INTRODUCTION

This book is the culmination of fifty years of gathering data on the Hatch family. I leave it to the younger generations to find the proof that Hezekiah is indeed the progenitor of this family. It is believed that Hezekiah Hatch and a Miss Phinney were the parents of Maltiah and his siblings. Confusion concerning the parents of Maltiah Hatch stems from the fact that there is little, if any, information to be found on either a Hezekiah, or a Begordis Hatch, to connect him with Maltiah. Maltiah Hatch and his wife, Martha Potter, are the founders of the rest of this book. Many birth and death dates came from reading the tombstones in the cemeteries named in the entries. Other information came from records in the courthouses of the various counties named in the entries. Where a specific family member contributed information, their name is given in brackets at the end of the entry they contributed. Also, any specific references are given in brackets at the end of the entry for which they are the source. I would like to thank all those family members who so kindly filled out the family sheets I sent them. I would especially like to thank the former historians of the Hatch Family Reunion who kept such faithful records, since 1902, of the early births, deaths, and marriages. If you find any errors in your family please make allowances for your elders’ memories, correct your copy and send me the information so I may correct my notes. Occasionally there were discrepancies in my sources. When a date, or a place, is in doubt, it is underlined. Each family is given a letter and a number. The letter signifies the generation that person is in with "A" being the earliest generation. The number signifies that person's place within his parent's family. Thus, Hezekiah Hatch and Robert Potter are both "A's," Hezekiah is "A-1" as the supposed father of Maltiah, and Robert Potter is "A-2" as the father of Martha Potter Hatch. Hezekiah's and Robert's children are "B's." Maltiah and Martha's children are "C's," their children are "D's," etc. The letters and numbers are underlined for emphasis. The index contains the given name of every Hatch mentioned in this book and the surnames of all the families they are allied with.

ORIGIN OF THE "HATCH" NAME

From the Hatch Genealogical Society in Salt Lake City, UT, we learn the name “Hatch” comes from the word Hacche, meaning a door or floodgate, which consists of great stakes or piles, put out by fishermen for the better convenience of securing fish. A weir, by old country folk, is always called a hatch. Hacche is also a term for a bar across a woodland path to prevent deer escaping. If Henry lived near a Hacche, he would be called Henry atte hacche and finally Henry Hatch. The name first appears in Doomsday Book in the form of “Hache” which also means a small ax among French speaking people. Also spelled Hach. Henry might also be known as: Henry Hatch, Hatcher, de LaHache, Hatchman, Hatchett. In Ireland we find the Hatch family of Ardee Castle, County Lough, Eire who have the same coat of arms as the Cornwall and Devon families - indicating family connection. In Devon, England, the Hatch name appears in Satterleigh Park, Barnstable, Springfield, Wooly, and South Moulton. Hatch Family in England tells us that the Hatch's were an ancient and gentle tribe that took its name from the place of habitation. “One Thomas, son of William, left his paternal and took to him the local name of his habitation.”

ANDREW DEFOREST HATCH

E-4 Andrew Deforest HATCH, b. 29 Jul 1876, d.13 May 1965, coronary, bur. Hatch Hill Cem.; m.14 Sep 1898, Canton, PA, by Rev. Elmer E. Smith, Bertha Ann TICE, b.24 Apr 1847, d.17 Jun 1940, diabetic coronary, bur. Hatch Hill Cem., (5 ch.). Bertha was a "hired girl" in a boarding house in Canton, PA, where Andrew boarded while learning the harness making trade at Gleckner's harness factory in Canton. After they were married, they lived with Andrew's Uncle Iasiah Zaner near Laddsburg and worked the farm until Iasiah died in the fall of 1899. They moved to Towanda where he worked in a furniture factory for awhile. The two babies that died were born in N. & S. Towanda. He worked at harness making in Shiner's Harness Shop on Bridge St. They lived on the "Slaughter House Farm" on Plank Rd., northwest of Towanda, when Lawrence was born. Andrew opened his own shop on Bridge St., about 1905 or 1906, and the family lived behind the store for awhile. Then they moved into an apartment across the street where Mildred was born in 1906. In 1907 he was caught in the "money panic" and went bankrupt. They moved to Wyalusing where he opened a shop in his wife's name, which also failed. Next, they moved to Vaughn Hill, four miles north of Wyalusing, and share cropped the Frazier Farm for one year. Then they moved down the hill to the Fish Farm and tenant farmed that for one year. While they were there he had acute (ruptured) appendicitis and was operated on at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. In the fall of 1911, they moved to Johnson City and he went to work in Endicott Johnson Shoe factories, became a machinist, changed to United Shoe Machine Co., then to Dunn and McCarthy shoe factory. In 1920, he moved to a farm outside Binghamton, but soon returned to his mechanics trade, at Dunn McCarthy.

- 35 -

He bought a lot in Hila's name and built a house in a new development called Park View. He sold this and moved into town. Later bought a small farm in Conklin Forks which he sold after Bertha died. He retired at the age of 65 and lived with his daughter, Mildred SHELL at Black Lake near Hammond, NY. F-1 Hila Eudora HATCH, b. 8 Jul 1899, Laddsburg, PA; m.14 Sep 1922, St. James Church, Johnson City, NY, William Peter KINNEY, b. 3 Oct 1899, Binghamton, NY, d. 2 Jul 1971, Johnson City, NY, bur. Calvary Cem., Johnson City, NY, (4 ch.). William Kinney was first an amateur and then a professional boxer in his younger days. He was active in the Boy Scouts and K of C all his life. He was a shoe worker for E.J. Corp. Retired 1 Dec 1961. He was operated on for ulcers in 1957 and had a coronary anterior on 1 Nov 1962. Hila quit school when she was fourteen because it was too much for her to look after her siblings, cook, clean, and go to school after her mother went to work in the EJ shoe factory. She went to work for a Miss Purner, a Milner. The first year she received a new hat for each season. The second year she earned $3.00 a week. The hats were all handmade from scratch. At the age of sixteen she began working in the same room in the Endicott Johnson Shoe Factory as her mother, father, grandmother, and a cousin. Hila began nurses training, at what, was then Johnson City General Hospital, in 1918. She had hoped to finish training in time to join a Red Cross ambulance crew at the front in Europe. The fighting ended shortly after she began her training. She had always wanted to be around people who were sick, and loved to take care of babies so she completed her training. Since she married as soon as she finished training she could not be employed by the hospitals. In those days they did not employ married nurses. Instead she worked in the homes of new mothers, and did private duty work in the hospitals. She volunteered her time, at the age of 85, in the Willow Point Nursing Home, in Vestal, NY. She also made cloth dolls and brought sunshine into the lives of all who knew her. G-1 Dorothy KINNEY, b. Thur. 20 Jun 1923, 12:19 am, Johnson City, NY; m.14 Sep 1946, St. James Church, by Rev. Geo.
