Dr. Cretser was my undergraduate advisor, my co-author for my first presented research and a wonderful sounding board for all of my ideas and concerns. Dr. Danico saw potential in me that I did not see in myself, and taught me the importance of believing in myself and not giving up on my dream. She also helped me understand the value of diversity, the ability to look beyond my limited experience, a perspective that is key to research based on social inequality. I would also like to offer a thank you to my colleagues and fellow graduate students in the sociology department at UCR. I will cherish their friendships always. vi DEDICATION Dedicated to my family (you know who you are). vii ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful: Motherhood, Occupational Prestige and the Roles of Women in Hollywood Films of the 1940s and 1950s by Tracey Kim Hoover Doctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in Sociology University of California, Riverside, August 2010 Dr. Toby Miller, Co-Chairperson Dr. Adalberto Aguirre, Co-Chairperson Cultural stereotypes and controlling images have been embedded in U.S. cinema, especially since the end of the Second World War. Women have been disempowered and marginalized by these images. It is important to explore the existence and prevalence of these images in order to understand the impact this medium has on women‘s occupational choices. It is particularly important to study the cultural expectations of motherhood for women, and the influence post-World War II films has had on occupational gender role expectations A feminist content analysis of the themes present in 104 U.S. films from the years 1939 to 1959, along with 11 remade versions (1978 to 2008) of films in the sample was conducted as a means to find evidence in support of intersectional feminist theory‘s position in regard to female representation in film, and the extent to which this representation has changed over time. The review of the 1,150 lead characters in the 115 films was done through the use of a content review sheet which was developed by the researcher through the use of prior research and previously used review sheets in studies viii using similar research designs. The analysis revealed themes and patterns, including but not limited to, the idea that careers should be secondary to romantic and marital relationships in women‘s lives; women appear in significantly fewer numbers than men in primary roles; women of color were portrayed characters who served white women; women are portrayed more often as mothers during the 1950s than the 1940s. In addition, non-white women are not adequately represented in the films. Title: Girlhood Reimagined: Representations of Girlhood in the Films of Hayao Miyazaki. Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________ Bradley Boovy Despite the now common usage of the term “girl”, there has been little call for pause and deeper analysis into what we actually mean when we use this term. In particular, animated film provides a wide scope of media texts that claim to focus on girlhood; but how do we in fact know girlhood? How is girlhood constructed? With these questions in mind, I use feminist textual analysis to examine three films— Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), and Princess Mononoke (1997)—by acclaimed Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki in which girl characters and girlhood play prominently into the film's construction as a whole. In particular, I examine how Miyazaki constructs girlhood through his storylines and characters and how these characters (i.e. girls) are then positioned in relation to three specific aspects of their representation: their use of clothing, their relationships to other characters, and their freedom of movement relative to other characters. In doing so, I deconstruct more traditionally held notions of girlhood in which girls are seen as dependent and lacking autonomy. Through Miyazaki’s work, I instead offer up a counternarrative of girlhood in which the very category of gender, and indeed “girls”, are destabilized. In doing so, I hope to provide a wider breadth of individuals the chance to see themselves represented in animated film in both significant and meaningful ways.

    BRIDGING MEDIA-SPECIFIC APPROACHES The value of feminist television criticism’s synthetic approach Amanda D. Lotz and Sharon Marie Ross Introduction Feminist study of media encompasses a variety of media forms, each of which possesses a distinct set of issues determined by the medium and how it is used, as well as by the variant theoretical and methodological traditions through which scholars have studied the medium. US feminist film and television criticism have maintained distinct methodological and theoretical emphases—yet the two areas of study are closely related. For example, feminist television studies developed from a synthesis of theoretical and methodological work in a range of fields, including feminist film criticism and theory, and remains at once connected to and distinct from feminist approaches to studying film. The commercial dominance of the US television system required that feminist television critics explore the “popular” to a degree less evident in US feminist film criticism, although feminist film critics have examined mainstream film texts with tools similar to those used by feminist television critics in other national contexts (Joanne Hollows 2000; Jacinda Read 2000; Yvonne Tasker 1993, 1998). Understanding the relationship between varied areas of feminist media scholar- ship—their necessary divergences and their commonalities—aids in developing increasingly sophisticated theory and in responding to technological, socio-cultural, and theoretical changes. The transition to digital formats and hybrid delivery systems has begun to alter traditions of both “film” and “television,” while postfeminist approaches have reinvigorated feminist media debates. Additionally, new media have established a place in popular use and academic criticism. This context makes it more crucial than ever to address the reasons for medium-specific feminist approaches as well as to consider what can be gained through shared conversations.

Ifwe rethink the problem of a specificity of women's cinema and aesthetic forms in this manner, in terms of address-­ who is making films for whom, who is looking and speaking, how, where, and to whom--then what has been seen as a rift, a division, an ideological split within feminist film culture between theory and practice, or between formalism and activism, may appear to be the very strength, the drive and productive heterogeneity of feminism. 1 It's difficult to believe that after over 30 years of feminist theory "breaking the glass ceiling" is still a term often heard from women professionals.     Feminist Film Theory and Pretty Woman, by Mari Ruti. Bloomsbury Academic, 2016, 216 pages. Alice Guilluy Over the last decade, scholarly interest in the contemporary romantic comedy (or “rom- com”) has grown significantly. A central focal point in the recent literature has been to interrogate the genre’s much-maligned reputation (Deleyto), and to highlight the sexist undertones in its usual dismissals as “trite or lightweight” (Abbott and Jermyn 2). A number of works have sought to rehabilitate the genre by tracing its lineage back to the more prestigious screwball comedies of the 1930s and 1940s (Jeffers McDonald; Grindon). Significant attention has also been paid to the representation of gender in contemporary rom-coms, and its close connection to postfeminism (Ferriss and Young; Negra; Radner; Schreiber). Within this scholarship, Pretty Woman (Gary Marshall, 1990) is often considered, along with When Harry Met Sally (Rob Reiner, 1989), to be a “format-defining” text of the genre’s contemporary cycle (Radner, Neo-Feminist Cinema 26). Given the contribution of both Pretty Woman and its director to the rom-com canon, it is somewhat surprising that neither has received more critical attention. Mari Ruti’s Feminist Film Theory and Pretty Woman works to fill this gap, providing the first book-length examination of Gary Marshall’s film. From the start, Ruti also highlights the double standard to which rom-coms are held: “there is something questionable about our society’s routine disparagement of romantic comedies—a genre affiliated with women and femininity specifically” (2). Indeed, Ruti’s stated aim is to nuance discussions around the romantic comedy’s ideological conservatism, and to interrogate its alleged influence on female audiences.

Hence, this study aims to analyse from a feminist and intersectional perspective the oppressive character of romantic love narratives in terms of gender, race and sexuality. Abstract The film is one of the most popular sources of entertainment worldwide. Plentiful films are produced each year and the amount of spectators is also huge. Films are to be called as the mirror of society, because they portray the actual reality of the society through the cinematography. Thus, cinema plays an essential role in shaping views about, caste, creed and gender. There are many pieces of research made on the representation of women or gender in films. But, through this research, the researcher wants to analyse in- depth about the character representation of women in the Malayalam film industry how strong the so-called Mollywood constructs the strongest and stoutest women characters in Malayalam cinema in the 21st-century cinema. This study confers how women are portrayed in the Malayalam cinema in the 21st century and how bold and beautiful are the women characters in Malayalam film industry are and how they act and survive the social stigma and stereotypes in their daily life. All sample films discuss the plights and problems facing women in contemporary society and pointing fingers towards the representation of women in society. The case study method is used as the sole Methodology for research. And Feminist Film theory and theory of patriarchy applied in the theoretical framework.
