I-D Celebrates 40Th Anniversary October 28, 2020 i-D CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY i-D celebrates its milestone birthday with a special edition of the magazine, featuring seven cover stars and an archive portfolio celebrating i-D over the decades; as well as a limited edition hardback version of the magazine I-D’s “The 40th Anniversary Issue” is available on global newsstands today and online at i-dstore.co Images Available Here (LONDON, UK - 28th, OCTOBER, 2020) - Today, global fashion publisher i-D celebrates its 40th anniversary with the release of a special edition of the magazine. “The 40th Anniversary Issue” features seven different covers which bring together generations of i-D cover stars, as well as a limited edition hardback version of the magazine featuring artwork by legendary New York graffiti artist Futura 2000. Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director Alastair McKimm, the magazine’s latest edition focuses on the key themes which embody i-D's DNA, that of legacy, mentorship and family. From cover stars Kendrick Lamar and his mentee Baby Keem; to Björk and Arca; Kristen and Lily McMenamy; Ned Sims photographed by his father, David Sims; and i-D’s Contributing Editor Paloma Elsesser and her younger siblings Sage and Ama. In addition, long-time i-D contributors Willy Vanderperre and Olivier Rizzo have recreated one of i-D’s most memorable covers, from The Inspiration Issue, February 2001 with their current muses Daan Duez and Ilona Desmet, and i-D digs into its archive with a previously unpublished cover from Nigel Schafran’s Teenage Precinct Shoppers series in collaboration with Melanie Ward, originally published in i-D in 1990. Alongside the cover stories, the issue includes an 65 page special archive portfolio, which explores i-D’s history through the decades. With i-D I had found a publication that spoke my language. Street culture, fashion, music, art all rolled into one. Over my 20 year career at i-D I went from assistant to stylist to Fashion Editor to Fashion Director to Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director. I am truly humbled by this position now on the eve of i-D’s 40th anniversary,” said i-D’s Editor in Chief and Creative Director Alastair McKimm. “We’ve been working on this issue all year. My first phone call at the start of 2020 was to i-D’s founders, Terry and Tricia Jones. I didn’t have a specific idea but I thought they might if I planted the seed. What came to fruition is Terry’s 40 Winks portfolio, a truly iconic journey through i-D’s 40 year history that inspired the entire archive section of the issue. I’m so proud of the work we have created this year during such a tumultuous time in world history. Huge thanks and so much love to my lean, mean, creativity machine of a team and the countless contributors that make this very special issue so very special.” Launched in 1980 By Founder Terry Jones, i-D has since grown from a hand-stapled zine with DIY roots into a leading source for fashion inspiration, capturing the spirit, the rebelliousness, the style and the signature winks of some of the greatest names in culture over the past 40 years. • The Growing Relationship Between Brands and the Entertainment World Is a Big Theme Once Again at Cannes
The growing relationship between brands and the entertainment world is a big theme once again at Cannes. The debate is focused on several growing issues for brands in this space – including the integration of social media and device technology at live events, built through partnerships with the likes of Snapchat and Twitter, and the distribution of branded entertainment through deals with big media companies. Undoubtedly the biggest issue, however, is the need for brands to adapt to a changing world where they are part of a larger entertainment ecosystem. This requires some brave thinking about their brand and its role, together with the ability to connect with and, ultimately, move people in some way. This concern emerged during the Lions Entertainment session ‘What’s Next in the World of Brands and Entertainment?” The point made most forcibly by Jonny Sabbath, of Anheusher- Busch InBev. He stressed the need for those in the brand world to “think like a marketer, act like a producer. As marketers we have to act more like entertainment producers, do less interrupting and more attracting.” Sabbath raised what for me should be a significant focus for brands: bringing something that’s unique, entertaining, or useful to your audience. He cited one of his own projects, the Beerland show on Vice Media’s Viceland that follows craft brewer Meg Gill on a journey to meet home-brewers, to make his point that brands are now engaging with audiences by buying or creating TV shows and then developing their advertising around this entertainment. This requires a different approach for brands, putting themselves more in the role of producer and asking whether people will want to actively engage with the content and whether the product or service has the permission to have a conversation with people at that time, and in that space.

  • VIRTUE Brings Back Small Talk with the Launch of Chit Chat
VIRTUE brings back small talk with the launch of Chit Chat Right in time for virtual Christmas office celebrations this Slack application allows companies to enable small talk straight from people’s web browsers at the home office. Check out the video HERE 16 December, Amsterdam - Today VIRTUE, the creative agency by VICE, launches Chit Chat, a new app for Slack users that mimics the coincidence of coffee machine conversations by connecting people to a randomly selected colleague from around the company to enjoy a few minutes of chatting. Especially now that companies are looking at alternative ways for their annual Christmas celebrations, this tool comes at the perfect time. Most of us have managed to transfer to digital workflows. However, the mostly practical, digital work collaboration doesn’t guarantee human connection. The digital workflow means we’re missing out on the light-hearted watercooler or coffee machine chit chat that drives human connection, team building and office culture. It also means that we are missing out on randomly bumping into your colleagues at this year's annual Christmas celebration. But also after the holiday season, Chit Chat enables staff to connect with people they generally might not talk to within the company at a local and global level, unlocking the collective knowledge potential, fuelling new ideas and optimisations. The app aims to increase bonding of teams and colleagues as seeing colleagues in their home environment drives empathy and understanding amongst each other. Not only in times of COVID-19 where lots of people are working from home, but also to improve connections with colleagues across different countries in the future.

Rhodes Editorial board: Kelly Basilio, Donna Campbell, Claire Perkins, Christopher Sharrett and Yannis Tzioumakis ReFocus is a series of contemporary methodological and theoretical approaches to the interdisciplinary analyses and interpretations of neglected American directors, from the once- famous to the ignored, in direct relationship to American culture—its myths, values, and historical precepts. The series ignores no director who created a historical space—either in or out of the studio system—beginning from the origins of American cinema and up to the present. These directors produced film titles that appear in university film history and genre courses across international boundaries, and their work is often seen on television or available to download or purchase, but each suffers from a form of “canon envy”; directors such as these, among other important figures in the general history of American cinema, are underrepresented in the critical dialogue, yet each has created American narratives, works of film art, that warrant attention. ReFocus brings these American film directors to a new audience of scholars and general readers of both American and Film Studies. Titles in the series include: ReFocus: The Films of Preston Sturges Edited by Jeff Jaeckle and Sarah Kozloff ReFocus: The Films of Delmer Daves Edited by Matthew Carter and Andrew Nelson ReFocus: The Films of Amy Heckerling Edited by Frances Smith and Timothy Shary ReFocus: The Films of Budd Boetticher Edited by Gary D.
