City:______State:______Zip:______Imagine Wanting to Learn More magine that you are in a small, remote village in Africa. There is no electricity in your village, and your days begin with the rising of the sun and end with the setting of the Isun. Even so, days are long. Without the distractions of modern conveniences, you spend your day working beside members of your family and village and spend hours in conversation with those that surround you. These conversations are very important. Without regular schools and without the ability to read, everything is passed on orally. From time to time, preachers of the Gospel come to your village on a Sunday. The preachers spread themselves out among many villages and only occasionally are able to come to you and share the teaching of God’s Word. They read the Bible to those in the village and then they teach what God meant when these words were said and what they should mean to you in your village today. In the following days and weeks, you meditate on and consider these important words. In the still darkness, you ponder their meaning and pray that soon you will have the opportunity to learn more. Imagine that while you lay on your mat in the tiny African hut, you hear a voice. It’s not in your tribal tongue, it’s in English, the language that you have learned in order to be able to communicate with people from other tribes. Someone is reading the Bible and talking about what it means. You run to that hut and you see a number of men, women and children surrounding a little box that was left by one of the preachers. A from Sunset in Lubbock, Texas, had given one to an African preacher, and he was leaving it in the village so that your village could study and learn in his absence! It has buttons on it, a small green light and the voices of Bible coming from it. You find out that it has the Bible on it, as well as World Bible School lessons, the classes of the Sunset International Bible Institute, Christian songs and so much more. You sit for hours as the Word of God and biblical teaching pours over you. The next morning, you see the player sitting on a stone in the center of the village. You are told that it soaks in the sunshine and this gives it the power to play for hours and hours. Suddenly, the lack of electricity means nothing. The little box doesn’t need it. There will be more Bible teaching tonight. You can’t wait. You can stop imagining. The little box is now a reality. Sunset is raising funds to send thousands of these solar audio players to remote villages in Africa and plans to eventually send them throughout Africa and around the world in different languages to those who crave the Word of God and Bible teaching. Seven hundred seventy four million adults in the world cannot read. They could not read the Bible if we were to put one in their hands. There are one and a half billion people in the world without electricity. They could not listen to the Word of God and Bible teaching if we were to send them audio CDs or radios. What’s the answer to taking the Gospel of Christ to these remote villages? Hand-held, solar-powered audio players with the Bible, Bible teaching and ministry helps. Sunset is seeking partners to join us in providing these solar players to those who need them the most. For $500, you can send one of these units to a remote village in rural Africa. This covers the cost of the unit, the materials and distributing the solar players to the hands of those who are waiting to hear the Word of God preached in their village. Just imagine what this will mean to those who hear the Gospel preached day after day in their village. 4 • Sunset International Bible Institute -Chris Swinford, Vice President for Advancement Phase 1 Distribution Points for Solar Players

Sunset International Bible Institute • 5 New Workers for Senior AIM rian and Betty Garnett came in August 2013 to Sunset International Bible Institute to become a part of the faculty with a focus on Senior BAdventures in Ministry (SAIM). Brian grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and became a Christian in 1972, baptized by ‘69 Sunset graduate Delbert Bradley. The next year, 1973, Brian enrolled in the Sunset School of Preaching. He met Betty upon arrival at the Sunset congregation and that began a courtship leading to marriage on December 29, 1973. After graduating from SSOP in 1975, they moved back to Halifax to begin an outreach to the northern shore where there were no congregations of the Lord’s church. Brian asked the Christians to put their loose change into apple juice cans to raise $1,000 for missions in that area. That goal was met! Brian and Betty worked in Nova Scotia for 23 years and then moved to Camp Wood, Texas, in 1997, where Brian worked with the local congregation. In 2013, he and Betty moved to Lubbock to begin their Brian (‘75) and Betty Garnett involvement in Senior AIM. Their daughter Rebecca has been on staff at Sunset since 2009, working as an interpreter for the deaf program and with the women of the school. Another daughter, Amanda, was in the AIM program, working in Strasbourg, France from 2002-2004, and is now married with a family in Lubbock. The Garnetts have two other children, John and family in Edmond, Oklahoma, and Natasha in Portland, Oregon. Brian continues to work with the Camp Wood congregation as their missionary to the . He will continue to travel there at least two times per year, balancing that outreach with his teaching involvement in Senior AIM. Beginning in 2014, he and Stuart Jones will be teaching courses for seniors five days per week with one course Monday and Wednesday and another on Tuesday and Thursday. On Friday one of the two courses will be repeated to meet the needs of the students who cannot attend full time. Betty is working with Cecilia Jones in the office to aid in the adminstration of this growing ministry. -Stuart Jones, Director of Senior AIM

(Sharing the Good News with Arabic World) ince September 16, 2013, Sunset has been distributing materials in Arabic over the internet to the Arabic-speaking Sworld. At the website ar.sunsetonline.org, Sunset is giving away three books in Arabic and English with plans to offer four more very soon. By advertising directly to the region of the world highlighted below, 36 users from 11 different Arabic-speaking countries have registered on the site and have full access to these materials (Syria does not allow for this type of advertising at this time). The site also offers interaction for those that are seeking the truth with Arabic-speaking Christians. Sunset is committed to spreading the Gospel throughout this difficult- to-reach region of the world. Please remember those working with the ministry in your prayers.

6 • Sunset International Bible Institute SUNSET PUBLISHING IN CHINESE unset continues its commitment to make quality materials available for ministry preparation around the world. Our study guides are helping to train preachers throughout the globe and our commentaries are Sraising the competence of many Bible class teachers in the United States and internationally. To date we have portions of our materials in such languages as Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Khmer, and Telagu, just to name a few. Recently Thomas Goracke, a ‘95 alumnus, has been heading up a project to translate the Sunset library into the modern Chinese language. He and a team of people have worked very hard and with little financial assistance to bring to fruition their dream of making Sunset’s materials available to a billion people. By the grace of God and with the help of some committed supporters, we are happy to share with you some of their most recent accomplishments. Ed Wharton’s THE CASE FOR HISTORIC Available in Print and Online in Chinese Those who have studied at Sunset and any who have read this material know its value for affirming faith and establishing an understanding of the reasonableness of Christianity. Today this book can accomplish these same things for Chinese speakers around the world, especially in China. This book is available through the Sunset External Studies (http://www.extensionschool.com) and can also be downloaded in e-reader format on the internet (https://www.cnepub.com/386506). It is a joy for us to think of all the good this work can do for those searching as well as for missionaries who are looking for resources for their work. We are also excited to announce that Ed Wharton’s book, The Church of Christ, which examines the distinctive nature of New Testament Christianity, is in the final process of formatting and will soon be available for distribution. Using this book, students can be pointed toward a fuller understanding of God’s will and plan for the bride of Christ. Our next book in queue is Abe Lincoln’s work Acts of the Apostles. Soon Chinese readers can gain a fuller understanding of the early days of the church and its expansion throughout the world by exploring Abe’s unique and trustworthy exposition. The Chinese translation team is also currently working on The Epistles of John, The Book of James, The Christian Home, and others are planned after their completion. We anticipate these books being a resource to the Chinese-speaking church as well as to our missionaries who are seeking to take them the Gospel. We do need your help to accomplish this good work. If you are interested in helping to support this work, perhaps sponsoring one book for translation and publication, please contact us for details at [email protected]. Above all, pray for this vital work. -Tim Burow, Dean of International Studies Update From his October Sunset’s work in Cuba hit a milestone Twith record enrollment in the three ministry training programs currently taking place. • Seminar Training: 36 students • Bachelor’s Degree: 21 students • Master’s Degree: 10 students In April 2013, we had another graduation of the Seminar Group where 20 men received their graduation certificates for having completed the Seminar Program. Mary worked at Sunset International Bible Institute for 29 years and was actively involved in the Sunset Church of Christ. She worked as secretary for the faculty for many years, typing, filing, keeping student transcripts, making coffee, and setting the tone for the day. The last years of her service at Sunset were spent as secretary of the Advancement office. When you walked in the office, you were met by Mary’s smile and “How can I help you?” She smiled and hummed during the work day and enjoyed bringing homemade desserts for everyone’s birthday. She would ask, “What kind of cake or pie do you want for your birthday?” Mary was a dedicated sister in Christ who will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and co-workers. Sammy Flanary September 11, 1940 - July 11, 2013 Sammy R. Flanary (‘74), 72, trusting in the word of Jesus, passed from this life to eternity on July 11, 2013. He was surrounded by his family and friends. Sammy taught junior and senior high school in and Indiana for 12 years. In 1966, he began preaching and doing evangelistic work among in southern Indiana and Kentucky. In 1972, he left public education and trained for full-time ministry at Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock, Texas. During 1974-1996, Sammy and Mary began a life of missionary work in both domestic and foreign locations. In 1997, Sammy began his current work as Missions Coordinator with the International Division and field representative for the Advancement Department of Sunset International Bible Institute. This role kept him on the cutting-edge of mission work. His heart was in the foreign mission field which led him to travel extensively to Greece, , Ukraine, Egypt, France, Singapore, as well as many other countries. Sammy gave his time, his money, his energy, and his heart to the work of God at Sunset. He will be missed by his family, co-workers, and friends around the world. Bob Martin December 6, 1937 - July 24, 2013 Robert (Bob) Verne Martin (‘67), 75, was born Dec. 6, 1937, in Floydada, Texas, and went home to heaven on July 24, 2013. Bob was proud of his military service and enjoyed many hobbies and jobs throughout his life, but nothing gave him more joy than preaching the Word of God as a Church of Christ minister for over 45 years. In the early years of video recording, Bob was directly involved in setting up, designing, reproducing, and keeping the equipment and the Sunset studio working. His sense of humor made it easier for the faculty to spend long hours in front of the camera. Bob really did know something about everything related to video work. If there was something he didn’t know, he would soon find out how it was done or who could do it. As new technology became available, Sunset counted on Bob to go “out with the old and in with the new.” Without Bob, Sunset’s video ministry would not be what it is today.
