It is hard to believe that it is now over a year since COVID-19 hit the world and made its presence felt in New Zealand. I think it is true to say that there is not a business operating in the region that did not feel its impact in some way. Here at the Chamber, and as we expected, we did see some attrition of members, particularly those directly impacted by the closure of our borders. But we’ve gained new members too, with people recognising the role a thriving Chamber like this one can play in supporting business through difficult times with access to advice, training and advocacy. And, like many of you, the team here had to adapt and respond quickly to the situation at hand. As an example, all events moved online with the first webinar being delivered a week after lockdown began and they continued after it was over.

An obvious difference between this AGM and previous years, is that this one covers a time-frame of 15 months from 1 January 2020 to 31 March 2021. The reason for this is a one-off adjustment in our balance date to align with more usual accounting practice (refer page 10 of the financial accounts). We have also made a change to the way we account for membership subscriptions, to simplify our process, subscriptions are accounted for in the month they are received as opposed to spreading them across a twelve-month time frame. And they are now treated in the same way that we account for sponsorship. This has resulted in a positive impact on the bottom line for this reporting period as it does include subscriptions paid in advance under the previous process.

I am happy to report that our end of year result is looking strong due to several factors (including the subscriptions in advance as detailed above). Other reasons include, stringent cost-control, an extension to the RBP programme and securing new contracts to assist with the delivery of economic response to COVID-19.

The focus of work for economic response and recovery has been the development and delivery of Project Kōkiri, a collaboration between the Chamber of Commerce, NRDA, Nelson City and Tasman District Councils and Mana Whenua. Chamber CEO, Ali Boswijk, took on the lead role for delivery of the support local “We’ve Got this– Kei a Tātou” Campaign. The campaign reached over 1 million people and the videos were watched more than 360,000 times which equates to 1483 hours. Most importantly over 2,500 people submitted their own videos and photos depicting what they love about this region. I am proud to say that that the team involved in Project Kōkiri recently received national recognition winning the Economic Development Award at the Annual Economic Development New Zealand conference. In line with good business practice, and to insulate the Chamber against immediate impact of any future unexpected events, the Board has implemented a Reserves Policy. The aim of this policy is to ensure a minimum of six months operating expense is held in reserve at any one time, a prudent measure in these uncertain times.

In keeping with our core service offering to provide support to businesses, we launched the Port Nelson Export Hub which offered seven workshops and seminars to our exporters and intermediaries over the last financial year. As we all know, it has been a hard time for exporters and with supply chains and transport routes still challenged this is not likely to change for some time to come. However, the value of the Port Nelson Export Hub is in giving companies the opportunity to make connections and collaborate with other exporters as we work towards finding collective opportunities and solutions.

Other new initiatives making an impact include the Intepeople Leadership Forum, Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) and Art/Work (creative careers scheme). The latter is a two-year pilot funded by the Ministry of Social Development to provide business advice and mentoring to people in the creative sector. Nelson Tasman is one of only three pilots in the country with the others in and Hamilton. We are also working closely with the Businesses for Climate Action group who, with support from Nelson City Council, have a simple and impactful objective to encourage 1,000 businesses in the region to measure their carbon emissions.

Over the year, we have once again increased our focus on advocacy and will continue to ramp up activity in this area. Your priorities and areas for concern help determine where we put our energies in this regard, so please remember that the Chamber door is always open.

As we look to the year ahead, I’m excited to have the Nelson Pine Business Awards back on the calendar. Even after such a difficult time (ongoing I acknowledge, for many of you) we hope to see submissions from businesses that have overcome adversity to share their stories of success, survival, innovation or evolution. Anecdotally, we know there are some inspiring stories amongst you and we can’t wait to hear more about them.

It only remains for me to thank our family of sponsors. Our cornerstone partners , Bowater Hyundai, Cawthron Institute, Kernohan Engineering, NBS, Nelson Pine Industries and Pitt & Moore. Your consistent support enables us to be innovative and deliver benefits to the wider membership. Findex for on-going support of our BA5s - regular networking continues to be important and popular with our members. Port Nelson for support of the Export Hub, Intepeople for the Leadership Academy and Nelson Pine for the Business Awards.
