2 Densely Woven Skeins: When Literature Is a Practice of Human Rights Amy Kaminsky What threads connect human rights, as a discourse and as a practice, to literary writing, criticism, and theory in Latin America? Are those fibers part of the very cloth of human rights and literature as interwoven practices; or is it the deft critic-seamstress who unwinds her own thread from a spool she keeps in her basket of critical methods, guides it through the eye of her needle, and stitches the two disparate fabrics together along a more or less visible seam? We might argue (tautologically) that because the right to produce, circulate, and read literary texts is a subset of human rights, literature constitutes a piece of the very stuff of human rights. The right to literary expression is guaranteed in Article 13, section 1, of the Organization of American States’ “Convention on Human Rights”: Everyone has the right to freedom of thought and expression. This right includes freedom to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing, in print, in the form of art, or through any other medium of one’s choice.1 Because such legal guarantees are a sure sign of their own necessity, we can understand how literary writing itself may function as a challenge to the abrogation of human rights. Even though the term is comparatively recent, invented well into the twentieth century, the spirit of human rights is at the heart of some of the earliest practices of Latin American literature, including the anti-authoritarian fiction of the post- independence period and the indigenista and anti-slavery novels.2 It is hard to think of a time in Latin America when there was not someone writing about some version of what we call today human rights, and always in a way that is never quite adequate. -

His new book reconstructs how Nazis fled from Europe via Italy to South America after the end of World War II. The author also claims that his research proves that stories about a secret organization of former SS members are nothing more than a myth. According to this thesis, ODESSA, the Organisation Der Ehemaligen SS Angehörigen (Organi- zation of Former SS Members), did not exist. Before dealing with this finding in the context of the Middle East, an overview of the book is in order. Steinacher first discusses the southern escape route via Rome to Genoa and other Italian towns. He then explores the mechanism of obtaining a new identity through Red Cross papers, and details how Vatican circles provided assistance. The reader learns all about the “Rat Run” from Germany through Italy and finally to the safe haven of Argentina. Italy, Steinacher notes, was Europe’s backyard. But it was also, like Spain and Portugal, the Middle East’s front yard. Franz Schalling Einsatzgruppen policeman Like every historical event, the Holocaust evokes certain specific images. When mentioning the Holocaust, most people think of the concentration camps. They immediately envision emaciated victims in dirty striped uniforms staring incomprehensibly at their liberators or piles of corpses, too numerous to bury individually, bulldozed into mass graves. While those are accurate images, they are merely the product of the systematization of the genocide committed by the Third Reich. The reality of that genocide began not in the camps or in the gas chambers but with four small groups of murderers known as the Einsatzgruppen. Formed by Heinrich Himmler, Reichsfuhrer-SS, and Reinhard Heydrich, head of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), they operated in the territories captured by the German armies with the cooperation of German army units (Wehrmacht ) and local militias. By the spring of 1943, when the Germans began their retreat from Soviet territory, the Einsatzgruppen had murdered 1.25 million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian and Soviet nationals, including prisoners of war. The Einsatzgruppen massacres preceded the invention of the death camps and significantly influenced their development. The Einsatzgruppen story offers insight into a fundamental Holocaust question of what made it possible for men, some of them ordinary men, to kill so many people so ruthlessly. The members of the Einsatzgruppen had developed a special motivation to kill. -

The Holocaust illustrates how silence and indifference to the suffering of others, can unintentionally, serve to perpetuate the problem. It is an unparalleled event in history that brings to the forefront the horrors of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism, as well as the capacity for human evil. The Canadian education system should aim to be: democratic, non-repressive, humanistic and non-discriminating. It should promote tolerance and offer bridges for understanding of the other for reducing alienation and for accommodating differences. Democratic education is the backbone of a democratic society, one that fosters the underpinning values of respect, morality, and citizenship. Through understanding of the events, education surrounding the Holocaust has the ability to broaden students understanding of stereotyping and scapegoating, ensuring they become aware of some of the political, social, and economic antecedents of racism and provide a potent illustration of both the bystander effect, and the dangers posed by an unthinking conformity to social norms and group peer pressure. The study of the Holocaust coupled with Canada’s struggle with its own problems and challenges related to anti-Semitism, racism, and xenophobia will shed light on the issues facing our society. What was The Holocaust? History’s most extreme example of anti- Semitism, the Holocaust, was the systematic state sponsored, bureaucratic, persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933-1945. The term “Holocaust” is originally of Greek origin, meaning ‘sacrifice by fire’ (www.ushmm.org). -

Adopting a broad definition of “the testimonial world” to encompass fictional and documentary literature and film, the pages that follow focus on testimonial work in Latin America from 1969-1991. By exploring testimonial’s narrative qualities, historical relationship to ethnography and memoir, and attention to gender and ethnicity, this study considers the symbolic re-representation of violence in testimonial texts and the ethics (and the reader’s ethical position) they advocate, particularly in positioning the reader as responsible to an “other” who is a victim of violence. -

The Holocaust, 1933 – 1945 Educational Resources Kit Glossary of Terms, Places, and Personalities AKTION (Action) A German military or police operation involving mass assembly, deportation and killing; directed by the Nazis against Jews during the Holocaust. ALLIES The twenty-six nations led by the United States, Britain, and the former Soviet Union who joined in fighting Nazi Germany, Italy and Japan during World War II. ANIELEWICZ, MORDECAI Leader of the Jewish underground movement and of the uprising of (1919-1943) the Warsaw Ghetto in April 1943; killed on May 8, 1943. ANSCHLUSS (Annexation) The incorporation of Austria into Germany on March 13, 1938. ANTISEMITISM Prejudice and/or discrimination towards Jews, based on negative perceptions of their beliefs. ARYAN RACE "Aryan" was originally applied to people who spoke any Indo- European language. The Nazis, however, primarily applied the term to people with a Northern European racial background. Their aim was to avoid what they considered the "bastardization of the German race" and to preserve the purity of European blood. (See NUREMBERG LAWS.) AUSCHWITZ Auschwitz was the site of one of the largest extermination camps. In August 1942 the camp was expanded and eventually consisted of three sections: Auschwitz I - the main camp; Auschwitz II (Birkenau) - the extermination camp; Auschwitz III (Monowitz) - the I.G. Farben labor camp, also known as Buna. In addition, Auschwitz had 48 sub camps. It bacame the largest center for Jewish extermination. AXIS The Axis powers originally included Nazi Germany, Italy, and Japan who signed a pact in Berlin on September 27, 1940, to divide the world into their spheres of respective political interest. -
