PINEVILLE CLEAN-UP After the devastating effects of Hurricane Laura in September, nine students and three adults drove ten hours to Pineville, Louisiana to aid in relief efforts.

CA parent Steve Cofer stated, “With chainsaws, rakes, shovels and a group of hard working kids, we were able to help restore some normalcy to five locations in a two day period. I have NEVER seen a group of young people work without complaining or waiting for direction as this group did. When the doors opened on the van at Mr. Randy Stevens’ home, they just went to work - raking, picking up sticks and limbs, loading trees on to trucks and hauling to burn piles.

We had two full days of work. We left at about 8:30 am and completed our day at about 5:30 pm. Although the days were long, I never heard one complaint. We served five elderly families and also did some cleanup at the church building.”

We are very proud of our students and the chaperones that dedicated time and energy into helping rebuild the Pineville community. We know it was no easy task, but they truly made a difference in the lives of the people they assisted.

5 THE FIRST TWO CMA CLASS RING ALUMNI TO DONATE DISPLAY DONATED THEIR RINGS!

Mr. Kevin Creech (‘99) attended CA for his freshman year through his senior year of high school. He served as Student Body President and played on the baseball team. He was named Mr. CA his senior year. Mr. Creech went on to attend Columbia State Community College and the University of Tennessee Martin. “We hope to eventually showcase a ring from every graduating class to date and continue collecting rings from future classes.”

Mr. Ronnie Erwin of Columbia, Tenn. honored his late father, Erwin, by donating a custom built class ring display and his father’s 1939 Columbia Military Academy class ring to Columbia Academy for display in the CMA museum.

The class ring display, which features a designated spot for rings from 1930 to 2066, was hand-crafted in College Station, Texas by carpenter Eric Dotson of Smokin’ Chisel. Dotson drove the twelve hour trip to deliver and install the display himself.

During installation, Erwin shared many fond memories and sentimental artifacts of his father’s time at Columbia Military Academy until his graduation Mr. John Tomlinson III (‘68) attended CMA for his junior and senior years of high school. 6 RECORD BREAKING CAN DO FOOD DRIVE!

For 30 years, Columbia Academy students have sought donations for our Annual “Can DO” Food Drive. David Davidson and the Junior Civitan club started this effort with a few hundred cans of food that were collected each year at Thanksgiving. By the end of the 1990s, these efforts grew beyond the imagination of all involved as the food drive totals went from 5,000 cans to 15,000 cans to more than 70,000 cans each year. This incredible tradition of generosity and student work continued this year culminating in the greatest amount of donations ever given for the CA food drive with nearly $58,000 raised across both campuses with a purchasing power of 116,000 cans.

Both campuses set fundraising records to help the school bring in more food than any canned food drive in 20 years. These donations were spread throughout the middle Tennessee area helping a dozen local congregations (including the West 7th St., Spring Hill, Scribner’s Mill & Mt. Pleasant Churches of Christ, Pleasant Heights Baptist and Grace United Missionary Baptist, among others), and another eight community service organizations and schools. COVID-19 concerns led us to believe that fundraising would be more difficult while the need would be greater. Given those difficulties, the efforts of our students, from Pre-K all the way through 12th grade, were truly amazing and hundreds of families in this community were blessed by the more than 40,000 meals this food provided.

17 WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE Spring Hill Campus

BY: NATHAN HIXSON, PRINCIPAL

Proud and Thankful…

In the summer of 2020, there was a thought that this (COVID-19) couldn’t last into the next school year... right? Things would return to normal when school rolled around...right? While there was angst with the decision to have school IN-PERSON, we felt confident and ready to service our students the absolute best we could! Teachers were prepared, but learning more by the day for IF and WHEN a situation arose. Classrooms were getting ready with social distancing in mind and precautions were being implemented for school-wide safety. With all of our ducks in a row, August 5th arrived and to our delight, so did our students! Actually, more students than we’ve had in our Spring Hill history!

Students arrived with enthusiastic spirits to new faces in the classrooms - five new faculty members! New teachers were eager for the school year and an overall attitude of gratitude could be felt within the building. We were aware of other schools that chose the virtual option, but we felt thankful for the opportunity to be present each school day. This was not a fleeting feeling as the weeks and months passed; we knew being in school each day was something to be thankful for. It seemed that regularly we shared a nugget of appreciation with our students, teachers and families for their representative, had prospective families in the building weekly as ability to adjust and overcome day after day! our record enrollment peaked at 131 students! Families from near (Brentwood) and far (Left Coasters - CA & WA) were hustling to While there were some obstacles with illness from students, families become a part of the wonderful things happening at CA @ Spring and faculty, we handled it in stride and communicated clearly for Hill. For the first time in our Spring Hill history, we had more the well-being of everyone involved. All in all, we were minimally students from Williamson County than Maury County. Regardless, touched in Spring Hill and thankful for the favorable outcomes with if students were returning to us or brand new to us, kids bonded and our folks! relationships gelled.

While we missed the parents in the building for a majority of the When I think about the 2020/2021 school year, I’m amazed at year, it was business as usual with our academic programs. New how quickly it passed. It seems like we had an anxious start curriculum adoptions took place with English Language Arts with protocols / questions, and it ended with a great feeling of and Math which created growing pains, but once again the ‘can accomplishment! We opened up the building late in the year for do’ attitude seemed to be the overwhelming vibe as time passed. chapels, Circle of Friends devotionals and end of year events...and it Admittedly, most new things are tough at the outset, once again, felt GREAT! We had successfully accomplished a WHOLE school kudos to our students, teachers and families for making this journey year during a global pandemic. I don’t think I’ve ever been more with us. We’re confident in our academic decisions and feel our kids proud and thankful for a school year as this one. Our theme verse will benefit in the long run from these decisions NOW! for the year was Romans 12:12 and I feel we “rejoiced in hope, were patient in tribulation and constant in our prayers” throughout. Thanks As I alluded to previously, our enrollment exploded during the be to God for His care, protection and deliverance. 2020/2021 school year. Mrs. Amberly Kaylor, our admissions

18 FINE ARTS AT CA This year Columbia Academy Theatre made its way back home performing Cinderella on the main stage of Polk Hall. Cinderella (Haley Hixson) lost her father and now lives with her Stepmother (Anslee Hulen) and two Step-Sisters (Olivia Mastalerz, E.K. Robinson) who treat her horribly. Cinderella learns she has a fairy Godmother (Ann Sowell) who helps her learn “Impossible things are happening every day”, and “even foolish dreams can come true.” She meets and falls in love with Prince Charming (Will Sowell).

The cast of thirty students with six crew members worked for months putting this production together. Originally planning to open in February, COVID-19 delays pushed the show all the way to May. The students’ perseverance and dedication to putting on the show made for a wonderfully memorable experience that they will not soon forget!

20 YEARS AT CA MRS. EARLENE WOOD BIDS FAREWELL

40 After forty years of teaching English, Psychology, and American History, we bid farewell to one of our most beloved upper school teachers. Mrs. Earlene Wood is retiring after a forty-two year career in education. During her time at Columbia Academy, Mrs. Wood served as cheerleader sponsor, and was also named 2020 Upper School Teacher of the Year. She has easily put smiles on the faces of students daily with her quirky sense of humor and caring heart. Students will miss their Disney-loving teacher, and we want to sincerely thank her for serving our school for all of these years. Thank you, Mrs. Wood!

“I have been blessed to work with Earlene Wood for the last thirteen years. She is an incredible teacher, a great Christian role model, a phenomenal colleague, and she loves her students. She has been a positive influence on the lives of literally thousands of young people that have passed through her classroom here at Columbia Academy. She is on my Mount Rushmore of CA. She will be dearly missed.” -Principal Jon Bennett

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR JENNIFER (WHITE) MILLER (’94)

Jennifer is a member of the CA Class of 1994. She is renowned in her field for her outstanding work as an embryologist. In past years, she has worked around the country as doctors needed her expertise but now runs a clinic in Williamson County where she continues to help countless families. Spiritually, Jennifer has touched the lives of many teens from several congregations in several ways, where her husband has either been youth minister or associate minister. Jennifer and Andy are currently serving at the Southern Hills Church of Christ.

“Jennifer amazes me with all she accomplishes within the church, our community, and with her full-time career. She teaches our youth so much! She encourages all the youth to SERVE.” - Southern Hill Church of Christ Youth Group Parent

“Jennifer has touched the lives of MANY teens from several congregations in so many ways, where her husband has either been youth minister or associate minister… She truly gets to know the kids and LOVES them as her own. She goes to ballgames, plays, karate “Jennifer is such a precious soul. In high school, she was always exhibitions, recitals, etc., showing no favoritism and encouraging the kindest person, so sweet to everyone. She has continued that ALL the kids. She has suffered several health setbacks, including as a youth minister’s wife. I have seen her come to many ballgames cancer, and she lives with several chronic conditions but always says, and other activities supporting her youth group kids and taking “God has a plan.” Her faith is unmatched by anyone I know. Her pictures of them for keepsakes. I know the girls in her youth group character is impeccable; you won’t ever hear a harsh word about her love her and look up to her as a wonderful Christian example. She because there’s none to be said... She is the most selfless person I is a perfect choice for alumnus of the year!” - Columbia Academy know.” - Southern Hill Church of Christ Youth Group Parent Faculty Member

21 WE APPRECIATE YOU! 2021 FACULTY AND STAFF APPRECIATION

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Brady Henson

Brady Henson has transformed our cross-country and track teams with his incredible leadership. He hasn’t done it alone, but a great leader surrounds himself or herself with good people. He’s a passionate guy who loves what he’s doing and gives it his very best. He’s spent many hours mowing and marking a cross country course on campus. He runs with the kids and challenges them to be their best. He makes sure they have fun at practice. He has grown the team from 6 kids to about 30! He organizes the county meets and volunteers to help with the elementary meet that we host here at school. He’s also the dad of a state champion. We are very thankful to Henson for helping lead our track and cross-country teams.

VOLUNTEER FAMILY OF THE YEAR Gail and Lance Harris

Our volunteer family of the year is the model of what it means to be a volunteer family. Gail and Lance Harris are the epitome of service to our students, parents, and the school. They have big hearts and truly love being Bulldogs. Their son, Conor, is in 5th grade, but they have worked tremendously hard this year running our concession stands or doing whatever else is needed. You’ll see them grilling burgers for softball, baseball, or football. Gail is a regular substitute teacher in the preschool and lower school, and we greatly appreciate her help there. You’ll see them rooting hard for the Bulldogs at every game. They have both served as volunteer coaches for our elementary basketball and football leagues. They are always positive and striving to help our students and school be better.

STAFF MEMBER OF THE YEAR Kari Robinson

As an alumnus of the school, this is Kari’s 6th year working at Columbia Academy, and her first year to serve as an upper school secretary. Kari loves kids and loves our school. She is a positive and fun influence on everyone. She is a hard worker and is willing to do whatever needs to be done. Along with being an upper school secretary, she also serves an important role as our athletic department secretary, working closely with the Athletic Director and the TSSAA. She also coached volleyball for several years. In addition, she currently serves as the sponsor for our Mock Trial team. One of her talents is doing hair and makeup, and she often helps many with Homecoming and Banquet preparations. She is always ready with a smile and a willingness to help others.

2525 Columbia Academy Endowment Funds and Giving Report Thank you to the many generous donors who have helped grow the CA endowment. For more than 35 years, families and supporters of Christian education have invested in the future of Columbia Academy by establishing and contributing to endowments at CA. Endowments are established as an investment where the principal remains for perpetuity and only the growth and interest gained are used.

Most of Columbia Academy’s endowed funds were created to provide need-based financial assistance for students. That investment provides financial assistance to students or meets other important needs for teachers and students. During this challenging time, we will be able to bless the lives of more students with financial support to attend CA and learn about God’s word on a daily basis.
