1 FORWARD Is there anything better than the start of the golf season? After the long Canadian winter, we are all in anticipation of warmer weather, longer days and sunshine. As golfers, we also create our own internal images of long drives that find the middle of the fairway, precision approaches that stop feet from the pin, and the putts that find the center of the cup. And now the time is here to enjoy your Home Club and make those dreams a reality. To enhance that reality, your management team has been hard at work over the last few months to ensure your membership experience at Eagle Creek G.C continues to improve. The Member events at Eagle Creek G.C continue to evolve. Much of the work over the winter months was focused on improving our event schedule. The Captains Committee has been pivotal in this process, working to make our Member events the best possible experience. We feel that we have a good balance of competitive and social events that will encourage participation from Members of every level of playing ability. To see the full schedule of events, visit the Club calendar at http://eaglecreek.clublink.ca and start planning your season. If there is a junior in your family, help them get into the greatest game in the world through our various clinics and camps. Our team will be offering Junior camps and Clublinksters again this season. Ask for details in the golf shop or our website. If you are thinking about a summer vacation, please consider Rocky Crest Golf Resort and Sherwood Inn in Muskoka or Le Maitre de Mont-Tremblant and its partner hotel, Fairmont Tremblant, in Quebec. Remember, ClubLink Members get preferred pricing! But don’t stay away too long! We need our Members to participate in the race for the ClubLink Cup. The ClubLink Cup is a season-long competition in which Clubs accumulate points at each qualifying ClubLink Member championship. Such events include the Men’s and Ladies’ Interclub Championship, the Tournament of Champions, Glencairn 27-hole Pro-Am, Men’s Night Championship, TaylorMade-adidas Junior Interclub and the Generations Cup. Please take the time to review the details of the handbook. If you have questions, feel free to ask any of our golf shop staff. Thanks again for choosing Eagle Creek G.C as your Home Club. We are always looking to improve and provide you with the best possible experience every day. Sincerely,

Ryan Little Director of Operations

Please respect their role and cooperate with their efforts to ensure an enjoyable golf experience for all.

3.2.9 Practice Facility Always check in with the golf shop prior to using the practice facilities. Please obey posted signage and stay within the space allocated and only hit in the direction of the targets provided.

3.2.10 Tee-it Forward By golfing from tees not suited to their driving distance, many amateur golfers end up playing yardages that, if compared proportionately, would intimidate the best players in the world. If you’re an average male mid-handicapper playing from 6,700 yards, that’s like a PGA TOUR pro playing from 8,100 yards! The TEE IT FORWARD initiative is aimed at helping golfers have the best possible experience on the golf course by playing from the set of tees best suited to their abilities, determined by their average driving distance. Initiated by the USGA, PGA of America, and the PGA of Canada, TEE IT FORWARD is endorsed by ClubLink because of its many benefits:  Faster rounds, improved pace of play  Experiencing the course at the same relative proportions a PGA TOUR or LPGA player would  Using mid-irons for approach shots instead of hybrids and long irons  Better and more realistic scoring  Fewer lost balls, less time spent looking for them  Fewer shots, less frustration  Overall increased enjoyment of the game The following are TEE IT FORWARD guidelines for selecting tees based on a golfer’s average driving distance. On each course you play, choose the most appropriate tee from those available.

6.1.3.3 Senior Men’s Best 1 of 2 rounds with Stableford format and further subject to the team member’s age requirements as follows: The Senior Intersectional Team must have three (3) players in the 55 to 64 year bracket, three (3) players in the 65 and older bracket and four (4) wildcard players (any age provided they are Seniors). The two alternates must be a minimum of 60 years of age. The competitors must be in their age group on the day of the event.

6.1.3.4 Senior Women’s Best 2 of 3 rounds with Stableford format and further subject to the team member’s age requirements as follows: The Senior Women's Intersectional team consists of seven (7) players plus one alternate. All players must be at least 50 years of age. Of these, at least two (2) players must be between 55 and 64 years of age, and at least one (1) player must be a minimum of 65 years of age. The alternate must be at least 50 years of age. The competitors must be in their age group on the day of the event.

6.2 Interclub Team Eagle Creek competes in a team competition against other ClubLink clubs. Eagle Creek fields Men’s and Women’s interclub teams. The men’s and women’s competitions are separate.

6.2.1 Competition Format The Interclub competition is comprised of two matches against the other Ottawa and Montreal region ClubLink clubs (Kanata, Greyhawk, Hautes Plaines from Ottawa, Le Maitre, Val des Lacs, Rosemere (formerly Fontainbleau), Islesmere from Montreal) followed by a ClubLink wide finals competition. The regional matches are held in the summer; usually one in July and one in August. Typically, one match is held at an Ottawa region club and the other at a Montreal region club. The 2-day finals for both the men’s and women’s competitions are historically held in Muskoka in September on a Sunday/Monday.

6.2.1.1 Men’s Interclub The men’s team is comprised of 6 players: four qualifying members plus the Club Captain and the Director of Operations. During the matches, the 6 player team is divided into 3 groups of 2 players. Each 2-player team plays a two-person net best ball format using Stableford scoring. The sum of the scores from the 3 two player teams comprise the overall team’s total score. In the men’s competition, the winning club from the region advances to the Premier finals while the other three clubs advance to the consolation finals.

Eagle Creek Golf Club ClubLink – One Membership, More Golf Member Handbook 2019 26

6.2.1.2 Women’s Interclub The women’s team is comprised of 3 qualifying members plus the Ladies Club Captain. Format of play: Each Club will divide its four players into two separate twosomes. From each club one twosome will play as a two-person net better ball using 80 per cent of handicap. The other twosome will play in a handicapped scramble. Please note that the player with the lowest handicap factor is not eligible to play in the scramble format. Maximum score on each hole for will be net double bogey for both the best ball, and scramble. The aggregate of the two team placing points is the team total for the day. This format will be used both for the cluster play-downs and the Muskoka finals. Handicapped Scramble Handicap Calculation – the player within the scramble pair with the lowest handicap will receive 35% of their handicap. The remaining player will receive 15% of their handicap. The combination of the two percentages would be the team handicap for the scramble. Event Scoring Format for both the Best Ball and Scramble (placing for points): Based on a field of eight (as in the Ottawa/Montreal regional matches), the first place twosome in each of the best ball and scramble formats will get 8 points, the second place teams 7 points and so on down to the 8th place teams which will get 1 point. The club’s team score is the total to their two twosome scores. If there are ties – the total tied points are divided by the number of teams tied for the same spot. Each team then receives that equal amount. E.g. – there is a tie for fourth (5 points). The total number of points is 9 (5 points for 4th, and 4 points for 5th), and 2 teams are tied. 9 / 2 = 4.5 each tied team would then receive 4.5 points. After the final cluster event the top 4 teams from our 8 team cluster will be seeded into the Championship Finals. The remaining teams will play in the Consolation Finals.

6.2.2 Dates and Locations The dates and locations for the year’s Interclub regional competitions will be listed in the qualifier event sign-up sheets.

6.2.3 Transportation to the Events Transportation to and from the events is the responsibility of the team members.

6.2.4 Meals at Events At the regional events, the Host club provides a post-match meal. In some cases, breakfast prior to the match may be provided. In the Muskokas, meals are provided before and after competition on both days.

6.2.5 Accommodations at the Finals Accommodation is included at one of the Muskoka resorts (Rocky Crest Resort or Sherwood Inn) on the night between the first and second day of competition.

Eagle Creek Golf Club ClubLink – One Membership, More Golf Member Handbook 2019 27

6.2.6 Interclub Team Qualification Qualification for the Interclub teams takes place coincidentally with the Intersectional team qualification. As with the Intersectional team, qualification is based on the best 2 of 3 rounds using Stableford scoring. Prior to qualifying, each player should ensure that they are prepared to play both NCA/Quebec events and the Muskoka tournament. In the event that a qualified player cannot attend one of the events, an alternate will take their place. If the captain cannot play, the assistant captain is the substitute. If one of the other team members is unable to play, an alternate from the qualifier is the substitute. Men’s Qualification for the 4 open positions on the men’s team is:  The top net participant from the first three qualifying rounds.  The player with the highest gross two round score. Three alternate positions are filled by the 2nd place net finisher on each day. In the event that one the qualifiers cannot play, he will be replaced by the 2nd place finisher on that day. Women’s Qualification for the 3 open positions on the women’s team is:  The top three players taking the 2 best of 4 qualifying rounds. 6.3 Capital Cup The Capital Cup is a friendly challenge among the women of local Club Link Golf Clubs - featuring the women of Eagle Creek, Greyhawk, Hautes Plaines, and Kanata. The primary goal is participation and hanging out with our fellow ClubLinkers, while enjoying a bit of team competition (based on net scoring). Eagle Creek's Capital Cup Team will made up of 20 players, plus spares, and the team will be selected by random draw from those expressing interest to play through the event’s sign-up sheet. Players of all calibers are encouraged to sign up! An up-to-date Golf Canada Index will be required - so remember to update your records regularly.

7 HANDICAP INFORMATION

7.1 What is a Golf Handicap? A golf handicap is measure of a player’s scoring potential. It is the central means by which players of different abilities can compete against one another. The handicap IS NOT one’s average score. One should shoot their handicap only about 25% of the time. It is nominally based on the best 10 of the last 20 rounds. A player’s handicap will go up or down as the player’s game changes. The handicap calculation disregards high scores that bear little relation to the player’s potential ability. It is continuous from one playing season or year to the next. The handicap is useful for all forms of play.

7.2 Who Should Keep a Handicap? All players regardless of ability may keep a handicap. Players intending on participating in net competitions must keep a handicap.

7.3 Reasons for Keeping a Handicap  Enables fairly contested Net events. A player must have a verified RCGA handicap in order to compete in the many handicapped events at Eagle Creek and elsewhere.  Provides a metric by which a player can monitor his/her improvement.  Generates a personalized record of the golf season.

7.4 Handicap Index vs. Course Handicap The Handicap Index (also called Handicap Factor) is the single universal number that defines the player’s ability. It is a fractional number (e.g. 14.3). The course handicap is specific to the course and tee box played during a round. It is a non-fractional number computed from the Handicap index, the course rating and slope for the selected tees. A player’s net score is generally obtained by subtract the player’s course handicap from their gross score. The Golf Canada Score Center provides an easy to use course handicap calculator. One simply needs to enter their index and select the course and tee.

7.5 Where to Enter Scores Scores should be entered using the Golf Canada Score Center handicap system. Golf Canada membership is included in your Clublink membership. Each player should have an account. Eagle Creek includes a computer in the pro-shop for entering scores but scores can be entered from home computers or mobile devices. If you do not have an account, contact [email protected] to obtain your login name and password.

Eagle Creek Golf Club ClubLink – One Membership, More Golf Member Handbook 2019 29

7.6 How to Enter Scores To enter scores, login to the Golf Canada Score Center through http://golfcanada.ca/members/login/. Each score can be entered as a final 9 or 18 hole score or hole-by-hole. For each score entered, select the date, course and tee played, tournament designation if applicable and the score. If entering the final score, the score must be properly adjusted for Equitable Stroke Control (see section 7.8 for details on ESC). A benefit to entering scores hole-by-hole is that Score Center applies the ESC to your hole scores automatically. In this case, you may simply enter your unadjusted hole scores.

7.7 What Scores to Enter for Handicap Purposes Each player must enter ALL scores subject to the guidelines below.

Friendly games: Score should be entered as a handicap score using Golf Canada Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). Tournament Play: Score should be entered in the normal manner, but toggle “T” for tournament. “T” scores include Intersectional & Interclub events, selection trials, Club Championships and club events such as Match Play, 4 BBB, Openings, Closings, Mixed (assuming you play your own ball) and outside the club events including Clublink and OVGA competitions. If in doubt, check with the Professional Staff or the Handicap Committee. Match Play: Score should be entered using ESC, utilizing the procedures below:  If a hole is not finished (ball in pocket), record ESC maximum.  If opponent wins hole and you don’t finish putting, record your MOST LIKELY score. It is recognized that “friendly games” may also involve unfinished or ball-in-pocket holes. These situations should be scored in the same manner as described above using your best judgement. Women’s/Men’s Night: Score should be entered using ESC – either 9 hole or 18 hole, but NOT as a “T” score. Scores that should not be entered for handicap purposes:  Scrambles, Alternate Shots, Shambles, etc.  A round played alone 7.8 Active Season In the Ontario/Quebec Region, the active season extends from April 15 to Oct. 31. During this period, all rounds played in this region can be posted. Rounds played out of season in Ontario are not to be posted.

Eagle Creek Golf Club ClubLink – One Membership, More Golf Member Handbook 2019 30

If you play outside of your provincial handicap season somewhere else where golf is in season (e.g., our Florida Region), the scores for those rounds must also be posted.

7.9 Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) Basics Use the following table to correctly apply ESC to your round’s score. To apply ESC correctly, you must know your handicap for the course and tee played (see section 7.4). The course handicap is NOT your index.

Course Handicap Score Adjustment 9 or under Max 2 strokes over par 10-19 Max 7 strokes 20-29 Max 8 strokes 30-39 Max 9 strokes 40+ Max 10 strokes

7.10 Common Mistakes or Omissions  Scores entered late or possibly not at all  Tournament rounds not identified by “T” designation  Inaccurate tee selection while entering scores  Inaccurate dates selected for rounds played  ESC not used, or used incorrectly (i.e. gross score entered without ESC adjustment)

7.11 Tips for Entering Scores  Get into the habit of adjusting your gross score for ESC at the completion of each round.  Try to post your scores within 6 days, but definitely prior to the next event where handicaps will be used.  Be particularly careful to ensure correct tees and proper date.  Periodically, review your scoring record and correct any omissions, especially of “T” designations.  Consider entering your score using the computer in the Pro Shop rather than waiting to do it at home.  If you make an entry mistake there is an edit function, or, ask the Professional Staff for assistance!

7.12 Eagle Creek Handicap Committee: Each Golf Club has a responsibility to ensure the proper utilization of the Golf Canada Handicap System. The Eagle Creek Handicap Committee was created to fulfill that responsibility. The Committee’s duties include:  Educating the members on all procedures to obtain a Handicap Factor.  Encouraging members to use the system.  Facilitating a peer review to verify that handicap factors are valid.  On occasion, issuing penalties and/or adjusting inaccurate Handicap Factors. The Handicap Committee works closely with the Club Captains and the Professional Staff.
