The Significance of Hope Calvary Nurse Spotlighted in the Film, Defining Hope

The groundbreaking documentary Defining Hope debuted across the U.S. in November 2017. Carolyn Jones, Director and Executive Producer, wanted to use this film to tell a story about people weighing what matters at the most fragile junctures in life, and the nurses who guide them. It follows patients with life-threatening illnesses as they make choices about how they want to live, how Stay in Touch with Calvary much curative treatment they can tolerate, what they hope for and how that 718-518-2000 hope evolves when life is threatened. It reminds us that we have choices in how we die and the importance of making advance directive plans well ahead of time. facebook.com/ calvaryhospital/ The film prominently features Diane Ryan, RN, a nurse who works at Calvary’s 200-bed Bronx campus. She shares candid insights about caring for her linkedin.com/company/ patients and their families, her work as a hospice nurse, and how she deals with calvary-hospital/ her own serious health challenges. calvarycare To learn more or to find a screening near you, please visit: http://hope.film/.

Dear Friends, An elderly woman leaned heavily on the arm of a man I took to be her son; they were trailed by several young people in their late teens and twenties. They’re here to see someone they love, I thought…maybe her husband, his father, their grandpa. I could see the anguish on their faces. Every day I am reminded how fortunate we are to have so many friends and supporters of our mission. I know of no place like Calvary anywhere that serves patients and their families at such a fragile time in their lives. Standing in the lobby on any given day I have observed family members of all ethnicities and all ages entering our facilities. Some are accompanying their loved ones arriving via medical transport on stretchers – where our amazing staff makes sure they are settled in their rooms receiving CalvaryCare SM in 15 minutes or less – truly extraordinary. You see, at Calvary, helping patients and families cope with these very stressful times is what we do. Other facilities may deal with patients at the end of life, but do they really understand all of the nuances and crises that may arise and the difficult dynamics in play. I would suggest they do not. But at Calvary, this is our sacred mission, our staff’s passion – to soothe and ease everybody’s pain. Nobody should suffer at the end of life – EVER! Not patients nor their families – and why should they when there is a place like Calvary that has been down this road with many families and patients for over 100 years. While we know there is much anguish and heartache taking place floor to floor, room to room – we work to diminish that pain and suffering. How fortunate we are to live in proximity to a place like Calvary where we have access to this unique care across the metro NY area and in our homes. Truly, there is a CalvaryCare option for everybody whether as an in-patient or at home. And for all that you do to support the provision of CalvaryCare to our patients and families, I thank you. I thank you for all that you’ve done, all that you continue to do and all that I know you will do within your own ability to support Calvary. Without you and your generosity, it’s an unfathomable fact, that Calvary couldn’t exist. With Gratitude,

Timothy P. Barr Executive Vice President PS. Our new website makes it easier than ever to support the Calvary mission. Learn more at http://www.calvaryhospital. org/ways-to-give/. Read on to learn about the many ways that Calvary is helping people who need our care!

Calvary hosted our Annual Spring Donor Reception at The New York Botanical Garden on May 1st. Nearly 280 people gathered at the picturesque site to hear the latest news from the Hospital as well as enjoy the Conservatory, a buffet dinner and an all-women classical music trio. Two family members, Lynn Milito and James R. Waters, shared their experience with CalvaryCare SM for their father and aunt, respectively. “When terminal illness threatened to douse my father’s spirit, we knew Calvary was the only place that would allow him to continue the quality of life he deserved. He had visitors 24/7 from our family and his firefighter ‘brothers’. Calvary gave him the place to celebrate all that he loved – with dignity, faith, and plenty of laughter. Dad would often say ‘being at Calvary is like dying and going to heaven.’ How prophetic.” — Lynn Milito

In May, nearly two years after we finished restoring a 135-year-old Torah scroll (No. 515) on permanent loan to Calvary from the Memorial Scrolls Trust (MST) in London, we dedicated the new mantle cover for it. This scroll is one of 1,564 Torah scrolls salvaged from World War II. It is one of only 20 in the greater New York area today and among the very few MST scrolls that have gone to non-Jewish recipients. Calvary’s restoration project was made possible due to early significant support from the Charles R. and Winifred R. Weber Foundation. Educating the Jewish and mainstream communities about halachic end-of-life care continues to be an important outreach program at Calvary. • Calvary was a proud supporter of the Westchester Jewish Council’s 42nd Annual Gala in February. • We sponsored the 29th Annual Bikur Cholim Conference (Visiting the Sick) in April at UJA Federation of New York for nearly 200 attendees. Calvary representatives Rabbi Rachmiel Rothberger, BCC and Saraa Adelson, RN, led two comprehensive workshops on “Visiting with Someone at the End of Life.” • Rabbi Rachmiel Rothberger was a speaker at Molloy College’s 10th 1 Annual Palliative Care Conference. To learn how you can support our care of Jewish patients and families, please contact Leslie Bernstein at (718) 518-2018 or [email protected].

Calvary Hospital has just added its newest “employee” to its Bronx campus, Banjo, a facility assistance dog. Bred and trained at Canine Companions for Independence, Banjo is a 3-year-old Labrador/ Golden Retriever cross. Above: Banjo with a patient As an expertly trained facility dog, Banjo partners with a human facilitator working in a health care, visitation or education setting. Facility dogs are different from typical family pets; they receive extensive and specialized training and are partnered with professional facilitators to primarily provide structured, practical “task oriented” interactions to groups of children and adults with disabilities in health care, education, and other professional settings. Banjo was matched with his Calvary facilitator, Shannon McCourt, LCSW, during an intensive two-week training program in Long Island, New York. Shannon is responsible for handling and caring for Banjo. In fact, he lives with her. Banjo’s primary role at Calvary is to help people decrease their stress. In the few weeks since Banjo joined the Hospital, he and Shannon have been enthusiastically received by everyone at the 200- bed Bronx campus, the largest of Calvary’s four inpatient locations. Canine Companions for Independence provides expertly trained assistance dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities. Calvary Hospital > Crossroads Spring 2018 > Page 15 Supporting the Calvary Mission

Because of the generous and ongoing support of many wonderful donors, Calvary continues to deliver outstanding care to our beloved patients. We are also able to share our expertise with thousands of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals from around the world who come to learn Calvary’s unique model of palliative care. There are many ways to support the Calvary mission. Here are a few ways you can provide comfort, care and compassion to over 6,000 patients and families: • Tree of Life A gift to Calvary’s Tree of Life ensures that a loved one’s name will exist in perpetuity with the lifetime of the Hospital. For more information, please contact Sandrina Fernandez, Development Associate, at 718-518-2039 or via email at [email protected]. • The Storrs Society Storrs Society members are passionate about their continuous commitment and generosity to the Calvary Fund. Become a member by making annual gifts of $1,000 or more. For more information, please contact Tricia Reyes, Director of Annual Giving at 718-518-2076, or via email at [email protected] • The Society of 1899 Calvary Hospital was founded in 1899 by dedicated volunteers with the supporting gifts and bequests dating back to the turn of the century. For more information on becoming a member or other planned giving opportunities, please contact Elizabeth Edds Kougasian, Esq., Director of Major and Planned Gifts at 718-518-2080 or via email at ekougasian@ calvaryhospital.org. • Foundation and Corporate Giving Calvary depends on the support of dedicated companies and foundations that understand the importance of our work and mission. Despite limitations on insurance coverage and reimbursement, Calvary is a vital, growing and indispensable part of the healthcare landscape. For more information, please contact Leslie Bernstein, Director of Foundation and Corporate Relations at 718-518-2078 or via email at [email protected]. • Annual Awards Gala Calvary will host its 35th Annual Awards Gala on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at The Pierre Hotel. Since 1983, this annual event has raised millions of dollars to support our many programs and services that positively impact our patients, families and the community. For more information, please contact John Dougherty, Events Manager at 718-518-2285 or via email at [email protected].
