With all of the success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams the last several years - eleven NCAA Tour nament appearances in thirteen seasons - it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. McFadden has been named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year SEAMUS a record seven times (2000, '99, McFADDEN '98, '95, '94, '92, '86); won five wee IIINDl'EGlli 30th Season championships; has coached eight McFadden At USD WCC Defensive Players of the Year, six Year Overall WCC NCAA wee Offensive Players of the 2007 11 -8-1 8-3-1 Year and two WCC Freshman Players 2006 10-8-1 5-6-1 of the Year. The 1989 14-6-1 2-3-0 Toreros reached a national ranking as high as 3rd before finishing the season tenth 1988 10-8-2 1-3-1 overall (program-best). 1987 12-7-2 McFadden 1986 19-4-1 arrived at USO in 1979 and fielded USD's first team in the fall of 1980. That 1985 7- 11 -2 same year he was quoted in the team's yearbook as saying: "I have no doubts that 1984 4-12-4 in the near future the University of San Diego will become a force to be reckoned 1983 1-14-0 1982 3_1 5_1 with in Southern intercollegiate soccer:' How prophetic his words turned 1981 5-12-1 out to be. 1980 0-12-0 The 1986 Toreros won 19 of 24 games. The 1990 squad, led by the first of Totals 294-210-44; 74-53-12 WCC McFadden's four All-Americans, dropped just three games the entire season and \ * Won or shared WCC title ------;::::=.iir::;::::::"!lrlaldJv::;a:::;:nced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could '.•· see the writing on the wall many years earlier, when the Irishman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time guiding Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San Diego Sec tion titles and the La Jolla Cup. The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego's best local talent. Student-ath letes, who in the past had looked outside the city to showcase their talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing to the NCAA Championship Game. Coaching Staff (1-r) Guillermo Rodriguez, Brian Quinn, Seamus McFadden, The 54-year-old McFadden seems to save his best coaching Mike Nicholson for the big games. Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked away with stunning upsets over the heavily-favored Bruins. In 1994, USO shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cable television audience. In 1998, USO upset Cal State Fullerton, the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, atTitan Stadium in first round action. In 1999 the Toreros defeated then No. 1-ranked Santa Clara on the road, 2-1 in overtime. USO is 8-10 in NCAA Tournament games under McFadden's direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976. That same sum mer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to his homeland Ireland during the summer for exhibition games against Ireland and Britain's elite. In the summer of 2002 he is took his players to England. A native of Donegal, Ireland, Seamus and his wife Davette have two daughters (Hadley & Rorye) and a son (Conor). The McFaddens reside in Rancho Penasquitos.

Torero Stadium, celebrating its 45th anniversary, is the home of the University of San Diego Football and Soccer programs. The stadium, which underwent two phases of renovation, is perfect for an exciting athletic atmosphere inside its confines.

These recent renovations were completed to host the WUSA San Diego Spirit, with over $3.5 million dollars spent to enlarge the seating areas and add spectator comforts. Torero stadium's capacity is now 7,000 for Pioneer Football League action, as well as West Coast Conference Soccer play.

The South stands feature approximately 1,100 seats with press box facilities. The stands behind the East end seat approximately 1,900 fans after Phase Two of the renovations. The existing North stands, which hold about 3,000 fans, remained as they were. The South stands feature bleacher seats with backs for increased spectator comfort. The East and North stands are all bleacher seating.

In 2001, the installation of the upgraded lighting system took place, giving Torero Stadium ample illumination for the numerous night events that take place at the stadium. The final steps included the paving of the pedestrian walkway that curves around three-quarters of the stadium, and the installation of a new state of the art sound system. The final piece of the • renovations was a Daktronics video board that plays movie clips, replays, as well as scoreboard information. The playing surface is "Bullseye" Bermuda grass, with soccer dimensions measur ing 118 yards x 72 yards, with football conforming to NCAA regulations. 23

The University ofSan Diego is very proud of the student-athletes that represent our institution on 16 men's and women's NCAA Division-I athletic teams. These are proud and serious competitors, honored to represent the University. The dedication you witness on the playing fields, on the court, on the course, or in the water is greatly matched in the classrooms, the laboratories, on stage, or in the community. Last year forty percent of our student-athletes carried a grade-point average above 3.2, and nine of our teams had a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0. Athletics is vital to the University ofSan Diego, a way students, faculty, staff and alumni come together as one community. I am both a university president and a Torero fan; I look forward to sharing the excitement ofTorero athletics with our many fans. Dr. Mary E. Lyons

The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university whose buildings became the inspiration for USD 's architectural style.

Under the leadership of Mother Rosalie Hill of the Society of the Sacred Heart and Bishop Charles Francis Buddy of the Diocese of San Diego, the University of San Diego began as separate colleges for men and women. The first classes met in 1952; the School of Law opened its doors in 1954. By the late 1960's it became clear that both colleges would benefit from combining academic resources, and in 1972 the University of San Diego became a single coeducational Catholic university.

Now governed by a board of trustees independent from the founding organizations, USD is a Roman Catholic institution that wel comes students, faculty and staff of diverse religions, traditions and remains dedicated to the values originally articulated by Mother Hill and Bishop Buddy. Students choose from more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degrees programs in academic divisions including the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Business Administration, Leadership and Education Sciences, Law and Nursing and Health Science.

Men aspiring to the Roman Catholic priesthood prepare for their vocation at the St. Francis Center for Priestly Formation.

The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USD has completed numerous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000 the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a 5, 100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USD basketball and volleyball. Two years ago, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus, and in 2003 the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology opened. A five-story Spanish Renaissance parking garage (1,100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories. 25

'The greatest challenge to a Division I athlete is to balance the demands of sport while taking full advantage of the educational experience offered. The purpose of our program is to assist student-athletes in meeting this challenge by offering tutoring, advising, mentoring and a quiet environment to study. The Academic Support Program is designed to assist students in adjusting to life at USO and developing sound academic and career plans. By promoting a phi losophy of individual responsibility, which encourages each student-athlete to value their educational experience, the academic support program assists each athlete to realize their full potential." -- Shaney Fink

Torero Athletic Performance Training

The University of San Diego athletic department recognizes the need for all athletes of all sports to engage in a comprehensive strength and conditioning program. The USO strength and conditioning program has been designed to develop functional strength, speed, power and endurance. The development of these physical attributes is ineffective if the athletes are not able to carry them over to the playing field. Adhering to a properly designed program of strength training, conditioning and nutrition can enable our men \ and women to become the best possible athletes they can be, while simultaneously reducing the incidence of injury. The heart of the strength and conditioning program is the Jenny Craig Pavilion fitness center (3,800 square feet) and the USO Sports Center weight room (5,000 square feet). Both weight rooms contain Olympic platforms, free-weights, selectorized machines, dumbbells and cardiovascular equipment, and are open exclusively to student-athletes at specific times each day. USO student-athletes receive intensive instruction on proper weight training technique; speed, power and agility development; and sport-specific conditioning. Their strength and conditioning programs are specific to the nature of their sport or position. Each athlete is individually monitored throughout their program to ensure the greatest chance of athletic progress.
