Israel's Law of Return and the Debate of Altering
ALTSCHUL.DOC 4/21/2003 4:42 PM ISRAEL’S LAW OF RETURN AND THE DEBATE OF ALTERING, REPEALING, OR MAINTAINING ITS PRESENT LANGUAGE MARK J. ALTSCHUL* This note examines the factors that lead to the implementation of the Law of Return in Israel. The Law of Return plays an important role by permitting members of the Jewish faith to receive Israeli citi- zenship. The author begins by providing a history of the development of Israel as a nation and exploring the origins of its Law of Return. Next, he traces the historical impact of the Law of Return on the country and on those immigrating to this nation, with a special em- phasis on those emigrating from Russia. Next, the author analyzes the recent movement toward amendment of the Law of Return. Reli- gious leaders propose that the Law of Return should be amended to recognize immigrants as Jews (under religious law) only if the immi- grants undergo an Orthodox conversion. The author notes that this proposal, however, could alienate Jewish Americans as well as Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union. On the other hand, some politicians and intellectuals recommend a more radical reform of the Law of Return. Arguing that the Law of Return demonstrates an “in- tolerance for its minority population,” they recommend that the Law of Return be drastically changed or abolished. The author proposes that the two sides reach a compromise that requires Israel to establish the Orthodox-Conservative-Reform Con- version Institute. This institute would encourage the continued immi- gration of Jews to Israel because it would permit entire families to immigrate to Israel and eventually enable the non-Jewish members of the family to convert to Judaism. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 I S F 7-S/f9 OF POLITICAL AND Abstract This thesis is an ethnographic study of the Ethiopian Jews, or Beta Israel, a few years after their migration from rural Ethiopian to urban Israel. For the Beta Israel, the most significant issue is not, as is commonly assumed, adaptation to modem society, which to a large extent they have successfully achieved. But rather, their primary concerns revolve around the notion o f “belonging” in their new homeland, and the loss of control they are experiencing over their lives and those o f their children. The thesis analyses the experience of immigration from the Beta Israel’s own perspective and focuses on: first, the factors which contribute to the Beta Israel’s sense of well-being in Israel, second, the problems and difficulties they experience, and finally, the strategies they are developing to overcome these difficulties. -

Thematic Seminar: “Reading Social Justice: The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards” $1,000 Participation Award The Cleveland Humanities Collaborative will host a themed seminar titled Reading Social Justice: The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards to be held from June 10–June 14, 2019 on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. The seminar is sponsored jointly by the Cleveland Humanities Collaborative, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, Writers House at CWRU, Cuyahoga Community College, and the Baker- Nord Center for the Humanities. About the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards When Edith Anisfield Wolf (1889–1963) was twelve years old, her father, the wealthy garment manufacturer John Anisfield, summoned her to his office in downtown Cleveland. Anisfield had emigrated from Vienna in 1876 at the age of 16 and earned his fortune by working his way up from the shop floor in textile plants to owning his own company. He invited his only child to help him decide how to channel the family wealth into philanthropy. The year was 1901—19 years before the nation as a whole would give women the right to vote. In 1935, Edith Anisfield Wolf established what she initially called the John Anisfield Book Award to honor nonfiction books that furthered the cause of “race relations” (as she later wrote in her will), deepened our understanding of racism, and enhanced our appreciation of the rich diversity of human cultures. At its founding, the prize took “race relations” to mean relations among black, white and Jewish Americans. Yet, the Award quickly broadened, recognizing books about immigrants and Native American histories. Winners have included Nobel Laureates Ralph Bunche, Toni Morrison, Derek Walcott, Nadine Gordimer, Gunnar Myrdal and Wole Soyinka, along with other major literary figures such as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston. -

Alex Assaly (ama67) & David Grundy (dmg37) Reclaiming the Legends Myth & the Black Arts Movement 17 January - 17 February, 2017 English Faculty Building, First Floor Lobby ————— Dropping his history books, a young man, lined against the horizon like an exclamation point with nothing to assert, stumbles into the dance. - “Death as History” by Jay Wright RECLAIMING THE LEGENDS: MYTH & THE BLACK ARTS MOVEMENT finds inspiration in the anti-historical world described by Wright. Its mysterious dance is the “cabinet of curiosities”: the defiance of categorical boundaries, the assembling of varied objects, the powerfully mythic rather than the historical, the rhythmic rather than the calculated. The exhibition also “plead[s]” like Wright’s dance. It asks visitors to abandon traditional epistemologies and participate in the microcosm it has created. This exhibition-world is a miscellany of anthropological & egyptological studies, revisionist histories, spiritualist & esoteric writings, books of poetry, and music record. It intimates some organizational principle, but finds time operating synchronically. Traditional chronology, here, is corrupted: Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Lorenzo Thomas, Bob Kaufman, Ishmael Reed, David Henderson, and Marvin X appear alongside Gerald Massey, George James, and Theodore P. Ford. Like Wright’s dance, its form is ritualized and its theme is mythical. ◦ ◦ RECLAIMING THE LEGENDS: MYTH & THE BLACK ARTS MOVEMENT follows the example of its subject: it rejects historical fixity for the elasticity of myth. Most profiles of the Black Arts Movement (BAM), on the other hand, highlight and organize themselves by an opposite force: the historical-political. BAM occurred over a ten year period (from 1965 to 1975/6); the context of the Movement was one of major socio-political disruption; BAM was the aesthetic wing of Black Power politics. -

A History of Diane Di Prima's Poets Press
A History of Diane di Prima’s Poets Press Jolie Braun From 1965 to 1969, Diane di Prima’s Poets Press published more than two dozen volumes by major poets of the 20th century—including Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, and Frank O’Hara—and helped launch the careers of young writers such as Audre Lorde, David Henderson, and A.B. Spellman. Examining the press’s output reveals an important intersection of the major underground literary movements of the mid-20th century, key countercultural concerns of the era, and a vibrant network of poets and artists. This essay draws on archival materials to construct a history of the press and the books it published. By 1965, Diane di Prima had been writing and promoting her work and that of other underground writers and artists for several years. In 1961, she and LeRoi Jones began The Floating Bear, a mimeographed literary newsletter for young, experimental poets that, according to Jones, “was meant to be ‘quick, fast and in a hurry’” and aimed to capture the “zigs and zags of the literary scene as well as some word of the general New York creative ambience” (Baraka 169). That same year, di Prima and a group of friends (James Waring, John Herbert McDowell, LeRoi Jones, Alan Marlowe, and Freddie Herko [Recollections 255]) founded the experimental theatre company New York Poets Theatre. She also had established herself as a poet, publishing in little magazines and producing collections such as This Kind of Bird Flies Backward (1958) and Dinners and Nightmares (1961). As these activities suggest, di Prima had a network that extended beyond one particular literary scene, and her involvement with a wide variety of projects brought her into contact with an exceptionally diverse group of writers.
