We are bidding farewell to the year 2013 and are ready to welcome the New Year 2014. Indeed it is a joyous occasion to be the President of this august body of NABI and enjoy the support of its esteemed members but the joy vanishes when I realize the responsibility attached to it. I dream of having the power to wipe away tears from the eyes of each and every burn victim, take away their misery and rehabilitate them back in society. Is it a dream or will be a reality in the time to come. Recently, we celebrated festival of lights Deepawali and I was expecting sizeable reduction in casualties. But this year was no better than the previous years. In spite of mass awareness campaigns by print and electronic media, we had 289 burns patients due to fire crackers this time. I was further saddened when Deputy Inspector General of Police of Northeast, an expert in handling arms and explosives, could not handle fire crackers properly on Deepawali and had to be rushed to Delhi for treatment of burns. It is distressing that we still have to travel to 2000 kilometers to get proper burn treatment in the 21st Century. I consider myself as a tiny lamp braving the winds in the dark night trying to spread the light of knowledge of burn management. I am not alone in this crusade- your active and whole hearted support will dispel the darkness of apathy and ignorance of burn management. Let us learn the science of burn management and master the art of burn healing by attending NABICON 2014 in full strength. Please ignite the millions of lamp and spread the light of wisdom of burn care all over. I cherish your active support and my heartfelt gratitude is not enough for that. I salute your commitment for better burn care in our country. I welcome you all to the forth coming NABICON 2014 in New Delhi. With immense regards. Yours truly, Dr. R. P. Narayan SECRETARY'S MESSAGE Esteemed NABI members, Greetings from New Delhi. Notwithstanding the unrelenting efforts of professionals dedicated to burn care, the 'prevalence' of burn injuries continues to be unacceptably high. The eventual outcomes leave a lot to be desired and achieved. The dignitaries continue to articulate high sounding flowery, rosy words from the podiums, convey their innate desires of accomplishing feats and fathoming depths to better the pathetic state of burn care still prevailing in our country. Some seem to never tire of bragging about the strides made in this front! However, the ground reality has an utterly different tale to tell. How is this dream of uplifting the burn care and curbing the incidence going to be realized without the 'unconditional' support and grants from the Local, State and Central administration that are perhaps still not sensitized to this age old misery? Long term plans obviously would include establishment of new state of the art burn centers in each zone equipped with trained manpower and machine. Nonetheless, certain 'immediate' measures would go a long way in improving the present dismal state. A huge majority of burn victims are still being managed by our general surgery colleagues across the length and breadth of our country. It is this existing work force that needs to be targeted. They need to be sensitized, trained, updated in skills, knowledge and provided with requisite armamentarium. The entire staff needs to show exemplary dedication. Burns should be made an integral topic in the curriculum of MBBS, MS (Gen Surg) and MCh/DNB (Plast Surg) and a minimum of 8-10 lectures should be mandatory each year for each course. It should be compulsory to include questions on burn care in all theory and practical exams. Otherwise students would continue to ignore and close eyes to the subject of burn care. Unfortunate victims should not be 'thrown' to isolated, secluded corners of the wards. There is not even one lecture/paper, leave aside a dedicated session to burns management in any meeting, of any allied specialty, in any part of the country. Our own Plastic Surgery Teaching Programs, CME's, Tutorials etc. which are now being held so frequently all round the year hardly ever include burn care. I may only request, urge and plead to the organizing chairmen to compulsorily dedicate an entire session to 'burns' in such gatherings. After meeting 'n' number of young plastic surgeons and PG's, it is so very disheartening and demoralizing to pen that not even one young plastic surgeon is willing to take up the burn care. This field perhaps is not 'lucrative' for them. It is sardonic to learn that at a recently held 2 day didactic course on burns, a handful of delegates comprised of largely some friends which were also outnumbered by the faculty. I can only once again request the HOD's at all institutions to motivate & sensitize the budding plastic surgeons towards this aspect. We also need to win over our friends from General Surgery and persuade them to join NABI. The aim is to make an amalgam of "Burns Fraternity" with an attitude & aptitude to deal with & heal the agony of burn victims. NABI Newsletter, No. 18, Dec. 2013 (2) Although we have had a decent number of new applicants joining the academy in past few years, almost all have been on personal insistence of a select few NABI members. It is worth noting that hardly any general surgeon has applied for nearly 3 years now. Why can't each NABI member coax and cajole just 2 general surgery colleagues each year to join our academy and strive with us in the quest for betterment of burn care? NABI on its part has swiftly sustained the good work this year as well. Two hugely successful CME's were organized, all awarded Professorships and Fellowships have been duly completed, next issue of IJB is likely to be in your shelves soon, newly launched dynamic website www.thenabi.org is updated and is functioning well, all correspondences have been swiftly done, and the eagerly awaited next annual Conference is round the corner, scheduled from 7th-9th Feb 2014 at New Delhi. I make a closing appeal to all members to please fill the NABI Directory proforma published once again on the last page of this newsletter to enable me to realize one more goal I had envisioned for myself of publishing an updated directory during my tenure as Hony Secretary of NABI. I would once again quote Robert Frost: "And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep." Wishing you and your family a very happy, prosperous and peaceful 2014. LONG LIVE NABI.
