ALICE Tomography Section: Phase-Space Measurements and Analysis ALICE Tomography Section: Phase-Space Measurements and Analysis Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Mark Gerard Ibison September 2013 Abstract The technique of phase-space tomography applies the principles of tomographic re- construction to the diagnostics of particle accelerator beams. It is one of the few methods capable of mapping phase-space in detail, using instrumentation commonly available on research accelerator beam-lines, that is, beam profile imaging and variable focussing magnets. This thesis studies the effects of space-charge in the particle bunch on the measure- ment of transverse phase-space, in the horizontal and vertical dimensions, by the beam tomography method. It applies a novel `comparative' method of using quadrupole to- mography scanning to look for these effects, over the length of the diagnostic section of the injection line which transfers the electron beam from the ALICE accelerator to the Electron Model for Many Applications (EMMA) ring at the Daresbury Laboratory. Simulations of the full tomographic process, from beam profile imaging to reconstruc- tion, are developed in the particle tracking code GPT. These are used to investigate space-charge effects, in support of the experimental studies. The concept of `normalised phase-space' is described, in the context of tomography with a very limited number of views, presenting its advantages as applied to a specific type of reconstruction algorithm, the Maximum Entropy Technique. This study examines the feasibility of re-using the reactor facility for accelerator-driven systems research by re- placing the fuel and installing a spallation neutron target driven by an ex- ternal proton accelerator. MCNP5/MCNPX were used to model alternative, high-density fuels and their coupling to the neutrons generated by 230 MeV protons from a cyclotron striking a solid tungsten spallation target side-on to the core. Low-enriched U3Si2 and U-9Mo were considered as candidates, with only U-9Mo found to be feasible in the compact core; fuel element size and arrangement were kept the same as the original core layout to minimise thermal hydraulic and other changes. Reactor thermal power up to 2.5 kW is predicted for a keff of 0.995, large enough to carry out reactor kinetic experiments. EMMA (Electron Model for Many Applications) is a proof-of-principle demonstration of a non-scaling, fixed- field, alternating gradient accelerator (nsFFAG). Although nsFFAGs are related to cyclotrons and scaling FFAGs, the normal requirement is broken that the orbit radius scales with beam energy at all azimuths, meaning that a large energy variation can be provided in a small magnet aperture at the expense of no longer having a constant betatron tune; this has the potential to reduce the cost, and increase the reliability and flexibility of future intensity-frontier accelerators. We present results of commissioning of this accelerator at Daresbury Laboratory and discuss its merits compared to alternative approaches to delivering high-intensity hadron beams, in particular for use as low-cost c. 1 GeV proton drivers for accelerator-driven subcritical reactors and for the DAEDALUS neutrino project. Whilst significant effort has been expended in achieving larger extracted beam energies and currents, to date SINQ remains the highest-power cyclotron in operation.

Minty Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Stanford, CA 94309, USA Frank Zimmermann CERN, SL Division, 1211 Geneva 23, Switzerland We describe commonly used strategies for the control of charged particle beams and the manipulation of their properties. Emphasis is placed on rela- tivistic beams in linear accelerators and storage rings. After a brief review of linear optics, we discuss basic and advanced beam control techniques, such as transverse and longitudinal lattice diagnostics, matching, orbit correction and steering, beam-based alignment, and linac emittance preservation. A variety of methods for the manipulation of particle beam properties are also presented, for instance, bunch length and energy compression, bunch rotation, changes to the damping partition number, and beam collimation. The different pro- cedures are illustrated by examples from various accelerators. Special topics include injection and extraction methods, beam cooling, spin transport and polarization.
