ABSTRACT: From Charles Baudelaire’s flâneur to “man in the crowd” of Edgar Allan Poe, bypassing the “bystanders nostalgic” Fernando Pessoa’s, the art of walking throu- gh the city seizing details and constituting a poetic mosaic of urbanity fulfills a social role that unites the man/woman to the city, humanizing the concrete, building indi- vidual and collective memories. The article tries to understand the literary symbolic aspects in social representations of residents and flâneurs of Lisbon under the theore- tical ways of Pierre Bourdieu, Roger Chartier, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes and Françoise Choay, charting a roadmap of the safeguard policies on this space to identify whether there is conscious leadership or submission to the State. -
