According to the CDC (Centers For Dis- ease Control) 55,000 people die each year world wide from rabies. Thanks to rabies vaccine, the CDC has declared the United States canine rabies free. The ma- jority of cases of rabies reported to the CDC are caused by bat bites. Rabies literally means “madness” in Latin. A bite from a rabid animal causes encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and untreated, is almost always fatal in humans. Elimination of dog-to-dog rabies does not mean you can stop vaccinating your dog.
