While writing my first Communique article, I am embarking on two highly anticipated events: 1) the 2017 ICHRIE Annual Conference hosted in Baltimore, MD, USA and 2) the seventh season premiere of the wildly popular HBO cable series “Game of Thrones” (GOT). Based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, the books follow several “houses” in fictional worlds whose members are at various places in life trying to accomplish different goals. In this past year, we have accomplished much to foster scholarship amongst our peers and share in best practice. The bulk of our efforts this year centered on organizing and conducting our annual conference thanks to our gracious host, Carl Winston, and his team at the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality at San Diego State University.

To encourage shared scholarship at the conference, two key roles were the Director of Research, Karen Xie, and Education, Yung Ying Zhong. Karen got us rolling quickly by using her organization skills to get us online with the EasyChair automated review system. I learned that asking for help was a good idea. Our Past President, Michelle Millar, was very helpful in getting our web-based registration organized.
