John Allison, the Elder Chapter 5: The Fifth Generation General History of the Fifth Generation This generation would be the great great great grandchildren of John Allison the Elder, each representing 1/16th of the blood line of John the Elder. The oldest of this generation was born circa 1785 and the last of the 5th generation born circa 1860's. When John DeFrance (AABAA) was born, George Washington had not yet became President. Almost all of this generation were born before the Civil War, but most lived through this period. The main movement of Allison Family started in Pennsylvania and moved westward. Very few descendants moved in a southerly direction. One group that resided in southeast Kentucky along with a few residences of Virginia, fought for the South, but large majority lived in the North and fought for the North. The Fifth Generation * V-1. John DeFrance: AABAA (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1) John was born circa 1785 and died young. * V-2. James DeFrance: AABAB (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1) James was born circa 1788 and died at age 26. * V-3. Hugh D. DeFrance: AABAC (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1) Hugh was born on Sept. 24, 1791 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania and died June 13, 1854 at Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa and is buried at Old Fairfield City Cemetery, Jefferson County, Iowa. He married Rosanna Carnes (Kerns). She was born June 5, 1811 and died Aug. 14, 1895. She remarried Andrew Hite. She is buried at Howard Grove Cemetery, Jefferson County, Iowa. 5 - 1 V-4. Sarah May DeFrance: AABAD (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1) Sarah was born Jan. 13, 1793, in Franklin County, Pennsylvania and died Nov. 8 1872 in Hancock County, West Virginia. She married John McCarty on May 30, 1809. Her husband John was born August 23, 1782 and died Sept. 25, 1846. He is buried at Founders Cemetery, Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio. They had eleven children. Sarah later married Samuel Cassidy, Samuel was born in Ireland circa 1775. Samuel and Sarah are listed in the 1850 census for Cross Creek Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania with her two youngest children Elizabeth and James. The 1860 census lists Sarah with youngest son James living in New Cumberland, Hancock County, Virginia (later West Virginia). Sarah is listed in the 1870 census of New Cumberland, Hancock County, West Virginia by herself; at age 77. The following is from; History of the State of Kansas, Doniphan County, Part 13; by William G. Cutler. This portion of the book is dealing with John and Sarah's son Hugh, but the biography mentions his father John McCarty. John McCarty, Jr., a prominent farmer of the time, who did much for the advancement of agricultural pursuits and the dignifying of labor; he was in easy circumstances, yet, through his kindness of heart and the love he bore his fellow-men in distress, he lost all his property by becoming surety for others. VI-1. Julia McCarty: AABADA (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1: Sarah, V-4) Julia was born circa 1811and married Julian Marquis. VI-2. Hephzibah McCarty: AABADB (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1: Sarah, V-4) Hephzibah was born May 9, 1812 in Pennsylvania and died Oct. 19, 1889 in Hancock County, West Virginia. She married Robert Cassidy circa 1828. Robert was born July 28, 1811 and died June 16, 1875 in New Cumberland, Hancock County, West Virginia. VI-3. Jane McCarty: AABADC (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1: Sarah, V-4), Jane was born circa 1815. She married William Lindsey circa 1833. VI-4. John D. McCarty: AABADD (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV- 1: Sarah, V-4) John was born Jan. 16, 1816 in Pennsylvania and died Sept. 26, 1855. He married Julia Anna Marquis. Julia was born Dec. 12, 1820 in Washington County, Pennsylvania and died Oct. 24, 1890 in New Cumberland, Hancock County, West Virginia. VI-5. Rebecca McCarty: AABADE (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV- 1: Sarah, V-4) Rebecca was born May 3, 1818, and died Nov. 25, 1881 in Freeport, Harrison, Ohio. Rebecca married Dr. Henry C. Black on Dec. 14, 1848. Henry was born Dec. 25, 1825 and died circa 1906. He married Jennie Lanning on Dec. 31, 1885 after the death of Rebecca. 5 - 2 VI-6. Timothy McCarty: AABADF (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV- 1: Sarah, V-4) Timothy was born circa 1821 and died before 1870. He married Ann Smith circa 1846 in Hancock County, West Virginia. * VI-7. Hugh DeFrance McCarty: AABADG (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1: Sarah, V-4) Hugh was born Mar. 9, 1822 in Washington County, Pennsylvania and died Sept. 12, 1887 at Highland, Kansas. Never marries. * VI-8. Martha McCarty: AABADH (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV- 1: Sarah, V-4) Martha was born circa 1827 and died Oct. 3, 1846. She is buried at Founders Cemetery, Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio VI-9. Keziah McCarty: AABADI (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1: Sarah, V-4) Keziah was born circa 1828 in Pennsylvania and died Nov. 6, 1882 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She married William Frobes circa 1848. William was born in Pennsylvania circa 1828 and died Feb. 13,1886 at Cuyahoga County, Ohio. VI-10. Sarah McCarty: AABADJ (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1: Sarah, V-4) Sarah was born circa 1826 and married William K. Matthewson. William was born circa 1825. VI-11. Elizabeth McCarty: AABADK (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1: Sarah, V-4) Elizabeth was born Nov. 15, 1833 in Pennsylvania and died June 21, 1915 and buried at the Burge Cemetery, New London, Henry County, Iowa. She married James Portlock on Jan. 1, 1858 in Fulton County, Illinois. James was born Oct. 16, 1833 in Indiana and died Aug. 22, 1917 and buried at Burge Cemetery, New London, Henry County, Iowa. In the 1850 census James was listed in Fulton County, Illinois and a farmer living near Table Grove, Illinois. The 1850 census lists Elizabeth living with her mother and Samuel Cassiday in Cross Creek Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The 1860 and 1870 census lists has James and Elizabeth living at New Salem, McDonough County, Illinois. Sometime in the 1870's they moved to Canaan Township, Henry County, Iowa. VI-12. James McCarty: AABADL (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1: Sarah, V-4) James was born circa 1838. James is listed in the 1850 census living with his mother and Samuel Cassiday, in the 1860 census with just his mother. V-5. Allison DeFrance: AABAE (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1) Allison was born Sept. 9, 1796 in Washington County, Pennsylvania and died Mar. 10, 1859 Donegal Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He married Martha Allender and had 11 children, she was born in 1798 and died in 1875 in Donegal Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Allison died in 1859 and Martha was living with her son; Freegift in the 1860 census for Donegal Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The 1870 census Washington County, Pennsylvania; lists, Martha Allender DeFrance living with her son, Charles. VI-13. Hugh Caldwell DeFrance: AABAEA (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1; Allison, V-5) Hugh was born May 10, 1819 in Donegal Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and died July 21, 1894 in McConnells Mills, 5 - 3 Washington County, Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Loeffler Shaler July 4, 1849 in West Alexander, Washington County, Pennsylvania. She was born 1829 in Dutch Fork, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and died 1915 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. VI-14. Jane DeFrance: AABAEB (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1; Allison, V-5) Jane was born June 19, 1821 in Raccoon Creek, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and died 1897 in Dutch Fork, Washington County, Pennsylvania. She married Abraham Morrow on February 11, 1841 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was born 1816 in Ireland, and died February 12, 1888. VI-15. John DeFrance: AABAEC (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1; Allison, V-5) John was born February 1, 1823 in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania and died March 5, 1906 in Centeville, Appanoose County, Iowa. He married first Margaret Parkinson on March 4, 1853 in Brooks County, West Virginia, then Virginia. She died Oct. 26,1888. He remarried secondly Martha Anna Ewing (AABAJB) born in July of 1833. VI-16. James DeFrance: AABAED (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1; Allison, V-5) James was born Dec. 15, 1823 in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania and died Apr. 3, 1870 in Jefferson County, Iowa. He married Susan Clemens Aug. 20, 1849. She was born May 19/20, 1824, and died Aug. 26, 1890. VI-17. Caldwell DeFrance: AABAEE (John, I-1; James, II-1; Anna, III-2: John, IV-1; Allison, V-5) Caldwell was born October 1, 1827 in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania and died February 15, 1905 in Seattle, King County, Washington. He married Margaret Drischol on Sept. 25, 1856 in Jefferson County, Iowa.
