NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

WTVP REMOTE: Exciting New Resource for Distance Learning Kids and parents will remember the past few months as the time when school moved from the classroom to the living room. The internet has become the channel of choice for distributing educational content to students. The trouble with this is not everyone has access to the internet or even a computer. This means thousands of low-income urban families and rural residents were almost completely cut off from instruction after the governor’s fi rst stay-at-home order. I have written before about how WTVP PBS bridges the “digital divide” by reaching virtually every one of the 200,000 households in a 20-county region with our broadcast signal. In the next couple of months we are planning another huge step toward an even more equitable remote learning model. We’re calling it WTVP REMOTE, a fi fth broadcast channel funded by educational entities and major donors like Sid and Flo LESLEY MATUSZAK Banwart and others and it is dedicated solely to distance learning resources. Some of WTVP President and CEO the content will be from the PBS Digital Learning Library; most will be locally produced to meet the specifi c needs of our area students. You can read more about WTVP REMOTE elsewhere in the Program Guide. As a public media organization whose purpose is to serve the needs of the community, we know this is the right thing to do. We are looking forward to the opportunity to have an even greater impact in our communities through education.

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER

We have several exciting program schedule changes to announce. For regular viewers of BBC World News, WTVP has taken steps to lessen interruptions of this program during pledge weeks. Beginning in June, BBC World News will move from our main channel to the , while retaining its original time slot of 10:30 p.m. The World Channel is carried by all area cable companies and is accessible over the air on WTVP 47.3. WTVP’s locally produced At Issue with H Wayne Wilson, which has been live for the last two months focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic, will now stay in the 8 p.m. Thursday slot followed by Illinois Adventure. This will allow the station to increase At Issue to one hour when needed without forcing viewers to remember to tune in at an earlier time for the special editions. Join us this June for Downton After Dark. Starting on Monday, June 8, WTVP will give viewers a chance to re-visit the beginning and end of the popular WILLIAM BAKER series. Episodes will air at 10 p.m. except on June 12 and 15, when they will begin WTVP Station Manager at 10:30 p.m. and Executive Producer PBS broadcast rights for Downton Abbey will expire after June. It will then move to pay cable services. Here is a chance to sit back with a brandy snifter or a cup of tea and re-enjoy the fi rst and last seasons of this wildly popular historical drama on WTVP. Changes like these are never made in a vacuum. Programming and schedule choices are based on input from members and viewers like you. Our goal is always the same: the quality programming you and your family want, when you want it. As always, we appreciate your continuing interest and support. William

NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

MORE OF WHAT YOU ASKED FOR ON WORLD AND CREATE TV

WTVP members and viewers love to offer opinions on programming. In fact, we encourage it. Members, underwriters and fi nancial supporters are the engines that makes things happen at WTVP. When we listen and take action, the station refl ects the values of the communities we serve. With this in mind, I am pleased to announce that, beginning next month, you will be able to tune in to 24/7 programming on Create TV and World. Viewers and members have been asking for this enhancement, but up until now we did not have the technology to make it happen. Now we do, thanks to generous gifts from major donors like local philanthropists Sid and Flo Banwart. CEFCU will also be collaborating in these efforts to serve the community with both content and fi nancial backing. What’s most important about this change (besides the signifi cant increase in quality ANDREW A. RAND programming available each day) is that viewers, members and major donors came Chairman, IVPTC Board of Directors together to make it happen. WTVP survives and thrives when all of these elements are part of our actions today and our vision for the future. Speaking of the future, we can also look forward to a fi fth broadcast channel dedicated solely to remote learning. Once again, this venture will be the result of public need being addressed by fi nancial resources. You’ll be hearing much more on this development soon. In the meantime, we’re listening.
