Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021 I thought you should know – January 17, 2020 We are experimenting with a new format for our bulletin! We hope the new format will help people pray by giving them the song lyrics, readings, and responses for the Mass. We’d love your feedback on the new bulletin format, and tell us if you have good ideas on how to help people pray at Mass! I’ll be on vacation to see family from Tuesday February 2 to Friday February 5, so we won’t have daily mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary on those days. God bless you all and keep praying for our parish! Here’s the final installment of our “Resolve” message series. This week we start another one ______The Lord of the Rings is my favorite novel. It’s by J.R.R. Tolkien; maybe you’ve seen the movie. The main charac- ters are hobbit, little people. Now The Lord of the Rings is epic fantasy, and it’s pretty standard in epic fantasy for characters to start small and end huge: by the end of the 14 books and 11,000 pages of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, every farm boy and girl you fell in love with in chapters one through three is saving the world with superpowers. Tolkien’s genius is that his main characters, the hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, become great while they stay small. Their victory is not in superpowers, but in the commitments they keep by humility and love. Tolkien understood imaginative fiction can renew our wonder at the world around us, at the way things real- ly are, and his hobbits point out the wonder of our creation. Human beings are small and limited in many ways, yet in those limits, we can be great heroes. Just like the hobbits’ choices changed the course of their world, so also our humble choices have lead us to greatness and heroism if they help us keep our commitments. Resolve is the human quality that makes us ready to keep a commitment. It’s different than willpower, because resolve applies to a specific commitment. It might take you years to grow in willpower, but you can choose things this week, today, to increase your resolve. So far in this message series on resolve, we’ve looked at two humble choices: the choice to get clear about what we’re doing and why it is worth it, and the choice to think true and cor- rect those falsehoods that bounce around in our heads, statements we accept about ourselves, but would never say about someone else, because they are just not true. Today, we’re going to talk about a third choice that can in- crease our resolve. Maybe this choice is the most humble of all. To increase your resolve, shape circumstances. Look, our circumstances—what’s going on in and the things around us as we live—those circumstances affect us in big ways. We are not iron-willed Marvel Heroes like Captain Marvel or the Hulk. We are human beings, capable of greatness, certainly, but a greatest built on humility. So: when you resolve to do something, if you want to be successful, shape your circumstances. If you resolve to change your diet, get that bad food out of the house! If you want to get out and get walking, find a friend or a podcast or a prayer pattern that makes walking more fun! These are basic insights, right? But they sure make a difference. The deeper insight that often escapes us is how much we can influence our circumstance, the full possibilities of changing the shape of our life in little ways or in big ones, to strengthen our resolve. So many things in your life don’t have to be the just way they are today. My mom and dad got a lot of mileage for their marriage when they realized TV was optional. An old fashioned way of expressing the same advice is “avoid the near occasion of sin”. That means, notice in advance—or if you are like me, from bitter experience!—what circumstances tend to lead you to defeat, and change the circumstances. Notice in advance—or if you are like me, by repeated attempts and successes and lots of failures!—what circumstances tend to lead you to victory, and set up your life so those circumstances show up more often. Let me give you an example. St. Paul wrote the Corinthians: “Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a tem- ple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and you are not your own?” Paul tells the Corinthi- ans to be chaste. He wants them to be disciples with wisdom and integrity. He wants them to follow the teaching of Jesus. He wants them to honor the beautiful, joyful, and holy gift of a man and woman renewing their marriage Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021 vows and welcoming a new life into the world by the mutual gift of their bodies. St. Paul knows that this is something very good. And, he knows that any use of these natural powers outside of the covenant of marriage is something very bad. But we don’t have to take Paul’s word for it. If we really pay at- tention, we can look around the world and see harm done by immorality, not just in huge social stuff human be- ings harmed by abortion or human trafficking or adultery. Look around and think, and you can see immorality’s more pervasive harm in quiet poison of people who found exploitation or impermanence or heartbreak when what they needed to find was a good friend. The good news is right there in St. Paul’s simple direction, “Avoid immorality,” and his homely encouragement, “The Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will raise us up by his power.” Ordinary people like you and me can be chaste. The power of the Lord’s resurrection is at work in us, so that we can be forgiven. Whatever our past, Jesus can make us new, make us at peace with God, make us good friends. Chastity really is possible for us. Now, to make that possibility real, yes, it’s important to get clear on why chastity matters, why it’s worth it. To make the possibility real, yes, it’s important to think true about how much God loves you right now as you are to- day, about how much God promises you, and about how much hope’s there for you, because in each good con- fession the Lord Jesus removes your defeats while your victories shine ever before him. But do you know what? To make the possibility of chastity real for you, it is important to shape circumstances. A big part of the battle for chastity is the battle to shape circumstances. I just mean that we notice in our own lives and in the lives of others what tends to lead purity of heart, intent, and action. We notice in our own lives and in the lives of others what tends to lead to defeat and immorality. Then we make the humble, courageous choices, sometimes simple, some- times challenging, to change our environment, to avoid the near occasions of sin, to set up for success, and to shape our circumstances. Brothers and sisters, please allow me to give you an invitation for the week ahead. Think about your life. Identify a circumstance that weakens your resolve. Then tell someone you respect what you are going to do to shape that circumstance for victory. -Fr. Aaron Nord

Saturday 3:45 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2021 In Matthew 4:19 we read the well-known quote, “Come follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” Jesus was calling Simon and Peter; he is also calling us to be disciples who lead others to Jesus. How do we do this? I feel often our actions speak louder than our words. I am reminded by the quotes, “Preach the gospel always: use words when necessary” and “You may be the only Bible a person reads” that as I profess to be a Christian, my words and actions must also be Christ like. I may be ablet to quote the Bible, go to Mass a few times a week and have a lovely collection of rosaries…if my words and ac- tions are not that of Christ’s love nor do I speak to others about Jesus, am I truly being a disciple? Am I helping people to know Jesus? Am I allowing the Holy spirit to work through me? Actions are definitely crucial. With that said, I cannot dismiss the value of sharing our personal experi- ence with the Lord. We do not want to fall short, by worshiping God without actually following Jesus. I pray that the Spirit will move me to share my personal experience; where I have seen him work in my life, where I have been blessed and the times I have been aware of His Presence. When we share our love of Jesus and the blessings we have received, we are faith-sharing which is dif- ferent than preaching. We are sharing the love, strength, forgiveness, guidance and other gifts we have received. There are times when God uses us to speak to others. May we offer our words and actions to the Lord, may we pray first; listen for guidance from the Spirit, then be aware of our actions and words. “Lord, I want to be a disciple, I want to help people to know you. Help me to please you. Amen.” Debbie Gartner Pastoral Associate
