RESUMO ABSTRACT Neste artigo, propomos a existência de um diálogo In this paper, we propose the existence of a dialogue entre três documentários dirigidos pelo cineasta between three documentaries directed by filmmaker Werner Herzog (O Homem Urso, 2005; Encontros no Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, 2005; Encounters at Fim do Mundo, 2007; Visita ao Inferno, 2016) com a the End of the World, 2007, Into the Inferno, 2016) noção de horror cósmico, desenvolvida pelo escritor with the notion of cosmic horror developed by the e teórico da literatura H.P. By dint of declaration the so-called Cinéma Verité is devoid of verité. It reaches a merely superficial truth, the truth of accountants. […] 5. There are deeper strata of truth in cinema, and there is such a thing as poetic, ecstatic truth. It is mysterious and elusive, and can be reached only through fabrication and imagination and stylization. […] 6. Filmmakers of Cinéma Verité resemble tourists who take pictures of ancient ruins of facts. 7. Tourism is sin, and travel on foot virtue. […] 11. We ought to be grateful that the Universe out there knows no smile. […] (Herzog, 1999). Rev Famecos (Online).

This is most obvious in games that remediate classic literature. From the text-based adventure Dracula (CRL 1986) and the dubious side-scrolling action of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Bandai 1988), to more recent examples such as Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome (MagicIndie 2012) and The Wanderer: Frankenstein's Creature (La Belle Games 2019), video game creators have consistently adopted and adapted Gothic characters, tropes, and narratives. In some cases the works of a specific author have been used as the foundation of a game space, as in The Dark Eye (Inscape 1995), a point-and-click game based on the writings of Edgar Allan Poe.

  • The Paleblood Hunt
The Paleblood Hunt A Bloodborne Analysis by “Redgrave” The Paleblood Hunt A Bloodborne Analysis Dedicated to all those with a story to tell 2 The Paleblood Hunt A Bloodborne Analysis I didn’t really like Dark Souls. Objectively speaking, it’s a great game. The gameplay is solid; the world is compelling; the characters are interesting. Maybe it’s because, Demon’s Souls fanatic that I was, I had hyped the game up in my mind to such impossibly high standards that there was no way it could compete with my expectations. But I always found that there was something missing in Dark Souls: the unknown. The story of Dark Souls is certainly mysterious; the game avoided conventional storytelling and instead gave the player the burden of uncovering the truth on their own. One could pull back the curtain of Anor Londo and discover the machinations of Gwyndolin and Frampt, or bring the Lordvessel to Kaathe and learn of another layer to the story. Even so, the story of Dark Souls was all too grounded for me. It was the kind of story that could be re-arranged and presented as fact, with all of the mysteries solved like a novel where, at the end of the book, the brilliant detective goes over the evidence to the rest of the characters and makes all the connections for them. Demon’s Souls had been different. In Demon’s Souls, the answers hadn’t been there. It’s no mystery that the concept of Souls Lorehunting didn’t really exist with Demon’s Souls other than a few notable exceptions like GuardianOwl.

D.Y.N. Freaks By Valeria Introduction A normal world on the surface, a dark world beneath and a completely insane world beyond. This world has a long history and you find yourself at the end of it all, though you and everyone else in this world may not yet know it. The world of D.Y.N Freaks is one beset by Evil Gods. It appears to be a normal Earth to most of the several billion humans living on it and yet in truth it is constantly under threat from an infinite variety of monsters, aliens, dark gods and cruel things from outside our reality. To combat these threats, many secret organisations have been formed by humans. Some fight with advanced technology, some with occult magicks and others with both or stranger things entirely. And yet there are also some humans who seek to join the various monstrous overlords that seek to control or destroy our world or who seek to take advantage of them. For both the good and evil sides in this eternal conflict, events involving the monsters other than mankind are known as Hell Hazards. Our story focuses on the events surrounding just one of these groups, a medical associated known as Asylum. Seemingly one of countless monster hunting groups, Asylum is finding itself embroiled in a conflict against the 13 Horrors. The Horrors are beings known as Mages, humans who have come into contact with and make a contract with a Fragment, a piece of an Evil God. One of the Mages works for Asylum, fighting against its kin but the rest range from madmen to those directly working for the creator of these Fragments, the dark god called Nyarlathotep.

  • Bloodborne : Joining Conflicting Genres
Bloodborne : Joining conflicting genres Vinícius De Los Rios Haddad Laurindo Number 21800981 Discipline : Crítica e Análise de Videojogos Teacher Rui Craveirinha Universidade Lusófona do Porto June 2019 Summary Bloodborne is a game known for its gothic aesthetic and cutthroat difficulty, being generally highly regarded, despite the fact it tries to join action RPG elements with horror, two genres that are almost opposite in both execution and intent. And yet, it somehow works. Throughout this paper, we will explore what the definition of a genre is, how does it apply to a videogame, and study how Bloodborne manages to meld normally contradicting ideas into a cohesive whole. Introduction Bloodborne is a Playstation 4 exclusive videogame developed by the Japanese company From Software and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, released worldwide on March 2015. It was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki; produced by Masaaki Yamagiwa and Teruyuki Toriyama; designed by Kazuhiro Hamatani; programmed by Jun Ito; and composed by Ryan Amon, Tsukasa Saitoh, Yuka Kitamura, Nobuyoshi Suzuki, Cris Velasco and Michael Wandmacher. Hidetaka Miyazaki Bloodborne sees an outsider wake up in the Victorian city of Yharnam, after undergoing a blood transfusion from the “magic healing” blood of the town. However, the area is now ravaged, and everyone has all but gone mad. Trapped in a living nightmare, the newly born hunter must now fend for themselves, as they try to discover the truth that’s hidden behind the madness, and maybe something deeper… It was received particularly well, not receiving a single review below 9 out of 10. And yet, it joins genres that, ordinarily, would never work together.

JUMP WISH-LIST Rules/Notes: ● This list is solely for settings that don’t have jumps made yet. ● No jumps you want to see redone, I’m not going to go down this path. If there is any such setting mentioned on list, then as soon as it is pointed out to me, I’ll remove it. ● Settings already claimed will be either removed from list or have claim noted. I’ll accept info about claims only from the jump-maker who claimed it. ● I hope to maintain this list in such way that /tg/, SB and QQ communities can all check it out. If you don’t like something on it, just ignore it. After all, if jump is being made doesn’t mean you have to use it. Furthermore, we all have different tastes, be mindful of that. ● Fanfics will be listed separately. Some people like the idea of such jumps, some don’t. I might end up removing this section altogether just because it is so difficult to decide if certain fanfic would be acceptable for being turned into jump or not. ● Settings will be listed alphabetically within a genre, by their official name. Any other names will be included after that one. Please include genre and medium with any suggestions (e.g. KultHorror - Tabletop RPG; The Culture - Science Fiction - Novel) ● Rule of thumb – recommend settings that you would want to visit in order to interact with characters and storylines, not in order to get specific perks/powers/items. • The 15Th International Gothic Association Conference A
The 15th International Gothic Association Conference Lewis University, Romeoville, Illinois July 30 - August 2, 2019 Speakers, Abstracts, and Biographies A NICOLE ACETO “Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut”: The Terror of Domestic Femininity in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House Abstract From the beginning of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, ordinary domestic spaces are inextricably tied with insanity. In describing the setting for her haunted house novel, she makes the audience aware that every part of the house conforms to the ideal of the conservative American home: walls are described as upright, and “doors [are] sensibly shut” (my emphasis). This opening paragraph ensures that the audience visualizes a house much like their own, despite the description of the house as “not sane.” The equation of the story with conventional American families is extended through Jackson’s main character of Eleanor, the obedient daughter, and main antagonist Hugh Crain, the tyrannical patriarch who guards the house and the movement of the heroine within its walls, much like traditional British gothic novels. Using Freud’s theory of the uncanny to explain Eleanor’s relationship with Hill House, as well as Anne Radcliffe’s conception of terror as a stimulating emotion, I will explore the ways in which Eleanor is both drawn to and repelled by Hill House, and, by extension, confinement within traditional domestic roles. This combination of emotions makes her the perfect victim of Hugh Crain’s prisonlike home, eventually entrapping her within its walls. I argue that Jackson is commenting on the restriction of women within domestic roles, and the insanity that ensues when women accept this restriction.
