Based on documents not previously widely available, as well as recently declassified papers and letters, this article concludes that iodine-131 found in the thyroids of some Australian sheep would be consistent with them having grazed in the path of a potential radioactive fallout plume from a 22 September low-yield nuclear test in the Southern Indian Ocean. -

Introduction Although the recent experiments and associated theoretical studies of fusion energy development have proven the feasibility of fusion power, it's commonly realized that it needs hard work before pure fusion energy could commercially and economically utilized. On the other hand, the fission nuclear industry has been falling on hard times recently since so far there has been no conclusion about how to deal with the long-lived wastes produced from the nuclear spent fuel and about how to solve the shortage of natural uranium ore in addition to nuclear safety and proliferation. It's a natural way to develop fusion-fission hybrid reactors including fuel producing reactors and waste transmuting reactors as an alternate strategy to speed up the time for producing energy since a hybrid reactor as a subcritical system can operate with lower fusion energy gain ratios Q, therefore the design of the fusion core for a hybrid system is easier than for a pure fusion reactor. The fusion-fission hybrid concept dates back to the earliest days of the fusion project when it was recognized that using fusion neutrons to breed nuclear fuel would vastly increase the energy from fusion plant. It appears to receive almost no attention since the mid 80's in the world, except in China who has given very serious consideration and has strong hybrid reactor activities since 1986 in the framework of the National Hi’Tech Program supported by the State Science and Technology Commission (SSTC) of China. -

WHY NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT IS A UTOPIA Introduction Centuries ago, ancient literature told the legend of the ring of Gyges, a ring capable of making its owner invisible to act with no consequences and be able to seduce both just and unjust men to commit injustice.1 It was so powerful that it transformed a mere shepherd into a mighty king. In the same way, governments around the world have been seduced to develop their own nuclear-weapon ring of Gyges to obtain maximum power and guarantee survival. Because the international community has tried to prevent wars to no avail, it is imperative for states to develop mechanisms to protect themselves. In that regard, nuclear weapons are the best guarantee of survival. During World War II, the international community saw how the United States used nuclear weapons to defeat Japan. -
PGNAA Neutron Source Moderation Setup Optimization
Submitted to ‘Chinese Physics C PGNAA neutron source moderation setup optimization Zhang Jinzhao1(张金钊)Tuo Xianguo1(庹先国) (1.Chengdu University of Technology Applied Nuclear Techniques in Geoscience Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province,Chengdu 610059,China) Abstract: Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to design a prompt γ-ray neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) thermal neutron output setup using MCNP5 computer code. In these simulations the moderator materials, reflective materials and structure of the PGNAA 252Cf neutrons of thermal neutron output setup were optimized. Results of the calcuations revealed that the thin layer paraffin and the thick layer of heavy water moderated effect is best for 252Cf neutrons spectrum. The new design compared with the conventional neutron source design, the thermal neutron flux and rate were increased by 3.02 times and 3.27 times. Results indicate that the use of this design should increase the neutron flux of prompt gamma-ray neutron activation analysis significantly. Our finding that you may proceed without an amendment is based on the following understanding. If your understanding differs, please inform us. It is our understanding that you want to use the Adelphi Technology DD-108 Neutron Generator described at http://www.adelphitech.com/products/dd108.html. The technical brochure located at http://www.adelphitech.com/pdfs/DD108-9_generator_Flier_24-Nov- 14_A.PDF states that the device uses deuterium gas to produce 2.45 MeV neutrons. The NRC does not regulate the possession and use of deuterium, so there is no need to add the device to one of your NRC licenses. PLEASE NOTE – NRC regulates tritium and a license amendment would be needed to possess and use a tritium neutron generator. Our criticality safety evaluation concluded that using a neutron source will affect the fission rate, but will not affect the neutron multiplication or criticality analysis. From the description and pictures of the neutron generator, it appears that it would only contain a small amount of deuterium. As long as this is not permitted to come into physical contact with the SNM, there should be no issue. -

This book is a journey from 1945 when the first atomic bomb was detonated in the New Mexico desert to where we are today. It’s an interesting and sometimes bizarre journey. It can also be horribly frightening. Today, there are enough nuclear weapons to destroy the civilized world several times over. Over 23,000. “Enough to make the rubble bounce,” Winston Churchill said. The United States alone has over 10,000 warheads in what’s called the ‘enduring stockpile.’ In my time, we took care of things Mano-a-Mano. -

Wrighta and Lars-Erik De Geer b aUNSW Canberra, School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences, Research Group on Science & Security, The Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra BC, Australia; b(Retired) FOI, Swedish Defense Research Agency, and the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation, Flädervägen , Upplands Väsby, Sweden ABSTRACT ARTICLE HISTORY On 22 September 1979 two optical sensors on U.S. satellite Vela Received March 6911 detected a double-flash of light that appeared characteristic Accepted October of an atmospheric nuclear explosion conducted over the south- ern Atlantic or Indian Ocean. It became known as the Vela Inci- dent, Event 747, or Alert 747. An anomaly between the amplitude of the two signals during the second pulse led a U.S. govern- ment expert panel established to assess the event to conclude in mid-1980 that a more likely explanation was the impact of a small meteoroid on the satellite, the debris from which reflected sunlight into the sensors’ field of view. No model was presented to support the contention, and a similar anomaly—known as background modulation—was a given for the second pulse of all confirmed explosions detected by Vela, though beginning later. Nonetheless, this event has remained the subject of intense debate. This article reviews the evidence and presents an updated analysis of the original Vela signal based on recently declassi- fied literature and on modern knowledge of interplanetary dust and hyper velocity impact. Given the geometry of the satellite, and that the bulk of the surface comprised solar panels, much of the debris from any collision would be carried away from the sensors’ field of view. -

I was shocked to learn that our government, Yes, You guessed it, the same government that looses all of our money in the Stock Market and Mortgage Market and puts space shuttles up, launches missiles that attack and kill other missiles and builds Nuclear Submarines so sophisticated that they are impossible to detect underwater has lost a Hydrogen Bomb close to a major American city and can’t find it! And as a middle manager in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers for over 30 years I was never officially informed of this fact! I had to learn of this disturbing event on TV! It was on The Discovery Channel one day and titled, “America’s Lost H- Bomb” and was indeed an eye opener.
