2 ТОРЖЕСТВО ПРАВОСЛАВ'Я НЕДIЛЯ 1-ША ВЕЛИКОГО ПОСТУ

У першу нед i л ю Великого посту свята Церква згадує перемогу православ'я над єресями, тому цей день називається "Недiлею православ'я". Це свято було установлене у 842 р. при вiзантiйському iмператорi Михаїлi i його матерi Феодорi, к о л и Константинопольським Патрiархом був св. Мефодiй. Свято було встановлене пiсля перемоги над iконоборчою єрессю. Але оскiльки перемогою над цiєю єрессю св. Церква остаточно розкрила православне християнське вiровчення i сформулювала його у постановах семи Вселенських Соборiв, то подiя ця називається не торжеством iконошанування, а Торжеством православ'я. Це не означає, що пiсля середини IX столiття бiльше не з'являлося єресей; це значить, що всi наступнi єресi, якими б вони не були численними i рiзноманiтними, осуджуються постановами семи Вселенських Соборiв. У сучасному християнствi розповсюдженими єресями є неправильне вчення про Iсуса Христа, яке має мiсце у протестантському середовищi, та нешанування iкон, тобто єресь iконоборча. Сучаснi єретики називають Iсуса Христа Великим Учителем в iсторiї людства, моральне вчення Якого незрiвнянно вище за усi релiгiї свiту. Однак вони

3 вiдкидають чудеса Iсуса Христа, i навiть Його Воскресiння тлумачать по-своєму, не вiрячи у воскресiння Його тiла. Все це свята Церква перемогла у боротьбi з єресями протягом семи столiть. Якщо Iсус Христос не є Син Божий, що народився вiд Духа Святого i Пречистої Дiви Марiї, i не воскрес iз мертвих, то нiякого спасiння людства не вiдбулося. За словами ап. Павла, тодi ми залишаємося у грiхах, i смерть панує над людством. У такому випадку даремним є наше життя. Воно не має нiякого сенсу. Життя має велику цiннiсть тому, що Господь наш Iсус Христос - втiлений Син Божий, одна з трьох Осiб, Iпостасей Святої Тройцi - спас нас вiд грiха i смертi. Яким би праведним не було наше життя, все одно ми залишались би у рабствi грiха i смертi. Без Христа Спасителя ми є нiщо - прах i попiл. Смерть все знищує: i красу, i багатство, i любов, i славу. Тому тi християни, якi не вiрять у Божество Iсуса Христа, є єретики, перемогу над якими свята Церква сьогоднi святкує. Iншою розповсюдженою єрессю сучасного християнства є iконоборство, тобто нешанування iкон Iсуса Христа, Божої Матерi i святих. На цю єресь хворiє все протестантство. Але серед протестантiв є такi, що просто не визнають iкон, а є й такi, що свiдомо ведуть боротьбу проти iконошанування. Цi єретики називають святi iкони iдолами. В цьому протестантському вченнi немає нiчого нового. Все це вже було в iсторiї. Сучаснi iконоборцi мають досить примiтивну фiлософiю: з їхньої точки зору iкона - це iдол, а друга заповiдь Божа забороняє iдолопоклонство. Ось i все обгрунтування. Древнi греки для цiєї тези мали глибоке фiлософське обгрунтування. Вони вчили, що матерiя є зло. Бог не може з'єднатися зi злом, тому, за їх вченням, Син Божий не може втiлитися в стать чоловiчу. Бiблiя вiдкидає таке вчення. Святе Письмо ясно говорить, що все, що створив Бог, є добро. Матерiя є добро, тому що її створив Бог. Бог не створив зла. Тому i плоть наша є добром; навколишнє середовище, весь космос - є добро. Тому заперечення втiлення Сина Божого безпiдставне. Син Божий втiлився

4 вiд Духа Святого i Пресвятої Дiви Марiї. Церква стверджує цю вiру на Вселенських Соборах. Iконоборцi не заперечують, що матерiя є добро. Вони не визнають вчення древнiх грецьких фiлософiв про те, що матерiя є зло. Але вони наполягають на тому, що Бог є Дух, а дух зобразити фарбами неможливо. Дiйсно, образ Бога як духовної iстоти неможливо написати фарбами. Iконоборцi були б правими, якби Син Божий не втiлився i не став Чоловiком. На iконах зображається людська природа Господа нашого Iсуса Христа. А коли зображаються Бог Отець i Бог Дух Святий, то Бог Отець у тому виглядi, в якому Вiн явився пророку Iсаї, а Дух Святий - у виглядi голуба - на рiчцi Йорданi. Православнi християни вшановують Господа нашого Iсуса Христа, Його Пречисту Матiр i святих, зображених на iконах, а не дошки i фарби. Крiм того, друга заповiдь Божа забороняє поклонятися iншим богам-iдолам, а не iстинному Богу. Ми - православнi християни - поклоняємося через шанування iкон iстинному Богу, Господу нашому Iсусу Христу, а не iдолу. Для нас Христос Спаситель - iстинний Бог, а не iдол. Святкуючи перемогу над древнiми iконоборцями, ми святкуємо також i перемогу над сучасними єретиками, якi не шанують iкон. Той, хто сьогоднi вiрує в Господа нашого Iсуса Христа i не шанує Його iкон, той не знає нi правдивого християнського православного вiровчення, нi iсторiї боротьби св. Церкви з єресями. У боротьбi з iконоборством Церква вiдстояла своє право поклонiння iконам Христа Спасителя, Матерi Божої i святих, i цим самим вона захистила iстину Боговтiлення. Церква закликає нас: "Прийдiть, поклонiться священним образам Христа, Пречистої Його Матерi i святих i вiдкиньте злочесну вiру тих, хто лихословить".

74. Блажен, хто завше думає про Бога і з Ним Єдиним лучиться віданням своїм. Радість у Бозі кріпша од теперішнього життя; і хто здобув її, той не тільки поневажує страждання, а й за ніщо має життя своє. Любов солодша од життя, і розуміння у Бозі, від котрого родиться любов, солодше од меду. Той, хто любить, не боїться прийняти смерть за тих, кого він любить. Любов родиться од відання, відання - від душевного здоров'я; здоров'я ж душевне - це сила, що зроджується від тривалого терпіння. 75. Життя вічне - се утішення в Бозі; і хто знайшов утішення в Бозі, для того зайвим стало утішення мирське. Чи прийняв хто мудрість од Духа, - пізнає це зі самої мудрости, що в сокровенії навчає його смиренномудрія. Чи досягнув хто смиренномудрія, - пізнає з того, коли ненависним стане для нього світ і слава його. 76. Пристрасті суть спокусливі спонуки, що викликаються речами світу сього, захоплюють нас, щоб під приводом потреби задовольняли ми захцянки свої; і спонуки сі не вщухають, поки стоїть світ. Але людина, сподобившись Божественної благодаті, узрівши щось вище од тілесного, возбраняє спокусливим спонукам входити до серця її, тому що замість них запанувало в ній вже щось ліпше, тож до серця її не наближаються ані порухи лукавого, ані породжувані бажання від них. І не через те, що в людині щезли пристрасті, а через те, що серце її завмерло для них, живе вже Божественним; і не тому, що людина досягла спокою через розсудливість і добрі діла свої, а тому, що в умі її немає ніякої тривоги, а свідомість її услаждається уже вищим.

9 THE SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY 1ST SUNDAY OF THE GREAT FAST

Today, on the first Sunday of Lent, we commemorate the Triumph of Orthodoxy. On this day we bring to church and carry them in procession to celebrate the restoration of the icons after the iconoclast heresy long ago. But even though the icons are highly visible, the Triumph of Orthodoxy does not only mean we can have icons. There’s a subtext to iconoclasm that we miss because we aren’t ancient Greeks or Romans. Saint Paul writes that “Christ crucified [is] to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness” (1 Corinthians 1:23). The religions of the Greeks emphasized the transcendence of God: The high, exalted, remote Deity, they believed, could not be associated with the grossness of the flesh. To them, spirit was good; matter was bad — and man was a divine spirit trapped in a lowly material world, unless he can escape through secret knowledge.

10 In the face of that belief, the first Christians proclaimed that God has become a perfectly material, fully physical human being; that he actually died; and not only did he rise bodily from the dead, He promises to raise us for eternity in bodies. Salvation doesn’t lie in an escape from matter. Instead Christians expect to live eternally, bodily, in the Resurrection. Although this pagan Greek disdain for matter and the body was alien to the Christian Gospel, it remained alive in heresies around the periphery of the Church. Finally, in the eighth century, in the wake of Islam’s impact on Christian culture, this delusion reared its head among the Christians. The iconoclasts [literally, image-breakers] asserted that since “God is spirit” (John 4:24), then He cannot be depicted using matter. Since (they said) an can only show the humanity of Christ, not His invisible divine nature, they claimed icons of Christ improperly divided Jesus the man from Christ our God. And, scandalized by Christian veneration of icons, the iconoclasts called it the same as worship of pagan idols. Gaining the ear of the emperor, they arranged to have the Archbishop of Constantinople replaced by one of their own, and began persecuting the Orthodox who venerated images, even putting them to death. The history of the present feast is that of the restoration of icons to the Church. In answering the iconoclasts’ objections, the holy Fathers remind us that the holy, transcendent God has become a Man; “He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8). He saves us by participating fully in our visible, material nature — uniting it to Himself in His triumph over death, in His ascension and return to His own divine glory and throne, in His eternal life, divine nature, holiness and righteousness. Saint Gregory the Theologian famously says, “That which was not assumed is not healed; but that which is united to God is saved.” Christ can be depicted in matter — in paint on wood, in mosaics in stone, on metal bells and vessels — precisely because ever since Gabriel’s annunciation, “Hail, full of grace,” God the Word is forevermore a material, human Person. He saves us on an entirely material Cross of

11 wood, shedding real blood; He heals and sanctifies us with oil, water, the bodies of the saints, and above all with His own Body and Blood. God is Spirit, and Christ our God is also human. He is impassible — but in His incarnation, He’s no stranger to pain or tribulation. In Him the human and divine natures are united “without mingling, change, division, or separation,” as the Fathers have said. In the light of this fearful divine Mystery, no Orthodox Christian is tempted to worship the mere wood or paint of an icon: as Saint Basil wrote, when we venerate Christ or the saints in an icon, the honor we show passes on to the one the image represents. Jesus Christ is the God who gets His hands dirty. That still scandalizes people who prefer a deity they can keep on a pedestal. We live in a culture that — like the ancient Greeks — prefers to be merely a fan of an impersonal god that we can compartmentalize, ignore, and salute when appropriate. The message of the restoration of the icons is that this conveniently uninvolved deity of civil religion is a false god. Ironically, the god that cannot be depicted in images is an idol invented by the minds of men. But the living God – the I AM whose bodily resurrection we will celebrate in a few weeks, is “that which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled” (1 John 1:1) This God, who saves the world by His material Incarnation, is fittingly depicted using matter. This is the Orthodoxy that triumphs today.

17 THE DIVINE LITURGY

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS ISSUE THE LITURGY OF THE FAITHFUL The antiminsos which means “in place of the table” is a special cloth depicting the burial of our Savior that is blessed and signed by the bishop for the performance of the Liturgy. It recalls the time of the persecution of Christians when the Church had no permanent abode and could not carry the Holy Table from place to place. Instead, the antiminsos was taken to the place were the Liturgy was to be performed. Without it the Liturgy cannot be performed, so the priest is responsible for the preservation of the antiminsos if something happens to the church. This third part of the Liturgy is the Liturgy of the Faithful. It is so called because only the faithful (those already baptized) are allowed to be present during its celebration. It can be divided into the following sections: 1) the transferring of the honorable Gifts from the Table of Preparation to the Holy Table, 2) the preparation of the faithful for the sacrifice of the Gifts, 3) the sacrifice (changing) of the Gifts, 4) the preparation of the faithful for Communion, 5) Communion, and 6) the thanksgiving after Communion and the Dismissal. Two short litanies are proclaimed after the catechumens are told to depart from the church: Deacon: All catechumens, depart. Depart, catechumens. All that are catechumens, depart. Let no catechumen remain. Let us, the faithful, again and again in peace, pray unto the Lord. Choir: Lord, have mercy. Deacon: Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O God, by Thy grace. Choir: Lord, have mercy.

18 Deacon: Wisdom! Priest: For unto Thee are due all glory, honor, and worship: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Choir: Amen. Deacon: Again and again in peace let us pray unto the Lord. Choir: Lord, have mercy. Deacon: Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O God, by Thy grace. Choir: Lord, have mercy. Deacon: Wisdom! Priest: That guarded always by Thy might we may send up glory unto Thee: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Choir: Amen. During these litanies the priest prays: “Again and oftimes we fall down before Thee and pray unto Thee, O Good One and Lover of mankind, that looking down upon our supplication Thou wouldst cleanse our souls and bodies from all defilement of flesh and spirit; and grant us to stand blameless and uncondemned before Thy holy altar. Grant also to those who pray with us, O God, growth in life and faith and spiritual understanding. Grant them always to worship Thee blamelessly with fear and love, and to partake without condemnation of Thy Holy Mysteries and grant that they may be accounted worthy of Thy Heavenly Kingdom.” Then the Cherubic Hymn is chanted. This hymn reminds the faithful that they have now left behind every thought of daily life: offering themselves as a likeness of the Cherubim. They are found close to God in Heaven, and, together with the angels, sing the thrice-holy hymn of praise to God. During the

19 Cherubic Hymn, the deacon performs a censing. The priest in private prayers asks the Lord to purify his soul and heart from an evil conscience and, by the power of the Holy Spirit to make him worthy to offer to God the Gifts which have been offered. Then the priest and the deacon quietly say the words of the Cherubic Hymn thrice; then both proceed to the Table of Preparation to transfer the precious Gifts to the Holy Table. This procession is call the Great Entry. Cherubic Hymn Choir: Let us who mystically represent the Cherubim and chant the thrice-holy hymn unto the life-giving Trinity, now lay aside all earthly cares. The words of the original Greek for upborne mean literally, “borne aloft as on spears.” This refers to an ancient practice in which a nation desiring, to glorify its king would seat him upon their shields, and raising him up, would carry him before the army and through the city streets. The shields were held up on spears, so it seemed that the triumphant leader was carried by spears. The deacon, with the aer (the large veil) on his left shoulder, carries the diskos on his head, while the priest carries the in his hands. Leaving the altar by the north door (while the choir chants “Let us lay aside all earthly cares ...”), they come to a stop on the ambo, facing the people. They commemorate the bishops, the local ruling bishop, the clergy, monastics, the founders of the church and the Orthodox Christians who are present. They then turn and enter the altar through the Royal Doors, place the precious Gifts on the Holy Table, on the opened antiminsos, and cover them with the aer. Priest: All Orthodox Hierarchs, the priestly and monastic orders and the clergy of this holy church, may the Lord God remember in His Kingdom, always, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. - Our God-Beloved and God-Protected country Canada, its Government, armed forces, and its people, may the Lord God remember in His Kingdom, always, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. - The honourable and ever-memorable founders, benefactors, and parishioners of this holy temple, may the Lord God remember in His Kingdom, always, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. - You and all Orthodox Christians, may the Lord God remember in His Kingdom, always, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Choir: Amen. That we may receive the King of all who comes invisibly upborne by the angelic hosts. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! The faithful stand during this time with bowed heads and pray that the Lord remember them and all those close to them in His Kingdom. After the priest says the words “and all of you Orthodox Christians, may the Lord God remember in His Kingdom,” the people reply softly, “And may the Lord God remember thy priesthood in His Kingdom, always, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.”

ON HELPING TO QUENCH ANGER St. John of Kronstadt

A man who is wrathful with us is a sick man; we must apply a plaster to his heart - love; we must treat him kindly, speak to him gently, lovingly. And if there is not deeply-rooted malice against us within him, but only a temporary fit of anger, you will see how his heart, or his malice, will melt away through your kindness and love - how good will conquer evil. A Christian must always be kind, gracious, and wise in order to conquer evil by good.

ON THE POWER OF LOVE St. Nikolai Velimirovich A scholar attracts by his knowledge, a wealthy man by riches, a handsome man by beauty, an artist by his skill. Each of these attracts a limited number of individuals. Only love attracts all human beings. The attraction of love is unlimited. And educated or uneducated, rich or poor, skilled or unskilled, beautiful or ugly, healthy or sick, and young or old - all want to be loved. Christ spread His love on everyone, and lovingly drew all to Himself. With His great love he encompassed even the dead, long decomposed and forgotten by men.

ON THREE DEGREES OF EATING St. Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain According to St. Gregory the Sinaite there are three degrees in eating: temperance, sufficiency, and satiety. Temperance is when someone wants to eat some more food but abstains, rising from the table still somewhat hungry. Sufficiency is when someone eats

23 what is needed and sufficient for normal nourishment. Satiety is when someone eats more than enough and is more than satisfied. Now if you cannot keep the first two degrees and you proceed to the third, then, at least, do not become a glutton, remembering the words of the Lord, `Woe to you that are full now, for you shall hunger' (Lk. 6:25). Remember also that rich man who ate in this present life sumptuously every day, but who was deprived of the desired bosom of Abraham in the next life, simply because of this sumptuous eating.

A WORD ABOUT FASTING St. John Chrysostom It is necessary most of all for one who is fasting to curb anger, to accustom himself to meek- ness and condescension, to have a contrite heart, to repulse impure thoughts and desires, to examine his conscience, to put his mind to the test and to verify what good has been done by us in this or any other week, and which deficiency we have corrected in ourselves in the present week.

WHY DOES THE PRIEST CENSE US? During the services, the priest censes many things in church. He also censes the people. Why does he cense the people? As clouds of smoke from the burning incense rise up, we are reminded that we were created in the “image and likeness of God.” It is this image in us that the priest censes. Just as he censes the icons of the saints, he censes each of us. We are called to be saints. When we turn to God and tell Him we are sorry for our sins, He visits us and blesses us. He encourages us to grow and become more like Himself who is both holy and good. When the priest censes us, here minds us to keep the divine image in us pure and God- like.

24 ABOUT SAINT EPHREM’S PRAYER The famous lenten prayer of Saint summarizes our entire struggle during the forty day fast – that of turning from vice to virtue, sin to holiness, and self-love to love of God and neighbor. This powerful prayer is said every day of , except on Saturdays and Sundays. It should be part of our morning and evening prayers, but may also be said at any other time throughout the day – especially in time of temptation.

THE PRAYER OF SAINT EPHREM O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, faint-heartedness, lust of power. and idle talk. () But grant rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to thy servant. (Prostration) Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother; for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen. (Prostration) O God, cleanse Thou me a sinner. (12 times, with as many bows, and then again the whole prayer from the beginning throughout, and after that one great prostration) Note: If one cannot make , then make bows, or simply the sign of the Cross.

The Sacrament of Confession is one of reconciliation with God, bringing about not only a clearing of the conscience through the remission of sins, but also a healing of the soul through our recommitment to Christ. This Sacrament should therefore be received by all Orthodox Christians during each of the fasting seasons, including Great Lent. For those who wish to receive Holy

25 Communion, the Sacrament of Confession is indispensable and absolutely necessary to maintaining our spiritual health and well being. Fr. Gregory is available to hear confessions following Vespers and before the Liturgy or at any other time by appointment.

Memorial Saturdays On Saturdays during the Great Fast we are especially called to remember those who have departed this life before us in the hope of the resurrection to eternal life. Memorial services are being offered at 9:30am during which the names of our departed family members and friends are commemorated. If you have not yet submitted a list for commemoration, please see Fr. Gregory.

The Saturday Evening Service is the first service of the Resurrection. The Divine Liturgy on the following morning is the second service. Sunday begins on the evening before, just as in the Bible, “there was an evening and morning the first day.” Therefore, the Vespers on Saturday evening is not only for those who are preparing to receive Holy Communion but also for all the faithful. As Orthodox Christians we know that the joy of celebrating the Resurrection should not be regulated to simply the Divine Liturgy. Rather we do well to participate in both of these services, as the righteous ones of the Old and New Testament times worshipped in the evening and morning.

CONFESSION OF FAITH FROM THE SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY As the prophets beheld, as the Apostles have taught, as the Church has received, as the teachers have dogmatized, as the Universe has agreed, as Grace has shown forth, as Truth has revealed, as falsehood has been dissolved, as Wisdom has presented, as Christ Awarded, thus we declare, thus we assert, thus we preach Christ our true God, and honor His Saints in words, in writings, in thoughts, in sacrifices, in churches, in Holy Icons; on the one hand worshipping and reverencing Christ as God and Lord; and on the other hand honoring as true servants of the same Lord of all and accordingly offering them veneration. This is the Faith of the Apostles, this is the Faith of the Fathers, this is the Faith of the Orthodox, this is the Faith which has established the Universe.
