P.G. Wodehouse : Summer Lightning before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Summer Lightning:

It has it all -Lord ; his prize winning Black Berkshire pig, the ; his secretary, the Efficient Baxter; the Honorable (whose memoirs are the cause of all the excitement); Beach the Butler; and of course, an impostor and some star-crossed lovers. From Wodehouse's preface to the book:"A certain critic - for such men, I regret to say, do exist - made the nasty remark about my last novel that it contained `all the old Wodehouse characters under different names'. He has probably by now been eaten by bears, like the children who made mock of the prophet Elisha: but if he still survives he will not be able to make a similar charge against Summer Lightning. With my superior intelligence, I have outgeneralled the man this time by putting in all the old Wodehouse characters under the same names. Pretty silly it will make him feel, I rather fancy."This book was also published as "Fish Preferred."0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Balm for the soul in these chaotic times.By Carmen DukemanI LOVE P.G. WODEHOUSE STORIES! Years ago I obtained a bunch of his books and enjoyed them greatly. Now I am enjoying them on my kindle. No matter how bad the day was and how many people irritated me, a chapter or two of Wodehouse in the evening and the world is right again and I am laughing ...... 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed Summer LightningBy CustomerIf I could give this book more stars, I would. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed Summer Lightning. This is BY FAR one of P. G. Wodehouse's best works, and a great follow-up to my favorite Wodehouse piece, Leave It To . Wodehouse is one of the very few authors who can leave me laughing out loud, and this piece drew forth many such wonderful moments. Summer Lightning is a MUST-READ!

While sleeps in the summer sun, the Hon. Galahad Threepwood, brother of the Earl of Emsworth, is busily engaged in writing his Reminiscences, and they look set to be as warm as the weather, if not warmer. For Galahad has led a thoroughly misspent life, and his acquaintances can all too easily recall their past follies in his company. Reputations are at stake and even the nobility and gentry are beginning to panic. And while various attempts are made to prevent his stories seeing the light of day, none are more curious than the sensational kidnapping of 's prize-winning sow, the Empress of Blandings.…

"To have one of his books in your hand is to possess by way of a pill that can relieve anxiety, rageiness, or an afternoon-long tendency towards the sour. Paper has rarely been put to better use than printing Wodehouse." -- Caitlin Moran "Not only the funniest English novelist who ever wrote but one of our finest stylists. His world is perfect, his writing is perfect. What more is there to be said?" -- Susan Hill "P. G. Wodehouse is the gold standard of English wit." -- Christopher Hitchens "An incomparable and timeless genius." -- Kate Mosse "P. G. Wodehouse should be prescribed to treat depression. Cheaper, more effective than valium and far, far more addictive." -- Olivia WilliamsFrom the Back CoverA Blandings novel ‘You don’t analyse such sunlit perfection, you just bask in its warmth and splendour.’ Stephen Fry The Empress of Blandings, prize-winning pig and all-consuming passion of Clarence, Ninth Earl of Emsworth, has disappeared. Blandings Castle is in uproar and there are suspects a-plenty – from Galahad Threepwood (who is writing memoirs so scandalous they will rock the aristocracy to its foundations) to the Efficient Baxter, chilling former secretary to Lord Emsworth. Even Beach the Butler seems deeply embroiled. And what of Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe, Clarence’s arch-rival, and his passion for prize-winning pigs? With the castle full of deceptions and impostors, will Galahad's memoirs ever see the light of day? And will the Empress be returned...?About the AuthorP. G. Wodehouse was born in England in 1881 and in 1955 became an American citizen. He published more than ninety books and had a successful career writing lyrics and musicals in collaboration with Jerome Kern, Guy Bolton, and Cole Porter, among others.
