Never StillStay Geoffrey Wellum: The Battle of Britain’s Youngest Warrior BY RACHEL MORRIS As Hitler’s tanks roll into Poland on September 1, 1939, Europe’s worst fears are confi rmed: war becomes inevitable. A thousand miles away, a young man celebrates his fi rst solo fl ight in a de Havilland Tiger Moth, heading to a quiet English country pub with friends to enjoy a pint of beer. As his training continues, the mighty German Blitzkrieg sweeps across the continent. Soon he will earn his coveted Royal Air Force pilot wings in time to join the most epic aerial battle of history: defending the green fi elds of his homeland from the Luftwaff e foe determined to clear the path for invasion. Interviewed in London’s RAF Club in 2012, Geoff rey Wellum recounted his experiences as the youngest pilot to fl y and fi ght during the Battle of Britain. 22 fl ightjournal.com 2 Never Stay Still.indd 22 7/16/13 2:52 PM Spitfi re Mk I P9374 comes in to land at Duxford, England on a fall evening. THE ROYAL AIR FORCE COLLEGE JOURNAL CRANWELL AUGUST 2016 VOL LXXXV ROYAL AIR FORCE COLLEGE CRANWELL JOURNAL VOLUME LXXXV Editorial Board Editor-in-Chief Air Commodore C J Luck Editor Mrs A Sturtridge Page 1 FOREWORD By Air Commodore C J Luck Welcome to first edition of the revitalised Journal of the RAF College. After a hiatus of several years it has been re-born as a largely electronic publication with a limited run of hard copies. There is much that you might recognise from earlier editions and the editorial team have aimed to reflect the wide range of activity at Cranwell over the last year. It has been a very busy year for the RAF College. There have been significant changes coming out of SDSR15 which have led to an increase in the number of Phase 1 courses going through the College and an increase in the number of Officer Cadets on each course. This will feed an uplift in the number of Phase 2 trainees at Cranwell and elsewhere. In order to manage this increase in the training task the IOT course has been shortened from 30 weeks to 24 weeks. Considerable efforts have been made to ensure that the new course is more efficient and to protect key learning objectives. The College has continued to support a very busy calendar of events in the last year. With over 900 applications for events at Cranwell we have focussed on those which meet our training and engagement objectives while supporting the wider RAF. This year they mark their 75th Anniversary with a parade and Cranwell celebrated 100 years as a military flying “extravaganza” in front of College Hall.

RAF COLLEGE CRANWELL “Battle of Britain” A Tribute to the Cranwellian Few Version 7.7 dated 15 September 2020 created by IBM Steward 6GE In its electronic form, this document contains underlined, hypertext links to additional material, including alternative source data and archived video/audio clips. [To open these links in a separate browser tab and thus not lose your place in this e-document, press control+click (Windows) or command+click (Apple Mac) on the underlined word or image] Battle of Britain - the Cranwellian Contribution By the outbreak of war, the RAF College had been operating for nearly two decades. It had fully trained 36 Entries of Flight Cadets - two Entries beginning each year, and each lasting two years - with some 956 successful cadets still serving as officers in the RAF. 134 cadets from a further six pre-war entries had their training abruptly terminated, when the College suspended officer training as soon as war was declared. Some, like AH Humphrey (later MRAF Sir Andrew Humphrey) who had not completed officer training, were enlisted as airmen u/t pilots to undergo flying training at the Service Flying Training School (SFTS) set up at RAF Cranwell. Others transferred to the RAFVR. Research suggests that 145 Cranwellians (90 flight cadets, 54 SFTS trained pilots and a transferee to the RAFVR) took part in the Battle of Britain, 38 pilots sacrificing their lives in combat and forming our ‘Roll of Honour’ presented on the last page of this tribute. Each pilot carried out at least one authorised operational sortie with an eligible unit of the RAF in the Battle, between 0001hrs on 10th July and 2359 hrs on 31st October 1940, and thus qualified for the award of the Battle of Britain Clasp to the 1939-45 Star.

Patron: The Viscount Trenchard of Wolfeton September 2011 Editorial Welcome to the late summer, early autumn edition. So summer is fast slipping away and the dark mornings & nights are already back with us. The garden is starting to look tired, with some old favourites finished for another year although the tomatoes & Apples are plentiful (that’s of course if like me you have an Apple tree!). It won’t be long now before were scraping the cars again! As usual I would like to thank all of you who have sent me messages of support for the newsletter – thank you, it is much appreciated although undoubtedly thanks to all you who have contributed – that said, please do keep your memories and stories coming folks as this is what helps me produce such bumper editions. I know I have probably used too many articles in one go, and the puritans amongst us will advise to hold some back, and I have, so if you have sent me material and you don’t see it in here, it will be in the next edition. I have a promise of many more articles to come from various sources although inevitably, the newsletter will start to get smaller in time, so keep it coming folks. Some of you have sent me some photographs. These really are wonderful as they help boost the archive, so many many thanks.
