  • A Hidden Culture Anne Wood on How Art Helps Young Children Develop
Perspectives on the value of art and culture Children and the Arts: A Hidden Culture Anne Wood on how art helps young children develop READ ON Anne Wood Back Next 02 Anne Wood is one of the most influential figures in children’s television. Born in Spennymoor, County Durham, she grew up in the mining community of Tudhoe Colliery then began a career as a secondary school teacher. She was a leading voice for children’s literature before launching a career in broadcasting. In 1984, she formed Ragdoll Productions, known for such television series as Rosie & Jim, Tots TV, Brum, In the Night Garden, Twirlywoos – and Teletubbies. She is the founder of The Ragdoll Foundation (www.ragdollfoundation.org.uk), which aims to provide a space for alternative thinking, voices and practices, to seek new creative solutions and partners, and to collaborate and share knowledge. It is currently leading the Save Kids’ Content UK campaign (www.savekidscontent.org.uk), which has the particular objective of safeguarding the production of UK- originated television for children. As a cultural notion, childhood emerged in western society somewhere around the 1850s and lasted until somewhere around the 1950s when the cult of the teenager first made itself felt in the USA, and spread around the world. Now, in the 21st century, we hear children are ‘growing up too fast’ or that ‘childhood is lost’. It is not that children are biologically changing. Although many may be taller, more robust and have greater life expectancy than previous generations, essentially children are no different. They have the same need to explore life and navigate it successfully, which has always been central to humanity.

  • Monstrous Aunties: the Rabelaisian Older Asian Woman in British Cinema and Television Comedy
Monstrous Aunties: The Rabelaisian older Asian woman in British cinema and television comedy Estella Tincknell, University of the West of England Introduction Representations of older women of South Asian heritage in British cinema and television are limited in number and frequently confined to non-prestigious genres such as soap opera. Too often, such depictions do little more than reiterate familiar stereotypes of the subordinate ‘Asian wife’ or stage the discursive tensions around female submission and male tyranny supposedly characteristic of subcontinent identities. Such marginalisation is compounded in the relative neglect of screen representations of Asian identities generally, and of female and older Asian experiences specifically, within the fields of Film and Media analysis. These representations have only recently begun to be explored in more nuanced ways that acknowledge the complexity of colonial and post-colonial discoursesi. The decoupling of the relationship between Asian and Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage, together with the foregrounding of religious rather than national-colonial identities, has further rendered the topic more complex. Yet there is an exception to this tendency. In the 1990s, British comedy films and TV shows began to carve out a space in which transgressive representations of aging Asian women appeared. From the subversively mischievous Pushpa (Zohra Segal) in Gurinder Chadha’s debut feature, Bhaji on the Beach (1993), to the bickering ‘competitive mothers’ of the ground-breaking sketch show, Goodness, Gracious Me (BBC 1998 – 2001, 2015), together 1 with the sexually-fixated grandmother, Ummi (Meera Syal), in The Kumars at Number 42 (BBC, 2001-6; Sky, 2014), a range of comic older female figures have overturned conventional discourses.

  • Mention the War: British Sitcoms and Military Masculinity
93 ANETTE PANKRATZ Mention the War: British Sitcoms and Military Masculinity 1. Introduction "Military virtues such as aggression, strength, courage and endurance have repeatedly been defined as the natural and inherent qualities of manhood" and "the soldier has become the quintessential figure of masculinity" (Dawson 1994, 1; cf. Braun 1996, 180; Connell 2005, 73, 213). Despite the assertive tone of these statements, military masculinity is fraught with contradictions and paradoxes. Soldiering, especially the killing of people in combat, can be seen as morally ambiguous (Braun 1996, 180). More importantly, the ideal type of military masculinity can never be reached and is enmeshed in a "dense web of double binds" (Belkin 2012, 4), that is, in disciplinary rituals that address soldiers as "girls" or "poofs" or in exercises that infantilise and feminise them (Belkin 2012, 33). Since the abolishment of National Service in 1961, serving in the army has become a very specialised occupation for a minority of the population in Britain and the warrior hero has been superseded by figures such as the "entrepreneurial individual" (Connell 2005, 254). (British) situation comedies featuring soldiers, from The Army Game (ITV, 1957- 1966) to Bluestone 42 (BBC, 2013-2015), broach this field of tensions with comic intent. They operate with incongruity between the exemplary figure of the warrior hero and its real-life performance, either by turning the norm upside down or by exaggerating and stereotyping it. The implicit juxtaposition of the ideal and its comic Other also puts into play different versions of masculinity, from the anxiously overt or the supposedly 'normal' to the deficient or explicitly dissident.
