SENATOR BOB DOLE

RNC ANNUAL GALA

FEBRUARY 3, 1994

THANK YOU, HALEY. I KNOW

I SPEAK FOR EVERYONE HERE

THIS EVENING IN SAYING WHAT

A TRUE HONOR IT WAS TO HEAR

BOTH LADY THATCHER AND

.PRESIDENT REAGAN.

1

Page 10 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

WHEN THE HISTORY OF OUR

TIME IS WRITTEN, I HAVE NO

DOUBT THAT IT WILL REFLECT

THE FACT THAT JUST AS THE

LEADERSHIP OF FRANKLIN

ROOSEVELT AND WINSTON

CHURCHILL ENSURED

FREEDOM'S SURVIVAL IN THE

1940'S, IT WAS THE LEADERSHIP

OF RONALD REAGAN AND

2

Page 11 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

MARGARET THATCHER THAT

ENSURED FREEDOM'S SURVIVAL

IN THE 1980'S.

I ALSO WANT TO THANK

HALEY AND JEANIE FOR

ORGANIZING THIS DINNER, AND

FOR THE OUTSTANDING

LEADERSHIP THEY ARE

PROVIDING TO THE REPUBLICAN

NATIONAL COMMITTEE.

3

Page 12 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

WE HAD A PHENOMENAL

YEAR LAST YEAR--6 FOR 6 IN

THE BIG ELECTIONS--AND 7 FOR

7 IF YOU COUNT MIKE

HUCKABEE'S ELECTION AS LT.

GOVERNOR OF ARKANSAS--AND

I THINK HALEY AND JEANIE

DESERVE A GREAT DEAL OF

CREDIT.

4

Page 13 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

SO, THANK YOU TO THEM,

AND THANKS TO ALL THOSE

WHO BOUGHT TICKETS THIS

EVENING FOR THEIR SUPPORT

OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

A SPECIAL THANKS TO THIS

EVENING'S CHAIRMAN, HEINZ

PRECHTER. HEINZ IS A TRUE

EXAMPLE OF WHAT AMERICA IS

ALL ABOUT. HE CAME TO THIS

5

Page 14 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

COUNTRY WITH JUST A FEW

DOLLARS IN HIS POCKET. BUT

HE ALSO CAME HERE WITH A

DREAM. ·AND THROUGH A

GREAT DEAL OF HARD WORK,

HIS DREAM BECAME A REALITY.

AND I TRULY BELIEVE THAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY----- IS THE PARTY OF THE AMERICAN

DREAM. AS PRESIDENT REAGAN

6

Page 15 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

HAS SAID MANY TIMES, WE ARE

THE PARTY THAT BELIEVES THE

THREE MOST IMPORTANT

WORDS OF THE CONSTITUTION

ARE 11 WE, THE PEOPLE. 11 HERE IN

AMERICA, 11 WE, THE PEOPLE, 11

TELL THE GOVERNMENT WHAT

TO DO, AND NOT THE OTHER

WAY AROUND.

7

Page 16 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

IT'S THAT SIMPLE IDEA THAT

PRESIDENT REAGAN AND LADY

THATCHER HELPED TO SPREAD

THROUGHOUT EASTERN EUROPE

AND THE WORLD.

REPUBLICANS HAVE SOME

OTHER GOOD IDEAS, TOO.

IDEAS LIKE TAXES SHOULD BE

LOW, SPENDING SHOULD BE

CUT, OUR ARMED FORCES MUST

8

Page 17 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

BE STRONG, VIOLENT

CRIMINALS SHOULD SERVE

THEIR ENTIRE SENTENCE, AND

THAT WE SHOULDN'T TURN

OVER OUR ENTIRE HEALTH

CARE SYSTEM TO THE FEDERAL

GOVERNMENT.

AND WITH YOUR CONTINUED

HELP, OUR CANDIDATES WILL

TAKE THAT MESSAGE

9

Page 18 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY IN

1994.

WE ARE VERY PRIVILEGED

THIS EVENING TO BE JOINED BY

A NUMBER OF SPECIAL GUESTS,

AS WELL AS SOME SPECIAL

FRIENDS OF PRESIDENT AND

MRS. REAGAN. IN FACT, THERE

ARE SO MANY VIP'S HERE THIS

EVENING, THAT THE SEATING

10

Page 19 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

CHART WAS ALMOST AS

COMPLICATED AS THE CHART

OF THE PRESIDENT'S HEALTH

CARE PLAN.

WITH YOUR INDULGENCE, I

WOULD FIRST LIKE TO ASK MY

COLLEAGUES FROM THE UNITED

STATES SENATE TO STAND AND

BE RECOGNIZED. l'M TOLD WE

HAVE 27 REPUBLICAN

11

Page 20 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

SENATORS HERE THIS EVENING.

(APPLAUSE)

LET ME SAY A FEW WORDS

ABOUT ONE OF THE SENATORS

HERE--KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON.

I WANT YOU ALL TO SAY A

LITTLE PRAYER FOR HER AND

FOR THE RAW DEAL SHE'S

GETTING IN THE STATE OF

TEXAS.

12

Page 21 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

THEY'RE PLAYING HARDBALL

POLITICS DOWN THERE, BUT

SHE'S GOING TO SURVIVE, AND

SHE'S GOING TO BE RE-

ELECTED. AND WHEN SHE

COMES BACK AND BRINGS

SEVEN MORE WITH HER, I'll BE

HERE NEXT YEAR AS THE

MAJORITY LEADER IN THE

SENATE.

13

Page 22 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

WE ALSO HAVE WITH US

OVER 100 REPUBLICAN

MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF

REPRESENTATIVES--WOULD YOU

PLEASE STAND.

(APPLAUSE)

LED BY MY GOOD FRIEND,

BOB MICHEL, THEY ARE MAKING

A DIFFERENCE FOR ALL

AMERICANS.

14

Page 23 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

LET ME ADD THAT WE HEAR

A LOT ABOUT THE WORD

11 CHANGE. II WELL, IT SEEMS TO

ME THE BEST WAY TO CHANGE

GOVERNMENT IS TO CHANGE

THE MAJORITY PARTY IN THE - -r HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

HOW MANY HERE REMEMBER

THE DAY JANUARY 5, 1955?

WELL, THAT WAS THE LAST DAY

15

Page 24 of 34 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

A REPUBLICAN SERVED AS

SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE. AND I

THINK 40 STRAIGHT YEARS OF A

DEMOCRAT MAJORITY IS LONG

ENOUGH.

I HAD A CHANCE THIS WEEK

TO MEET WITH OUR

OUTSTANDING REPUBLICAN

GOVERNORS. AND NO DOUBT a ... ----~~ • ABOUT IT, SOME OF THE

16

REPUBLICAN PARTY'S

BRIGHTEST LIGHTS ARE

SERVING AS GOVERNORS. l'M

TOLD THAT SEVEN GOVERNORS

JOIN US THIS EVENING, AND l'D

LIKE TO ASK THEM TO STAND TO

BE RECOGNIZED. (APPLAUSE)
