As demand increases, so must agricultural productivity, Part of the necessary growth may come from farming additional acreage. But most of the increase will depend on intensifying production with improved agricultural technologies. The question is, however, whether farmland and rangeland resources can sustain such inten- sive use. Land is a renewable resource, though one that is highly susceptible to degrada- tion by erosion, salinization, compaction, ground water depletion, and other proc- esses. When such processes are not adequately managed, land productivity can be mined like a nonrenewable resource. But this need not occur. For most agricul- tural land, various conservation options are available, Traditionally, however, farm- ers and ranchers have viewed many of the conservation technologies as uneconom- ical. Must conservation and production always be opposed, or can technology be used to help meet both goals? This report describes the major processes degrading land productivity, assesses whether productivity is sustainable using current agricultural technologies, reviews a range of new technologies with potentials to maintain productivity and profitability simultaneously, and presents a series of options for congressional consideration. -

Millions of people – especially those living in rural areas in de- veloping countries – collect these products daily, and many regard selling them as a means of earning a living. This Agrodok presents an overview of the major commercial wild plant products from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. It explains their significance in traditional health care, social and ritual values, and forest conservation. It is designed to serve as a useful source of basic information for local forest dependent communities, especially those who harvest, process and market these products. We also hope that this Agrodok will help arouse the awareness of the potential of NTFPs among development organisations, local NGOs, government officials at local and regional level, and extension workers assisting local communities. Case studies from Cameroon, Ethiopia, Central and South Africa, the Pacific, Colombia and Suriname have been used to help illustrate the various important aspects of commercial NTFP harvesting. -

A Buyer’s Guide To Montana Water Rights By Stan Bradshaw Trout Unlimited, Montana Water Project A Cautionary Tale his tale is based on real events. I’ve just changed the names, details of the water right, the specific facts of the dispute, T and the location to avoid undue embarrassment to anyone. In 2002, Michael Hartman looked at a ranch for sale on a major tributary in the upper Missouri river basin. It was 1100 acres with frontage on a trout stream, and it had an active sprinkler-irrigated hay operation on 160 acres. When Hartmann was negotiating the deal, the realtor produced a water rights document entitled “Statement of Existing Water Right Claim” (“Statement of Claim” for our purposes). It included a water right number, identified a flow rate of 10 cubic feet per second (cfs), and 320 irrigated acres, complete with a legal description of the acres irrigated. It seemed like a great deal—nice property right on a famous trout stream, and a whole lot of water rights to work with. What’s not to like? So he bought it. After moving on to the land, Hartman looked at the acres claimed for irrigation in the Statement of Claim, located the 160 acres that weren’t currently being irrigated, and embarked on plans to start irrigating them. When he walked the land, he didn’t notice any sign of ditches or headgates on the quarter section he wanted to irrigate, but he figured, “Hey, it’s listed on the water right, so I have the water for it.” He approached the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) about cost sharing a new center pivot on the land and putting a pump into the ditch serving the other 160 acres, and they seemed interested. -

Science Arena Publications Specialty Journal of Humanities and Cultural Science ISSN: 2520-3274 Available online at www.sciarena.com 2019, Vol, 4 (2): 43-49 Water and Irrigation System in Qajar Period Sayyed Sasan Mousavi Ghasemi1, Abbas Ghadimi Gheydari2* 1Master of the History of Islamic Iran, University of Tabriz, Tabriz, Iran. 2Associate Professor of History Group, Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, University of Tabriz, Tabriz, Iran. *Corresponding Author Abstract: Qajar dynasty, which came to power in Iran in early years of the 19th century (end of the 12th century AH) inherited a country that, over the previous century, its economic power had been severely degraded due to many domestic problems and chaos as well as foreign wars and aggressions. Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar, through about twenty years of persistent efforts, could restore political cohesion and integrity to the country. As economy of Iran is considered an agricultural economy, this means that in this system, land ownership and irrigation system are among the important affairs. It can be said that from the 1800s to the last years of Qajar period, agriculture has used the same traditional system of ownership and rural relations have remained unchanged. The only difference seen in this regard is formation of cities and presence of villagers living in the city. In Qajar period, especially in the nineteenth century, the country had not yet entered into capitalist relations, and its monetary economy had not grown much, and the prevailing economy, which mainly provided internal needs of the country, was traditional agriculture. It is very difficult to draw an approximate picture of Iran’s agriculture in the nineteenth century or to show general evolutions of the country that have led to its development, because on one hand, the government has left nothing but some minor investigations of conditions of villages and, in practice, there is nothing about statistics but tax papers.
