WWI FEATURED EXHIBIT by Mr. Charles. B. Oellig

The museum’s “Lifeguard Periscope” from WWI (left and right) photographed by SGT Damian J. M. Smith, Command Historian. Lifeguard Collapsible Periscope advertisement from WWI, taken from www.pinterest.com.

This “Lifeguard Periscope” was made by F. Duerr & Sons in Manchester, England, for troops in World War I. During the Great War, this simple device saved many allied army lives on the battlefield in Europe. By using this simple periscope, soldiers could view the battlefield prior to any movement or attack while being in the safety of their own trench, unexposed to enemy snipers. To see this and other fascinating exhibits, please come visit the Museum! PAGE 2 PENNSYLVANIA NATIONAL GUARD MILITARY MUSEUM 29-2018
