January is Better for You Pie Month We spent the holidays gathered around the table indulging in all that is delicious during the holidays. It's time to get back into our normal routines and sometimes that means spending some extra time on our health and nutrition. For January we are featuring some pie recipes that are better for you. For an entry form into the 2017 APC National Pie Championships, Click here. Entry deadline is April 3, 2017. Final Days to Enter Emile Henry's As Easy As Pie Giveaway. Bakers can enter at http://bit.ly/AsEasyAsPieGiveaway by submitting the name of their favorite pie filling or cake mix and by liking the Duncan Hines, the American Pie Council and the Emile Henry facebook pages. The contest will run from November 23, 2016 to January 15, 2017. A winner will be randomly selected and announced on January 23, 2017, National Pie Day. Remember the deadline for entering the Emile Henry Contest is January 15, 2017! From Coast to Coast America Celebrates National Pie Day
American Pie Council Newsletter www.piecouncil.org Winter 2008 FROM COAST TO COAST AMERICA CELEBRATES NATIONAL PIE DAY The American Pie Council and its members encouraged all Americans to celebrate National Pie Day’s 25th anniversary on January 23rd by encouraging pie lovers to “pay it forward” by spreading goodwill through sharing pie with loved ones and strangers alike. From coast to coast, APC members, sponsors and other supporters participated in National Pie Day in a big way this year. In the Midwestern town of Columbus, Nebraska, Phyllis Bartholomew of Blue Ribbon Pie Co. delivered free, fresh-baked pies to first responder and military personnel, including local fire fighters, police officers and members of the armed forces. Cookbook author and frequent Food Network contributor John Michael Lerma shared his expert pie baking knowledge by conducting a class on National Pie Day at the Cooks of Crocus Hill in St. Paul, Minnesota. Taxi drivers across Chicago hung apple pie-scented air fresheners from the American Pie Council – they’ll “pay it forward” by giving their passengers the comforting aroma of apple pie as they travel along their journey. And in Frankenmuth, Michigan, the Michigan Apple Committee hosted a National Pie Day contest to determine Michigan’s Best Apple Pie. The winner, Fred Burns received $500 "Pie Team" with iVillage Live co-hosts on National Pie Day and a free trip to Florida to compete in the APC Crisco National Pie Championships in April. In sunny Florida, the Sand Sifters, a volunteer group dedicated to cleaning up the state’s southeastern coastal beaches, enticed volunteers throughout the month of January with free pie slices donated by Sara Lee and the APC. -

PIE THOUGHTS There are many kinds of pies. Some pies are sweet and made with fruit. Can you name five kinds of fruit pies? What is a sweet pie not made with fruit? Some pies are not sweet. Can you name a pie that is not sweet? What is your favorite kind of pie? Pies are something we can eat for dessert. What other kind of desserts are there? We also eat desserts and snacks that are healthy choices and not sugary. Can you name five healthy choice desserts and snacks? Interesting Facts About Pies A pie is a baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough that covers or completely holds a filling of different kinds of sweet or not so sweet, ingredients. The Pilgrims brought their pie recipes with them to America, adapting to the ingredients they found in the New World. Their first pies were based on berries and fruits pointed out to them by the Native North Americans. Over the years, pie has become “the most traditional American dessert”. -

National Pie Day History National Pie Day was established in 1975 by then grade school teacher Charlie Papazian in Boulder, Colorado, in a simple declaration to his kindergarten, first and second grade students that his birthday, January 23, would be National Pie Day. He filed the proper paperwork to have the holiday established nationwide and the rest is history. Papazian’s Halloween costume that year was a giant blueberry pie. National Pie Day celebration eventually spurred the creation of the American Pie Council, an industry trade group that brought to life Papazian’s dream of a pie bakeoff at the Great American Pie Festival, now the National Pie Championship. While Papazian went on to establish the now world- famous Great American Beer Festival, we have it on good authority that he does appreciate good organic wine & pie pairings as well! A Brief History of pie, courtesy of the American Pie Council: • Pie has been around since the ancient Egyptians. The first pies were made by early Romans who may have learned about it through the Greeks. These pies were sometimes made in “reeds” which were used for the sole purpose of holding the filling and not for eating with the filling. -
If You Lined up the Number of Pies Sold at U.S
Pie Fun Facts Approx. $700 million in pies (approx. 186 million units) are sold in grocery stores every year. This does not include restaurants, food service or price clubs, only grocery stores. If you lined up the number of pies sold at U.S. grocery stores in one year, they would circle the globe and then some. According to a 2008 survey by Crisco® and American Pie Council: • Nearly one out of five (19%) of Americans prefer apple pie, followed by pumpkin (13%), pecan (12%), banana cream (10%) and cherry (9%) • Pie just isn’t for after-dinner dessert. Thirty-five percent of Americans say they’ve had pies for breakfast. Pies as lunch (66%) and midnight snacks (59%) also have a popular following. • When asked what dessert Americans would prefer a friend or family member bring to their house for a holiday dinner, pie was the winner with 29%. Cake (17%) and cookies (15%) rounded out the top-three spots. Pumpkin pie was first introduced to the holiday table at the pilgrim’s second Thanksgiving in 1623. Pie was not always America’s favorite dessert – in the 19th Century, fruit pies were a common breakfast food eaten before the start of a long day. According to a 2008 “Pie Slice of Life” Survey, conducted by Schwan’s Consumer Brady Brands North America, Inc., Carol of The Brady Bunch was picked by 40% of survey respondents as the TV mom that would bake the best pie. The Cosby Show’s Claire Huxtable was second with 22%, Desperate Houswives’ Bree Van de Camp was third with 16 percent, Everybody Loves Raymond’s Debra Barone was fourth with 13% while The Simpsons’ Marge Simpson came in fifth with 8%.
