This Study Was Based on the Premise That the Igbos' Concept of Flight Was Not Only
ABSTRACT AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES THOMAS, DARLENE D. B.A. LIMESTONE COLLEGE, 2000 FLIGHT: AN EPIC JOURNEY IN THE LEGEND OF THE FLYING AFRICANS Committee Chair: Josephine Bradley, Ph.D. Thesis dated May 2015 This study examines the term flight, as both motif and as consciousness in the legend of the flying Africans, and the cosmological differences as represented in four texts: Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, Paula Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow, Ralph Ellison's Flying Home, and Octavia Butler's Kindred. Flight is measured in terms of recurring patterns found within the texts and their meanings given by the authors. The problem of this research stems from the issue that the Gullah, direct descendents of the flying Africans (Igbos) along the Coastal Sea Islands of the United States, have upheld an age hierarchy of secrecy such that there is limited research in the area of flight, allowing this group to maintain a unique African identity for over 200 years. This study was based on the premise that the Igbos' concept of flight was not only a survival mechanism but also a way to form community and identity and to keep the memories of their ancestors alive. This idea is called epic memory, that which has to be pieced together in order for the person to be made whole. An intertextual historiography analysis approach was utilized as the methodology to better understand the life and culture of the Gullah and Igbos. Karla F. C. Holloway argues that revision, (re)membrance, and recursion are always present when analyzing "speakerly texts." The researcher found that numerous recurring patterns within the selected texts began to form meaning around beliefs and myth within culture remembered during epic events. -

Bradley “Ooman’s Wuk: Gullah Womanism in the Creative Works of African American Women” investigates Gullah history and culture as a usable past for modern African American female artists. This project explores the history of rice production and the vital but under-discussed role of women that led to the African retentions still at work on the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia. By exploring the often disavowed female roles, this dissertation argues that once acknowledged, the Gullah woman’s role as ‘keepa a da kulca’ formulates a Gullah womanism or a form of cultural and community activism that is found in the daily lives of the female descendants of Africans living on the Sea Islands. -

National Roots and Diasporic Routes: Tracing the Flying African Myth in Canada by Katherine Thorsteinson A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Department of English, Film, and Theatre University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright © 2014 by Katherine Thorsteinson i Abstract This thesis analyzes the presence and progression of the Flying African Myth in Canada— a myth which originally reflected the desires for escape and cross-Atlantic return shared by generations of Black slaves throughout the Americas. While related West African themes of spirit flight and human transformation do suggest a historic relationship, it was only in the New World that human powers of flight emerged. Thus, a new mythology sprung from the desires to transcend the bonds of slavery and return to an African home. However, despite being well documented as Pan-American, this myth has gone largely uninvestigated in its Canadian context thus far— an omission which follows an extensive pattern of Black cultural erasure in Canada as well as the exclusion of Canada in much Black diasporic scholarship. These absences lead to my exploration of the unique circumstances in Canada that continue to influence this myth, including the constant "struggle against erasure" and the “fragile coalition of identities” that constitute the Black diaspora in Canada, as well as federal legislation that protects the nation’s self-image as a multicultural “mosaic.” I argue not only that the myth exists more extensively in Canadian oral and written literatures than may be expected, but that the myth may be alternately interpreted as a method of preserving Canadian national roots as well as navigating Black diasporic routes. -

Fly Away Home: Tracing the Flying African Folktale from Oral Literature to Verse and Prose An Honors Thesis by Samantha R. ' ... ..... - .... ,'"' - ,,' Abstract This examination of the Flying African myth is divided into three areas of exploration. In Chapter I the creation of folklore, especially within the African American community, is investigated alongside of several versions of the Flying African folktale recorded during 1939 and 1940 off of the coast of Georgia. The second chapter addresses the influence of specific elements of the Flying African folktale on the Black Aesthetic and African-American poetry of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including the transformation of the myth into verse form. Chapter III deals solely with Toni Morrison's fictional novel Song ojS%mon, explaining how the novel functions as a return to oral literature via the transformation of the Flying African myth in written form. The three chapters work together to establish the significant literary influence of the Flying African folktale outside of the sphere of scientific study of African-American folklore.
