2 ARC ANGEL– Rabbi Susie Heneson Moskowitz

was recently doing an exercise in which I articulated my philosophy for Temple Beth Torah. I TBT is a place where meaningful experiences lead to connections with G!d, other people, Judaism and Israel through Talmud Torah (Study), Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World), Chesed (Act of Caring) and Chavurah (Community).

And then I wanted to distill it into one word. The most important part of TBT to me is the CONNECTIONS we make. Sometimes they are connections with the Rabbi or Cantor, sometimes with a teacher or staff member or a board member. More often than not, it is the connections between TBT families. Maybe, its the friends you made in Nursery School or the like-minded person you met while serving on a committee or in a class. It could be a connection from a zoom service at which we celebrated an anniversary or other special moment.

Here are 8 ways for YOU to Connect:

Chanukah – Join us each night for Candle Lighting and Activity Classes – Learn with others in the community in small groups Calls and texts – Check in with one another Committee Meetings – This is a great way to get involved and have your voice heard Community – Join our new Village Movement Project - more info to follow -Help us to help those in need in the community (Gerald Ryan Outreach, LICH, Mercy Soup Kitchen, United Hatzalah). Contributions - give to Kol Nidre, Tzedakah projects & other Campaigns Chesed (Caring) - Join TLC@TBT to make sure all our members are ok during our shelter in place especially as winter approaches. Chavurah - create a TBT group that you can do something you are interested with (walk dogs, play softball, knit, cook for the soup kitchen or TBT families, etc.)

Be part of our TBT Connection. Think about-What is your favorite way to connect with TBT? Are you doing it? Can you invite someone else to join you? What are you doing to help others connect and to stay connected?

Chag Orim Samaeach - May this Chanukah fill you with light!

L’shalom,

Rabbi Susie Heneson Moskowitz

4 Presidents message… Vanessa Newman, Temple President

Dear Temple Family,

Our boys are home from school and our house is full again with love and laughter! Although we celebrated Thanksgiving differently this year, we made the best of it. I hope you were able to make the best of this holiday. Let’s all be thankful for Zoom!

This election has been challenging. We may have different political views, but we are still a temple community who share many Jewish values that no election can take away. We need to come together and respect our differing views.

Our building remains open for staff, clergy, Nursery/Hebrew School and small Bar/Bat Mitzvah services. Rabbi Wiesenberg, Jen Fusco along with their Administrators (Stacy Becker and Didi Poliak) and all teachers are running stellar programs with very happy children and parents. I applaud each of them with how incredibly hard they work each day with their passion to teach our children under these circumstances. Rabbi Moskowitz and Cantor Appelbaum do not skip a beat with their incredibly full schedules and creating ways to remain connected. Our office staff and custodians are bar none with the care they take into the welfare of our Temple and community.

On January 14th we will be presenting the Benchmark and Listening Campaign results. We have identified areas and created goals based on the results to continue to grow a Temple community.

What we need from you:

• I cannot stress enough how important it is to continue supporting TBT. We are all working hard to keep our Temple afloat as we know once we get past this our building will be bustling once again and fully operational. We will be continuing to collect Kol Nidre pledges through the end of the year. You can also make tax deductible end of year donations. Every donation makes a difference and helps support your community.

• Get involved, be present and join the many opportunities and events available. There is something for everyone. Our weekly emails and website illustrate all of the events/programs. Have an idea? Bring it to us and let’s make it happen.

• Patience, flexibility, understanding and basic kindness to your fellow members and the staff serving the needs of the community. Despite many of us experiencing COVID fatigue (including myself), it is important to not let our guard down and continue with best practices to keep yourself and community safe. The world is different and we must adhere to a new normal and continue to reimagine how we connect with one another.

Whether we are together in person, virtual or spiritual, Temple Beth Torah is here for you in every way. Happy Chanukah and wishing all a better 2021! Be well.

L’Shalom,

Vanessa Newman Temple President

5 ADEPT Winter Speaker Series Adult Education and Entertainment Programs

Monday, December 7th @ 7:00—8:30 pm TBT Schmooze Group : A virtual presentation by Michael Palmer on "Eric Mendelsohn: Synagogue Architect with a Vision." The program will be a approximately a one hour talk with pictures followed by questions and answers. This will be a presentation of the Jewish history of Mendelsohn’s times through his biography. His story is fascinating and relevant, since the Jewish issues in his life and times are with us still today.

Eric Mendelsohn designed and built four synagogues in the United States that became benchmarks for modern American synagogue architecture, as Neville Teller wrote in the Jerusalem Post. The aim of my book is to bring Mendelsohn’s lyrical architecture to the attention of contemporary Jewish communities and to discuss the roots of his Jewish identity, from which his synagogue architecture arose. An historical fiction set after the Shoah. It explores the impact of immigration, Jewish identity, prejudice, secrets, and lies on parents and children in Bellerose, Queens during the 50’s.

This is Dr. Ain’s award-winning, debut novel, the result of her life-long quest to learn more about the Holocaust, a thirst that was first triggered by reading “The Diary of Anne Frank”. She lives on Dix Hills with her husband, Stewart, a journalist.

6 FUNDRAISING UPDATES

emple Beth Torah has been working hard to bring you activities and events that bring FUN to our members. 2020 has been a unprecedented year, but we have Tfound ways to enjoy moments and even laugh together. We have had two successful movie nights, on our back lawn - Parent Trap & Disney’s Onward. We had around 25 people at each (socially distancing of course), and had a great time. We have arranged a fitness class for those of you who wanted some instruction. We also enjoyed an amazing outdoor concert with Wade Preston and our recent Zoom Comedy Night and auction, which was a huge success. We want to say thank YOU to all of you participated in any or all of our events. Thank you to those of you who spent Comedy night with us and those of you who enjoyed your meal from Cirella’s. We hope you enjoyed the night.

We are always planning new things to do together, if you have any ideas that can enrich our lives through social events (zoom or socially distanced), please reach out and let us know. Happy Chanukah ! Happy and Healthy New Year!

Naomi, Rich & Sindy Committee Chairs

Thank you to our Sponsors on Comedy Night

7 BROTHERHOOD UPDATES

T he TBT Brotherhood has continued to be active during these challenging times. Together with Sisterhood, the Brotherhood sponsored pizza and refreshments at a welcome back event held outside in September 13, 2020. On September 27, 2020, the Brotherhood erected the Sukkah. On October 18, 2020, the Brotherhood enjoyed a socially distant bagel brunch outside at the Kreit house. Members of the Brotherhood have participated in the recent builds for Habitat for Humanity and unloading food for Thanksgiving at the Gerald Ryan Outreach Center. The Brotherhood meets the first Wednesday of most months and is working on programming for the Winter months. Wishing you a bright, safe and Happy Chanukah!

8 SISTERHOOD UPDATES

A s Chanukah nears, let us reflect on our Jewish identity and discover how you can become more involved. Our Temple’s Sisterhood is a wonderful organization that allows us to make a difference in our community, develop life-long friendships and support our Synagogue in many ways. Whether you have been a member for years, are a new member, or are considering joining, we would love your input. With all that is going on in this world today, we are looking for creative ideas in which we can serve you, the Temple, and our community. Please consider getting involved and making our Sisterhood a place where we work together for the benefit of the Congregation. We’re looking forward to a new, and better 2021, where we can strengthen our connections to our Jewish heritage and enrich our lives through social events, educational and spiritual programs, fundraising and community service.

9 A Message From The Education Chair

Greetings!

November and December always bring us back to the thought of gratitude. It is a wonderful part of life to be able to receive and to give. Our community always seems to be able to step up to this challenge each and every year. Throughout the year, it is my hope that the Religious School Committee continues with this theme and gives back whenever we can to our Temple, local community and to one another.

A huge thank you to all those who have taken on the role of Room Parents to our Religious School classrooms! Every month parents will receive a letter from their Room Parent with information from mitzvot ideas, collage reminders, temple wide fundraisers and more! Our room parents are there to open up the lines of communication and help enhance connections. Social lists were distributed to each class, if you did not receive one please reach out to me. Please utilize those lists to connect the children through these times when communication is challenging.

A few ‘Todas’ we must give! First, thank you for all those who sent in left over candy. The candy was donated to a local charity, Helping Hand Rescue. Sweet treat packages were created to go along with meal pickups for those in need throughout the month of November and December. Secondly, your generous donations to the Lend a Hand Family program has also been greatly appreciated as Alan and Bruria will be sure to benefit from your kindness. Mitzvot shouldn’t end during times of a pandemic or at any time for that matter. Our children are watching as we continue to give to our community even during these tough times, learning to be thankful for what they have and grateful they can give.

Religious Education also continues. Although we as parents don’t have the joy this year of walking our children into classes and mingling with other parents at pickup, we can find joy in the fact that we have modified opportunities. Our community is strong and all of this is temporary. In the Spring we look forward to reflecting on the school year and what we can do the next to enhance our programs. Further information in February and March will follow for those who would like to participate.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Hanukkah! May 2021 be a year of health, growth and love.

Warmest wishes, Melissa Zonis Religious School Education Chair

Dear Parents,

Where has the time gone?! This has been a year like no other and our teachers and students are amazing at adapting to the change we have implemented into our school year. Rotating through different stations outdoors, our children are learning in a whole new way. Through generous donations from our NS and temple families, picnic tables and climbing equipment are now set up in different locations throughout our backyard allowing our children to work and play outside all day. The new deck that was built over the summer is a fabulous addition to our new outdoor classroom space, sheltered with the sukkah walls to protect from the winter winds. We have had our first Zoom Tot Shabbat last week and it was such a pleasure to see all our families together. We hope that you will join us for our Zoom Chanukah Bingo Night on Monday, December 14th at 5:30 PM. Looking forward to a wonderful and safe year at TBT!

Our teens are the best. Even in a Pandemic, our 8th-12th graders have worked tirelessly to make the world a better place over these past few months! Pictured here are just 2 of our most recent events: Our Target Run and our Island Harvest Food Drive. Our students at the Target Run shopped for 15 children living below the poverty line in our own community. Our Island Harvest Food Drive collected 463 lbs and $$$$$ in just 4 short hours!

Our Madrichim (School Helpers) are the VERY best. Since September, Eden Spielman, Brooke Strow, Emma Bezack and Jacob Muscolino have committed to helping some of our youngest students (K-2) in classes online and in person; while Michael Shwom, Samantha Greenberg and Aaron Rubin have braved wind, rain and sun to make sure our drop-off and pick-ups go smoothly and safely.

We are eagerly planning some virtual and in person events this winter! Keep an eye out for information about LASAGNA LOVE, a way to cook for moms in need from the comfort and safety of your own home. Also keep an eye out for information about our Virtual Game night.
