Tous les scénarios sont de Matt Fraction.Épisode 7 (illustrations de Pasqual Ferry) - Dans des temps mythologiques reculés, Bor vient de décéder. Cul lui succède sur le trône d'Asgard, prenant son frère Odin à ses cotés pour asseoir son autorité. Le premier défi : soumettre Sleipnir, le cheval à 8 pattes. Ce point de départ culminera dans la première guerre contre le Serpent (en passant par la perte de l'oeil d'Odin).Épisode 7.1 (dessins d'Adam Kubert, encrage de Mark Roslan) - Odin a décidé d'abdiquer et de s'exiler. À sa place sur Asgard s'installe une matriarchie composée de Gaea, Freya et Idunn. Les préparatifs pour le bûcher funéraire de Thor avancent inexorablement. Alors que le corps se consume, un nouveau dieu du tonnerre apparaît : Tanarus. L'histoire de Thor est achevée, celle de Tanarus s'y substitue : tout le monde a oublié l'existence de Thor... sauf Loki.Épisode 8 à 12 (illustrations de Pasqual Ferry pour 9 11, Pepe Larraz pour 9 à 11, Guiseppe Camuncoli et Klaus Janson pour 12) - La reconstruction d'Asgard s'achève, la matriarchie décide de modifier le mode gouvernance, un étranger à la peau noir est arrivé à Broxton, Tanarus est respecté (et peut être craint) de tous, Loki cherche pourquoi lui seul se souvient de Thor.En tant que grand architecte du crossover Marvel de 2011, Matt Fraction pouvait difficilement échapper aux répercussions dans les séries dont il a la charge, à savoir "Iron Man" et Thor. Fear Itself - Invincible Iron Man est magistral dans sa façon de fouler au pied toutes les valeurs morales et certitudes intellectuelles du personnage. Pour Thor, le défi était plus difficile dans la mesure où il est déjà un personnage principal du crossover. Plutôt que de risquer la répétition, Fraction décide donc de profiter du décalage de parution entre "Fear itself" et les épisodes de Thor pour gérer les conséquences du crossover. L'épisode 7 permet donc de découvrir les liens entre Cul et Odin, ainsi que les circonstances de leur premier affrontement. Fraction plonge à pieds joints dans la mythologie scandinave pour un récit amusant qui retient surtout l'attention pour la perte de l'oeil d'Odin. Pasqual Ferry continue de dessiner des personnages impressionnants et des décors pas toujours convaincants.L'épisode 7.1 sert à évacuer Odin, passage plausible et acceptable, et à installer logiquement un nouveau mode de gouvernement sur Asgard. Fraction ramène des personnages de manière naturelle et s'amuse un peu avec les changements qui en découlent, sans en abuser. Il joue sur le plan de la narration avec le concept de panthéon issu du polythéisme et sur le fait que la nature a horreur du vide. Évidemment le dieu de la malignité et de la triche ne peut se laisser abuser par un subterfuge aussi énorme. Ce passage vient légitimer après coup le retour de Loki à 2 niveaux. D'une part Matt Fraction avait bien l'intention dès le départ de lui donner une place à Asgard et un rôle défini, d'autre part la nécessité immanente d'un dieu du tonnerre justifie également la nécessité de l'existence continue d'un dieu de la malice.À partir de cette conception claire et logique du fonctionnement du panthéon nordique dans l'univers Marvel, Matt Fraction se lance dans le récit attendu du retour de Thor, du démasquage des imposteurs, le tout se terminant par une grosse baston pendant un épisode. Ce récit réserve plusieurs surprises et détours qui maintiennent l'attention du lecteur tout au long et qui fournissent un niveau de divertissement satisfaisant, mais pas plus. Alors que Fraction avait commencé son récit en mettant en perspective la mythologie, en soulignant ses aspects immuables, en faisant apparaître les possibilités de changement et d'évolution, il ne raconte que le retour du héros dont la place a été usurpée par traîtrise. Le deuxième niveau de lecture (l'exégèse de la mythologie nordique) est perdu en route.Les illustrations d'Adam Kubert pour l'épisode 7.1 sont claires et facilement lisibles. Mais Kubert adopte une mise en scène relativement sage qui n'est pas à la hauteur de l'événement, les préparatifs pour le bûcher étant finalement très prosaïques. Il n'y a que la double page consacrée à la crémation proprement dite qui apporte un sentiment mythologique, essentiellement grâce à la sobriété des dessins et à la mise en couleurs de Laura Martin. Il est étonnant de constater que Kubert n'arrive à se décider sur la forme exacte du costume d'Idunn (avec des variations d'une page à l'autre.Les illustrations de Pasqual Ferry conservent ce coté diaphane qui convient bien à l'irréalité des dieux et à la majesté de l'espace. Il semble moins pressé que pour The World Eaters. Peut être que cette amélioration est également imputable à l'apport de Pepe Larraz dont le style se raccorde parfaitement avec celui de Ferry. Le lecteur reconnaît donc facilement chaque personnage, tous dotés d'une tenue spécifique. Les dieux conservent leur majesté, et l'apparence des autres créatures des 9 mondes (à commencer par les trolls) est originale, éloignée des clichés habituels des récits à base d'elfes et de nains. Ferry a conçu une apparence très originale pour la nouvelle Asgard. Assez régulièrement les cases sont dépourvues de décors, mais la mise en couleurs est assurée par un orfèvre Frank d'Armata qui fait plus que pallier cette absence avec un travail incroyable. La mise en page et les esquisses de Camuncoli sont sans éclat et très descriptive pour le dernier épisode. Klaus Janson tartine son encrage sec et nerveux comme à son habitude pour un résultat peu plaisant à l'oeil qui raconte l'histoire, sans plus.Pour la deuxième fois consécutive, le lecteur a le sentiment qu'il manque peu de choses pour que Matt Fraction puisse transformer un bon récit de Thor en une épopée mythique démontant ses propres codes. Le premier épisode permet de rêver qu'il se joue des obligations du crossover tout en en tirant les bénéfices ; la suite de l'histoire se révèle intéressante et divertissante mais le deuxième niveau de lecture s'est en allé.
