Hoby & District Village Hall Village Hall Piano Free To A Good Home ~ Must Collect For more years than anyone can remember the village hall piano has stood sentinel by the fire exit. It is impossible to keep it in tune, there are keys missing and we can only remember it being played twice in the last 20 years (The Daniel Smith Blues Band bashed out a honky-tonk riff & Ben Pope coaxed Jerusalem out of it to accompany the WI). The Village Hall Management Committee has therefore decided that it is time to retire the piano and is offering it free to anyone who would like to give it a home. The only requirement is that you must collect it from the hall. If you would like the piano please contact Diane on: 01664 434422 or [email protected]. The Village Hall Management Committee

Currently Warner and Partners, Lodge Farm, Mill Lane, Hoby only around 3% of UK premises have access to a full fibre connection. The scheme is supplier led and therefore only accessible through broadband service providers; the vouchers are issued directly to the suppliers by government to offset the cost of the infrastructure installation. It does not matter if applicants can already access superfast broadband speeds of 30Mbps or more. The initiative is focused on gigabit speeds, equivalent to 1,000Mbps. TO APPLY: residents or businesses will have to do two things: a) Check which approved suppliers are active in the area by using the postcode search: Business: https://gigabitvoucher.culture.gov.uk/for-businesses/suppliers/ Resident: https://gigabitvoucher.culture.gov.uk/for-residents/suppliers/ b) Choose a supplier and contact them to ask for a quote. June Birth Flower The Rose

Humility, chastity, and sweetness. Sweetly scented, this flower also signifies a return to happiness.

14 Frisby School – The Life and Work of William Morris In art this term, Class 3 has been learning about the life and work of William Morris. We looked very carefully at some of his designs and used view finders to help recreate them. The children noticed that William Morris was inspired by nature and used colourful patterns. We learned that William Morris started the arts and crafts movement and encouraged artists to make things by hand. The children looked at examples of factory-made and handmade objects. We then made two paper teddy bears, one really quickly like in a factory and the other we took our time over, planning what designs and colours to use. Most of us thought that our arts and crafts style teddy bears were the best.

The children really enjoyed going out onto the field and playground to collect plants, feathers and stones to sketch. Lots of children in Class 3 have a really good eye for detail and produced the most beautifully detailed drawings. William Morris is famous for his wallpaper designs and we looked at how he made and used printing blocks to make wallpaper. The children have designed their own printing blocks which they will make from cardboard. They will use these to make their own wallpaper.

William Morris has inspired the children to produce wonderful creations. I’ve been extremely impressed by Class 3’s artwork and am certainly looking forward to displaying their finished wallpaper in school. Mrs Cooper - Class 3

Spring is definitely here! We were in the churchyard at Hoby on May 7th when we heard our first swift. Swifts always arrive back in Spring later than swallows and house martins making up this trio of species that constantly swoop across our skies catching insects in mid-air during the spring/summer months. Migration can be a treacherous time but the birds always seem to be in a hurry to complete the journey and get back to their breeding grounds to start nest building.

This was definitely true this year for the Rutland ospreys. The female bird at Manton Bay, Maya, arrived back on March 12th, the earliest return of an osprey to the UK and over the bank holiday weekend her 3 chicks have hatched. Another record broken: the earliest ever osprey chick in the UK. These can be seen from a hide on the Lyndon site at Rutland Water. If you get chance do go and see them they are a real spectacle.

So back to Hoby churchyard! Besides the birds already mentioned we had a lot of action on the ground. A pair of blackbirds were very busy searching the undergrowth collecting beaks full of food to feed their chicks (no nest was located). Jackdaws were nesting and a starling was busily flying back and forth with food to feed chicks under one of the church roof tiles.

We were also rewarded with views of 3 species of butterfly: speckled wood, large white and small white. All were in their element fluttering around the great variety of flowers. The church yard is a nature lover’s paradise at the moment. We only had a small amount of time but we saw many species of flower: primroses, cowslips, dandelions, daisies, bluebells, lady smock and speedwell. WOW! An insect’s delight, it was great to see our bees and hoverflies enjoying the bounty.

This was a real treat and a great place to sit and watch nature in action. It is such an important area in our village centre, if you have time try and take a stroll or just sit and watch. We would love to hear about any other action that is going on at other churchyards in the parish. It is easy to take nature for granted because it has always been there. In many cases, once that species or group of species has disappeared there’s no turning the clock back.

16 So please try and do your bit for nature conservation and preserve what we have now for us all and for future generations. The next day friends from Australia, who are very interested in nature, wanted to see our swift boxes and ancient verge – they were impressed! The cowslips were out and looking wonderful, although disappointingly someone had managed to drive along the verge and flatten some. Please try and encourage people to respect our ancient verge. Now is the time to start checking the information board and see how many of the species you can find throughout the season. On our return home I decided to come via Church Lane and we spotted a buzzard circling over Steve and Diane Horsfield’s house, so up went the binoculars. Whilst stood in the road, Steve and Diane appeared to see what we had spotted and kindly invited us into their garden. What a treat for our visitors and I could also show them the trees that have been planted in the parkland near the fish pond. However, we were awestruck when we got to one of the ponds and this is what we saw. A grass snake with its prey! The snake had caught a toad from the pond. Steve managed to rush and fetch his camera to record the event, before the snake slid into the pond, the toad escaped and both made a dash for cover. The toad had puncture wounds from the snake’s fangs but hopefully it will recover. A very special event witnessed by us all and I’m sure that will be one of the stories that gets relayed to the grandchildren when our friends return home to Australia. (Thank you Steve for the wonderful photograph) Candice and Garry Barker ([email protected]) 2 Allotment plots for rent If you have ever thought it would be fun and productive to have an allotment then you’re in luck because we have 2 plots for rent at the Brooksby Road allotments. If interested contact Vida at [email protected]

17 Vida’s May Gardening Tips Well I have to say that it feels like I’m just not going to catch up this year at the allotment. We took on another half plot and it was in such a mess that it’s taking a lot of our time just to get the weeds down. With that and my hard work, I shall be grateful to get at least some produce from the allotments. I have planted beetroot, potatoes, leeks, carrots, broccoli, sprouts, parsnips, flowers, runner beans, dwarf French beans, yard longs and cabbages! It sounds a lot and it is BUT it’s having the time to keep on top of the weeds that keep growing around the plants that we are finding difficult to keep up with. I’m not wishing my life away but it would be nice just to have the time to work on the plot more but never mind, when I retire it will all be sorted  The garden at home is looking lovely, it’s full of colour and more to come. The weeds here are far more under control. Nigel’s strawberry troughs are full of promise and this year we netted much earlier so we get more of the fruit than the birds do. We also netted the red, white and black currents again so we get more than the birds. We don’t mind sharing but the birds don’t seem to know what sharing means!

If you are growing outdoor tomatoes then now is the time to plant them in their final growing place. Tomatoes in the greenhouse need to be watered on a regular basis because any shortage of water will make the fruits get ‘blossom end’ disease which means that the ends of the fruit go brown and inedible so water every day to ensure the compost remains damp. Keep pinching out the side shoots on your tomatoes. If you are growing butternut squash, marrows, courgettes and pumpkins then now is the time to plant them out. They are hungry and thirsty plants so keep them well fed and watered. The pesky little bugs and grubs are on the hunt for your produce with snails, slugs, whitefly, red spider mite, aphids and butterflies helping themselves so be vigilant and use whatever method of control you prefer. In May we had some really warm days so we had lolly pops in our house as a treat and I kept the wooden sticks to use as plant markers. I didn’t want to waste them and use plastic! As you know by now, I’m very keen on things that are not only environmentally friendly but are also FREE. Don’t forget any spare plants you have can go to the plant stall for Open Gardens. Happy Gardening and don’t forget your sun hat and sun cream. Vida Gregory

What do we know about the new £20 note? Artist JMW Turner and his painting The Fighting Temeraire will feature on the new design of the Bank of 's £20 note to enter circulation in 2020. The English Romantic artist was chosen from a list of public nominations - the first time the Bank has asked who should appear on a specific banknote. The note, to be made of polymer, will eventually replace the current £20 note featuring the economist Adam Smith. The choice means all but one Bank of England banknote character will be men. Of the five characters on banknotes by 2020, other than the Queen only Jane Austen - appearing on the £10 note from 2017 - is a woman. The men who will feature by 2020 are Sir Winston Churchill on the £5 note who will replace campaigner Elizabeth Fry from September, Turner on the £20 note, and Matthew Boulton and James Watt remain on the £50 note. The Bank received 29,701 nominations from the public after it announced it wanted to celebrate an artist on the note. Some 590 eligible visual artists were considered for the honour - about a fifth of whom are women. The committee drew up a shortlist of five - Turner, filmmaker Charlie Chaplin, sculptor Barbara Hepworth, painter William Hogarth, and designer Josiah Wedgwood. The final decision was made by the Bank's governor, Mark Carney. He said diversity was a consideration in the decision, and he admitted that "further progress" was needed on all measures of diversity when thinking about representation on banknotes. However, he said the process was more transparent and independent now.

Environment Matters – Greening Framland I’m sure most would agree, the beauty of spring in Framland this year has been breath-taking. Everywhere you look green fields, gamboling lambs and the rich colours of spring flowers and tree blossom. Who can deny that we must preserve what is our current privilege for future generations?

Nearly thirty-five years ago the ‘Marks of Mission’ were developed to help us live out our Christian calling. The fifth Mark urges “To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth”. How do you think we have done during the last three plus decades?

The Church of England is part of the Anglican Communion which brings together almost 80 million people around the world. Many parishes, dioceses, individuals and faith-based development organizations are already working on local and national environmental projects. Lots of these have grown into opportunities for mission and outreach into the local community.... and we would like to help individuals and churches across Framland to join this dedicated work.

If you or your church has an interest in starting to change the way you live your lives in regard to caring for creation we would love you to join us at the ‘Greening Framland’ evening.

Kirby Bellars Art Exhibition The sale of produce, plants and books in St Peter's Church during the Kirby Bellars Art Weekend raised £356 for the church restoration fund.

Thank you to all who provided the things to sell and those who bought them.

Congratulations to Graham Swann! Well-known Frisby resident, Mr Graham Swann recently received a Mayor of Melton’s Award for his services as Chair of Frisby, Hoby and Rotherby Cricket Club.

The well-deserved award reflects all Graham’s hard work in managing the club, which he has been associated with for 38 years, and also the many hours he spends each week carrying out maintenance around the cricket ground. Since the Hoby & Rotherby Cricket Club transferred from Brooksby and became the Frisby, Hoby and Rotherby Cricket Club, it has become a tremendously valuable asset to the village not only in enabling 50 young people each year and 40 adults to participate in sport but also in being a popular venue for many other community activities. In the course of his active involvement with the club, Graham has also raised the magnificent sum £200,000 to enable the club and facilities to keep going. Graham was presented with the award by Councillor Edward Hutchison on behalf of the Mayor.

Roger James I want to thank all those who have supported Heather and me in prayer and practically during my health problems which started rather abruptly on Christmas Eve. It is only by the Grace of God and the skills of the gifted resuscitation teams at Glenfield Hospital that I survive to tell the tale. The promptness in attending of the EM Ambulance Service was greatly appreciated. It looks as if things are beginning to move forward and we look forward to rejoining the congregation. Roger James 25 Great Lane Frisby

38 47 years’ service to Rotherby Church After 47 years in office, Mrs Violet Spencer has recently stepped down as churchwarden for All Saints Church, Rotherby. Since 1971, she has served under eight rectors and has seen many changes from Hoby, Rotherby, Brooksby and Ragdale having their own rector, to Thrussington being added and finally to the formation of the Upper Wreake with Frisby and Kirby.

Vi, as she is universally known, has been conscientious in her duties, not only in making sure everything has been prepared for services, but in ensuring that the church has been kept in good order throughout that long period.

Until recently she also very kindly acted as verger for many of the weddings at Brooksby Church and regularly attended the 8.30 Holy Communion services in all six churches.

On behalf of the people of the Parish of the Upper Wreake, I offer our sincere thanks for all she has done and convey our best wishes for the future. Malcolm Britton, Vice-chair, Upper Wreake PCC

Wedding facts about the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh Did you know that Her Majesty and His Royal Highness's wedding cake was 9 feet tall? Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip first met in 1934 at the wedding of Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark to Prince George, Duke of Kent. The Wedding took place just four months later, at 10.30am on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey. On April 26 1923, The Queen's parents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (then the Duke and Duchess of York) were also married at the Abbey. The Queen (then Princess Elizabeth) was the 10th member of The Royal Family to be married at Westminster Abbey. The first Royal wedding to take place in the Abbey was on 11 November 1100, when King Henry I married Princess Matilda of Scotland. Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Michael of Kent served as page boys. The ceremony was recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio to 200 million people around the world. The hymns were "Praise, my soul, the king of heaven", and "The Lord's my Shepherd", to the Scottish tune "Crimond" attributed to Jessie Seymour Irvine, which was largely unknown in the Church of England at the time. Hundreds of people from across the UK sent The Princess their coupons to help with the dress, although they had to be returned as it would be illegal to use them.

Friends of Frisby Church Fundraising event with U3A’s Generation Gap Guitar group It was Saturday evening, the 28th April, and the Church in Frisby was truly rocking and a’ rolling to the music of the 50s and 60s. The Friends of Frisby Church had invited the guitar group to give a concert and singalong in St Thomas a Beckett Church in aid of funds to build toilet facilities and a servery in the Church. The Generation Gap was formed in 2009 when a Melton U3A* member, Brian Donovan announced that he was starting up a (acoustic) guitar group. The new group concentrated on old songs, from the 50s, 60s & 70s, and were soon playing and singing along.

Over the last few years group numbers have remained steady. The addition of a section of lady vocalists, to provide lead vocals and backing, greatly broadened the music they could perform. The Generation Gap limit their gigs to one per month, all in aid of charity, and are generally happy to perform for whoever is mad enough to invite them!

*For more information about the Melton Mowbray Branch of the U3A see: http://www.u3ameltonmowbray.org.uk/

The event raised £700 and was much enjoyed by all. Pru and her team provided the most delicious canapés and other mouth-watering morsels, washed down with Prosecco and red wine.

Friends of Frisby Church are looking for members to help with their fundraising. Please contact us: Pru Smith – 434468 - [email protected] Simon Blake – 434580 - [email protected] Diana Patterson – 434099 – [email protected]
