Professional Experience/Dates/Responsibilities:

Assistant Chairperson; 2018- Professor of Horticulture; 2015- Associate Professor of Horticulture; 2011-2015 Assistant Professor of Horticulture; 2008-2011 Department of Agriculture, Illinois State University, Normal, IL My position at ISU is 65% teaching, 25% research, and 10% service on a 9-month appointment. I teach courses in the Horticulture and Landscape Management sequence. My research program is focused on fertility and nutrient status on plant quality factors such as health attributes and pest resistance, as well as SoTL research on service-learning in university and college landscape curricula. My service responsibilities include on-campus and professional society committee membership, supervising the Ropp Greenhouse, advising the Horticulture Club and NALP-NCLC landscape judging team and outreach to local horticultural businesses and groups. As Assistant Chairperson, my appointment is 25% administrative, 25% research, 40% teaching, and 10% service.

Assistant Professor, Ornamental Horticulture & Crop Science, 2006-2008 School of Agriculture, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Platteville, WI My position at UWP was 100% teaching covering courses in Ornamental Horticulture & Crop Sciences including Landscape Design, Fruit & Vegetable Production, Landscape Management, Turfgrass Management, Woody Landscape Plants, Crop Science, The Plant-Soil Environment, Weed Science, Pest Identification & Management, and Soil & Crop Science and Ornamental Horticulture Seminar. My appointment also included student advising on curriculum, independent study projects and internship positions. I co-advised the Agronomy, Soil, and Water Conservation Club, the Horticulture Club, and the Crops Judging Team. I was also the exchange coordinator for the University of Life Sciences in Aas, Norway. In addition to these duties, I had a partial summer appointment advising the UWP grounds department, managing Pioneer Gardens and supervising our summer garden and greenhouse staff of student workers.

Horticultural Research & Consultation Specialist, 2004-2006 National Onion Labs, Collins, GA My position at NOL was very diverse. I was responsible for the plant nutrition and production consultation for our U.S. and international clientele. I developed, implemented, and supervised staff members on research projects that addressed the immediate needs of both our clients and the onion industry. I was the lone Ph.D. in the organization and I served as the company’s technical and scientific resource on all matters.

Postdoctoral Research Scientist, 2002-2004 Plant Biology Department, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH My postdoc focused on the research grant I helped to write on the phytonutritional enhancement of leafy vegetable crops. My appointment was for 2 years at 100% research and included conducting field and greenhouse experimentation, laboratory management and analysis, and manuscript and grant preparation. I also taught Horticultural Business Management at the UNH Thompson School of Applied Science for two consecutive years.

Instructor & Chairperson of Horticulture, 2001-2002 Horticulture Department, McHenry County College, Crystal Lake, IL My job at MCC was composed of 60% teaching and 40% administrative responsibilities in the horticulture department. I taught three courses per semester and was responsible for supervising our 9 adjunct horticulture instructors, as well as advising approximately 100 students pursuing either an associate of applied science degree or certificate in nursery, greenhouse, or floral specializations. A large portion of my administrative duties included program and course development, promotion and marketing, and cooperation with professional businesses and hobbyist organizations.

Assistant Extension Specialist, Vegetable Crops, 1999-2001 University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension, Durham, NH My job was composed of 70% extension, 15% research, and 15% teaching responsibilities addressing the needs of the citizens and vegetable producers in New Hampshire and New England. Duties included presenting and conducting grower educational meetings, reviewing marketing and budgeting information, cooperation with industry for research aimed to improve production techniques, on-farm visits and problem diagnosis, as well as teaching Crop Production Technologies in the Plant Biology Department on campus.

Landscaper and Nursery Professional, 1989-1993 Clavey's Nursery, Inc., Harvard, IL My job responsibilities included all aspects of landscape operations: plant material installation, equipment operation, lawn seeding and sod, patios, retaining walls, and design. As a nursery professional, my tasks included equipment operation and maintenance, lining out stock, tagging materials, propagation, and delivery. Dean and David's Tree Transplanting, Inc., Harvard, IL I was involved in all aspects of business operations including accounting, payroll, scheduling, management, and operation of our truck-mounted 65" and 80" Big John tree moving equipment.
