thousands of official manuscript documents of early Mormonism will immediately recognize that the document is written on paper contemporary with the 1840s, that the text of the blessing is in the extraordinar- ily distinctive handwriting of Joseph Smith's personal clerk, Thomas Bullock, that the words on the back of the document ("Joseph Smith 3 blessing") bear striking similarity to the handwriting of Joseph Smith, Jr., and that the docu- ment was folded and labeled in precisely the manner all one-page documents were filed by the church historian's office in the 1844 period.

    Maurine C. Ward: The Sacrifice of a Mother 33 The Sacrifice of a Mother Maurine Carr Ward It has been said that a sacrifice without a price is meaningless. Today, I wish to speak of a mother’s sacrifice. It was in 1836 when the Richards family1 in Richmond, Massachusetts, heard about the restored Church of Christ. Newly converted Brigham Young had introduced the Church to his first cousins. Phinehas, Willard, and Levi Richards, along with their sisters Rhoda, Nancy, and Hepzibah, immediately embraced the new teachings. Their parents and brothers Joseph and William rejected their supposed radical ideas, as did Nancy’s husband and Phinehas’s wife, Wealthy Dewey Richards. Wealthy watched in horror and sorrow as her husband, Phinehas, and her children all became increasingly interested in Mormonism. In an attempt to investigate the Church more fully, Phinehas, Levi, Willard, Hepsy, and Wealthy’s fourteen-year-old son, George Spencer, departed for Kirtland. There, in 1837, Phinehas and George were baptized. That fall, Phinehas returned to the East, carrying the gospel message back to his extended and immediate families, leaving George with Levi and Hepsy. Although Phinehas was able to baptize his three older children and other fami- ly members, his dear wife was still not converted. When the Saints in Kirtland left for Far West, Missouri, young George accompanied Levi and Hepsy, who settled on Shoal Creek. They were part of the thirty or forty LDS families living in covered wagons and tents and a few MAURINE CARR WARD is the editor of the Nauvoo Journal. Brocchus, Territorial Secretary Broughton D. Harris, and Indian Subagent Henry R. Day created a furor in Congress with their reports of Brigham Young‘s rebellion against federal authority. This came as a great surprise in Washington since over the previous five years, Mormon agents had created an image of the Latter-day Saints as mainstream Americans who were loyal to the United States and had a conventional form of republican government. Perkins On 17 July1846, one day after Captain James Allen had mustered in the Mormon Battalion, U.S. Army of the West, Brigham Young called eighty- nine bishops1 to look after the wives and families of the Mormon Battalion.2 Among the group called were Ute Perkins (1816–1901), a thirty-year-old member of seven years, his uncles, William G. Perkins and John Vance, and his first cousin, Andrew H. Perkins. Until Nauvoo, the Church’s two general bishops, Bishop Newel K. Whitney in Kirtland and Bishop Edward Partridge in Missouri, bore as their major responsibility the challenge to care for the poor and needy. In Nauvoo, in addition to the general bishops, the Church initiated the prac- tice of assigning bishops to aid the poor within Nauvoo’s municipal wards— hence the beginnings of ward bishops. During the trek west, as the calling of these eighty-nine bishops shows, the commitment to calling local bishops to care for small membership groupings was underway and became enough of an established practice that in Utah it became standard Church administra- tive practice—a presiding bishopric at the general level and ward bishops at the local level. Therefore, study of the bishops’ work during the Winter Quarters period deserves historical attention, to which effort the following material contributes.3 Ute Perkins lived in a temporary Mormon encampment called Pleasant Valley, where his father Absalom was the branch president.

    Mormon Land Rights in Caldwell and Daviess Counties and the Mormon Conflict of 1838 by Jeffrey N. Walker New Findings and New Understandings In 2005, as manager of the Legal and Business Se- ries for the Joseph Smith Papers Project, Walker began exploring the 1830s legal and business dynamics of the Church in Missouri. He was forewarned that due to the devastations in the state during the Civil War, including the burning of most of the county courthouses, finding relevant legal documents would be challenging. With the assistance of researchers inside and outside the Church, Walker discovered a wealth of previously unknown legal documents kept by the federal, rather than the state, gov- ernment. His article discusses the relevance of these docu- ments to the 1838 persecutions of Mormons in Missouri. Persecution and the financial collapse in Kirtland in 1838 forced Joseph Smith to leave Ohio and head- quarter the Church in Missouri, where thousands of Latter-day Saints had already settled. Once in Missouri, he and the other leaders faced the challenge of finding an affordable place for these newcomers to settle, as they previously had contributed their money and lands to help satisfy debts arising principally from the con- struction of the Kirtland Temple. I say that I am a good hand to keep the dogs and wolves out of the flock. —Brigham Young (I860)1 MORMONISM, AMERICA'S UNIQUE RELIGIOUS MANIFESTATION, has a remark- able past. Nourished on the spectacular, the faith can count heroic mar- tyrs, epic treks, and seemingly supernatural manifestations. Deep in the Mormon psyche is an attraction to prophetic posturing and swagger. In particular, Joseph Smith, Jr., and Brigham Young are icons who have come to dominate the Mormon world like mythical colossuses. After Smith's untimely 1844 murder, Brigham Young and an ailing Sidney Rigdon, the only surviving member of the First Presidency, be- came entangled in an ecclesiastical dogfight for primacy. Young, a mas- terful strategist with a political adroitness and physical vitality lacking in Rigdon, easily won the mantle.2 However, as time passed, the rather prosaic events surrounding this tussle for church leadership metamor- phosed into a mythical marvel. Many researchers have started to consider evolving networks, i.e. Time-Varying Graphs (TVGs), to begin to understand how these networks change over time. In this dissertation, we expand on current practice in three directions: we define a new concept of \node-identity class" to describe different \lenses" over an evolving network, we develop sampling methods to produce representative static graphs over a network as it evolves, and we utilize social network metrics to produce distributions characterizing the dynamics of the network's evolution. By combining these different techniques, we uncover a change effect in metric value due to network activity across sampling methods and window sizes, and produce a differential measure D(G) that helps signal possibly significant network evolution. We evaluate these techniques on synthetically-generated datasets with prescribed dynamics to show their effectiveness at capturing and depicting those events.
