Mississippi Lake is situated in portions of Drummond, Beckwith and Mississippi Mills Townships in Lanark County, Ontario Canada. It is the last in a series of Lakes in the Mississippi Valley watershed before the Mississippi River reaches the Ottawa River, as well as one of the largest inland lakes in South Eastern Ontario. Mississippi Lake is distinctive for having one side (to the North) being part of the 3 Canadian Shield and while the other is mostly limestone. The lake is remnant of the old Champlain Sea, which flooded Eastern Ontario at the end of the last Ice Age; the former shoreline of the sea can still be traced inland from the North shore of the lake. Mississippi Lake is at an elevation of 134.4 meters above sea level. The lake perimeter is approximately 55.9 kilometers and the deepest point is 9.2 meters. Mississippi Lake supports a warm water fishery, with common species including Walleye, Pike, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass. Loons, Bald Eagles, Osprey, and Herons are known to breed inland from the Lake. The provincially significant Blanding’s Turtle is also known from Mississippi Lake.     A Short Geological History of Lanark County by MVFN member Neil Carleton This short history was inspired by the field trip on October 28, 2007, when members of the Eastern Ontario Certified Forest Owners / Eastern Ontario Model Forest explored the geology of Lanark County with Professors Allan Donaldson (Carleton University) and Donald Hogarth (University of Ottawa). It was a remarkable day that took us from the heights of Lanark Highlands, near Flower Station to the west, to the shores of the Mississippi River, at Almonte to the east. Along the way, we drove over and walked on a landscape that has been billions of years in the making. To understand the rocks that form the familiar landscape of Lanark County, imagination is needed for a journey far back in time to ocean depths, erupting volcanoes, colliding and splitting continents, and a landscape locked in ice. I like to imagine the Earth like an onion with concentric layers. Up here on the outermost layer, the Earth’s crust, the story of our planet is about brittle continental plates that move by gliding across the softer mantle layer below. For about 3 billion years, the movement of continental plates has created a continuous rearrangement of continents and oceans on our planet. This remarkable process, known as plate tectonics, is fuelled by heat deep within the planet created by radioactive decay. Driven by convection currents, the continents move about like rafts. 2.5 Billion Years Ago Arctica is the name given to the earliest recognizable North American continent. It now forms the stable central part of present North America.

    How to Engage Community in a Lake Plan A process based on Mississippi Lake Planning Project funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation Introduction Background The process of developing a lake stewardship plan relies on full involvement and participation of the community on and around the lake. The process is community-driven, and the resulting plan is a community plan. Recounting the experience of conducting a lake plan for Mississippi Lake can offer useful insights into how best to engage people in such a process. The planning process was guided by a 25- member Planning Committee, and was facilitated by French Planning Services Inc., and Watersheds Canada (formerly Centre for Sustainable Watersheds). A Technical Advisory Committee was also established, consisting primarily of government bodies whose advice and support was important to the success of the plan process. These two committees played a vital role in keeping the broad “community” informed and involved. Communications decisions and actions were directed and approved by the Planning Committee, and early in the process a Communications Strategy was developed. Communications Strategy The communication strategy provided a framework for communication activities for the preparation of the plan. The strategy identifies objectives, target audiences, key messages and approaches and tools to be considered and applied at key points throughout the process. The application of the strategy evolved as additional opportunities to communicate with the public arose. The focus of this effort was to create opportunities to communicate with as many people as possible, representing a wide array of interests throughout the watershed, during the development of the plan.
