This exploration is situated in a study of anthropology as a social science, emerging as a discipline in the early part of the twentieth century. It treats Osa Johnson's travelogue/ethnography, I Married Adventure, and Martin and Osa Johnsons' ethnocinematic films Simba and Congorilla, in what Thomas Gicryn describes as "boundary work" across science, safari, and spectacle. The Johnsons' texts work here as what Susan Leigh Star terms "boundary objects," the history of which traces the rhetorical and cultural work involved in anthropology as science and ethnography as scientific method Mary Louise Pratt and James Clifford have shown us how to think about the rhetorical tropes of travel writing as apparatuses for global scientific expedition. And Donna Haraway has argued for understanding science as a "material semiotic" cultural event The notions of disciplinary tropes and the extended material- semiotic cultural events allow me to trace what Bruno Latour terms "quasi-objects" along networks, as they work to purify always, already- contaminated boundaries. In sum, I explore the overlapping discourses of science and travel, as these interweave in the uncontainable boundaries of pre-disciplinary anthropology, and thus enact other material boundaries and borders between the civilized and primitive, familiar and strange, American and African. V PREFACE Osa and Martin Johnson dressed in riding breeches, laced boots, and pith helmets. A dead man slung on a pole -"Long Pig," the caption said. Babies with pointed heads wound round and round with string; black, naked women with necks wound round and round with wire like the necks of light bulbs. Their breasts were horrifying. I read it straight through I was too shy to stop. And then I looked at the cover the yellow margins, the date. I -we- were falling, our eyes glued to the cover of the National Geographic, February, 1918. (Elizabeth Bishop, 1971, "In the Waiting Room") vi The dissertation examines the written and visual ethnographic work of Osa and Martin Johnson, popular early twentieth century explorers and adventurers. I situate this examination in a study of anthropology as a social science, emerging as a discipline in the early part of the twentieth century. I concentrate on Osa Johnson's text, 1Married Adventure, and on Martin and Osa Johnsons' films Simba and Congorilla, as objects whose history traces the conceptual, rhetorical, and cultural work of anthropology as science and ethnography as scientific method I focus, in particular, on the life of Osa Johnson, an early 20th century scientist, adventurer, and entertainer by reading her text, I Married Adventure, as it circulated across the domains of scientific exploration, safari expedition, and spectacular travel. The dissertation challenges those readings of the Johnsons' work that too easily dismiss this work as "nonscience." I argue here that such readings leave much of the Johnsons' scientific credibility and consequent social relevance unexplained. My central claim is that the Johnsons' work, far from being expelled from the realm of science, was actually pushed into it and was advanced in its context as at least a quasi-legitimate science. Moreover, I argue that this text resists any strict distinction between professional science and its popularization. Studies of science by sociologists, historians, philosophers, and rhetoricians have spent much time and energy attempting to identify principles of demarcation that would define the essence of what really makes science science: who is a scientist? what is scientific? where is science? However, it seems now that such attempts have failed because no such principles for demarcation seem available. That is, insofar as attempts have been devoted to discover an epistemological and ahistorical essence of science that could be demarcated by certain common properties, the attempts have been doomed because there is no epistemological or ahistorical essence to be found. And yet, even though there arc no vii essential principles that demarcate science from non-science, science retains a certain epistemic and ahistorical privilege. More recent work in the studies of science have posited that science emerges at this epistemic privilege in a nonepistemic way. The argument posits that the demarcation of science from nonsciencc is contingent and local, mapped by a variety of conceptual, rhetorical, and social practices of disciplinarity. Throughout this dissertation, I draw upon the concept of "boundary" as it has been brought to bear in contemporary theorizing in studies of science to make sense of a variety of cultural practices and productions in those spaces where difference becomes manifest Specifically, in the dissertation, I borrow Thomas F. Gieryn's concept of "boundary work," Susan Leigh Star's concept of "boundary object," and Bruno Latour's concept of "network" and "circulatory reference." In the dissertation, I draw on these helpful theoretical and analytical tools: 1) Thomas F. Gieryn has introduced the rhetorical strategies for "boundary work" that separates science from non-science in local and episodic contexts. 2) Susan Leigh Star has created the concept of "boundary object" to talk about objects which inhabit several intersecting worlds and thus serve as "obligatory passage points" across those spaces in which lines of demarcation separating science from non-science are simultaneously ordered and disordered, contested and accepted. 3) Bruno Latour offers a network system of "circulatory reference" through which "quasi-objects" move and are dependent upon both coordination among multiple network participants and on die maintenance ofthat coordination over

    Alan Moore’s Miracleman: Harbinger of the Modern Age of Comics Jeremy Larance Introduction On May 26, 2014, Marvel Comics ran a full-page advertisement in the New York Times for Alan Moore’s Miracleman, Book One: A Dream of Flying, calling the work “the series that redefined comics… in print for the first time in over 20 years.” Such an ad, particularly one of this size, is a rare move for the comic book industry in general but one especially rare for a graphic novel consisting primarily of just four comic books originally published over thirty years before- hand. Of course, it helps that the series’ author is a profitable lumi- nary such as Moore, but the advertisement inexplicably makes no reference to Moore at all. Instead, Marvel uses a blurb from Time to establish the reputation of its “new” re-release: “A must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” That line came from an article written by Graeme McMillan, but it is worth noting that McMillan’s full quote from the original article begins with a specific reference to Moore: “[Miracleman] represents, thanks to an erratic publishing schedule that both predated and fol- lowed Moore’s own Watchmen, Moore’s simultaneous first and last words on ‘realism’ in superhero comics—something that makes it a must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” Marvel’s excerpt, in other words, leaves out the very thing that McMillan claims is the most important aspect of Miracle- man’s critical reputation as a “missing link” in the study of Moore’s influence on the superhero genre and on the “medium as a whole.” To be fair to Marvel, for reasons that will be explained below, Moore refused to have his name associated with the Miracleman reprints, so the company was legally obligated to leave his name off of all advertisements.

    Articulating Culturally Sensitive Knowledge Online: A * Cherokee Case Study Robert Leopold Abstract: This article examines the online management of culturally sensitive knowledge through a discussion of a collaboration between the Museum of the Cherokee Indian and the Smithsonian Institution. It discusses the roles of the two institutions in a digital repatriation project involving an extensive body of 19th and 20th century manuscripts as well as the assumptions that informed their respective decisions regarding the online presentation of traditional cultural expressions. The case study explores some challenges involved in providing online access to culturally sensitive materials: first, by probing disparate senses of the term community, and then through a close examination of a particular class of heritage materials about which many Cherokee feel deeply ambivalent and for which notions of collective ownership are especially problematic. The Cherokee knowledge repatriation project offers a novel model for the circulation of digital heritage materials that may have wider applicability. The success of the project suggests that collaboration between tribal and non-tribal institutions may lead to more creative solutions for managing traditional cultural expressions than either alone can provide.     Chapter 3 Heroines in a Time of War: Nelvana of the Northern Lights and Wonder Woman as Symbols of the United States and Canada Scores of superheroes emerged in comic books just in time to defend the United States and Canada from the evil machinations of super-villains, Hitler, Mussolini, and other World War II era enemies. By 1941, War Nurse Pat Parker, Miss America, Pat Patriot, and Miss Victory were but a few of the patriotic female characters who had appeared in comics to fight villains and promote the war effort. These characters had all but disappeared by 1946, a testament to their limited wartime relevance. Though Nelvana of the Northern Lights (hereafter “Nelvana”) and Wonder Woman first appeared alongside the others in 1941, they have proven to be more enduring superheroes than their crime-fighting colleagues. In particular, Nelvana was one of five comic book characters depicted in the 1995 Canada Post Comic Book Stamp Collection, and Wonder Woman was one of ten DC Comics superheroes featured in the 2006 United States Postal Service (USPS) Commemorative Stamp Series. The uniquely enduring iconic statuses of Nelvana and Wonder Woman result from their adventures and character development in the context of World War II and the political, social, and cultural climates in their respective English-speaking areas of North America. Through a comparative analysis of Wonder Woman and Nelvana, two of their 1942 adventures, and their subsequent deployment through government-issued postage stamps, I will demonstrate how the two characters embody and reinforce what Michael Billig terms “banal nationalism” in their respective national contexts.

    Franz Boas’s Legacy of “Useful Knowledge”: The APS Archives and the Future of Americanist Anthropology1 REGNA DARNELL Distinguished University Professor of Anthropology University of Western Ontario t is a pleasure and privilege, though also somewhat intimidating, to address the assembled membership of the American Philosophical ISociety. Like the august founders under whose portraits we assemble, Members come to hear their peers share the results of their inquiries across the full range of the sciences and arenas of public affairs to which they have contributed “useful knowledge.” Prior to the profes- sionalization of science in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the boundaries between disciplines were far less significant than they are today. Those who were not experts in particular topics could rest assured that their peers were capable of assessing both the state of knowledge in each other’s fields and the implications for society. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington were all polymaths, covering what we now separate into several kinds of science, humanities, and social science in ways that crosscut one another and illustrate the permeability of disciplinary boundaries. The study of the American Indian is a piece of that multidisciplinary heri- tage that constituted the APS and continues to characterize its public persona. The Founding Members of the Society all had direct and seminal experience with the Indians and with the conflict between their traditional ways of life and the infringing world of settler colonialism. On the one hand, they felt justified in exploiting Native resources, as surveyors, treaty negotiators, and land speculators. On the other hand, the Indians represented the uniqueness of the Americas, of the New World that defined itself apart from the decadence of old Europe.

Supervisor: Brad Vice, Ph.D. The object of this undergraduate thesis is to map the development of sequential art, comics, in the form of respectable art form influencing contemporary other artistic areas. Modern comics were developed between the World Wars primarily in the United States of America and therefore became a typical part of American culture. The thesis is divided into three major parts. The first part called Sequential Art as a Medium discusses in brief the history of sequential art, which dates back to ancient world. The chapter continues with two sections analyzing the comic medium from the theoretical point of view. The second part inquires the origin of the comic book industry, its cultural environment, and consequently the birth of modern comic book.

    Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1980 Volume II: Art, Artifacts, and Material Culture Comic Books: Superheroes/heroines, Domestic Scenes, and Animal Images Curriculum Unit 80.02.03 by Patricia Flynn The idea of developing a unit on the American Comic Book grew from the interests and suggestions of middle school students in their art classes. There is a need on the middle school level for an Art History Curriculum that will appeal to young people, and at the same time introduce them to an enduring art form. The history of the American Comic Book seems appropriately qualified to satisfy that need. Art History involves the pursuit of an understanding of man in his time through the study of visual materials. It would seem reasonable to assume that the popular comic book must contain many sources that reflect the values and concerns of the culture that has supported its development and continued growth in America since its introduction in 1934 with the publication of Famous Funnies , a group of reprinted newspaper comic strips. From my informal discussions with middle school students, three distinctive styles of comic books emerged as possible themes; the superhero and the superheroine, domestic scenes, and animal images. These themes historically repeat themselves in endless variations. The superhero/heroine in the comic book can trace its ancestry back to Greek, Roman and Nordic mythology. Ancient mythologies may be considered as a way of explaining the forces of nature to man. Examples of myths may be found world-wide that describe how the universe began, how men, animals and all living things originated, along with the world’s inanimate natural forces.
