LARRY KRAMER: My name is Larry Kramer. We are in my study, in my lover’s and my house in New Preston, Connecticut. SS: How old are you? LK: I’m 68. SS: Mazel tov. What’s today’s date? LK: That I’ve lasted this long is a major miracle. SS: And today is? LK: November 15th, 2003. SS: Well, Larry, you’ve been interviewed many times and you have a lot to say, and what we really want to do is ask you the questions that you probably have not repeated ad nauseum before and that, maybe, more of an internal conversation from people who were inside ACT UP together. So we’re not going to be asking you these generic questions or things that anybody who is interested can find other places. I just want to ask you a few background questions. When did you family come to this country? LK: My father was born in this country, and his mother was from Russia and no one knows where his father was from. Flora) Reynolds Price is a writer of serious religious fiction whose unique evangelium reaches beyond orthodox Christianity for some of its deepest expressions. At the heart of his work is a line of radiant, threatened protagonists whom Price calls “sacrificial people. .lambs in whose blood we bathe, whose blood we drink . in the sense of the god whom men kill and eat.” And the nature of such physical and spiritual grace—its swift destruction and occasional, surprising redemption—is one of the most crucial, recurrent mysteries Price explores. As sinner, battler, victim, object of Grace, and vehicle of revelation, Price’s central type surfaces memorably in characters such as Milo Mustian ( A Generous Man ), Todd Eborn ( Love and Work ), Rob Mayfield ( A Great Circle ), Neal Avery ( New Music ), Raphael Noren ( The Tongues of Angels )—even Price’s father, Will ( Clear Pictures and the sketch “Life for Life”). N ARRATIVEM A GAZINE . COM Reynolds Price A P R O F I L E by Lacy Crawford I TWOULDHAVEBEEN an auspi- cious meeting indeed, if Reynolds Price could have thought of some- thing to say. He was twenty-nine years old, just returned from a year in England, pausing in New York City. The year was 1962. It was springtime, late May. Just a month earlier, his first novel, A Long and Happy Life, had been published by Atheneum and had appeared in its entirety in a single issue of Harper’s. Now he was watching from a high balcony seat as his friend Eudora Welty presented William Faulkner with the Gold Medal for Fiction at the National Institute and Academy of Arts of Letters. Price was surprised by how small Faulkner appeared on stage, how all but silently he spoke. When the cere- mony finished, Price found himself alone on the sidewalk, and there, alone next to him, was Faulkner. At the time, every Southern writer stood to be compared to Faulkner, and Price was no exception. He was not an unreserved fan of Faulkner’s work, and the young author had heard that the great man could be cold. Still, there they were. Price was a Southern boy with a novel. In seven weeks he would be dead. Forty-four years later, Edward Reynolds Price is the author of thirty-seven pub- lished books, and he smiles to recall the young writer he was on that spring afternoon in Manhattan. -

Gavrila All Rights Reserved i ABSTRACT Dr. Jane Barnette , Advisor This study offers an exploration of Larry Kramer’s outsider persona, and how that persona affected both his writings as well as public perception of the author. My argument utilizes specific texts that provide insight into various facets of Kramer’s persona, both public and private. A critical analysis of Faggots, several activist texts from the Reagan administration, and The Normal Heart provide the case studies from which I analyze Kramer’s persona(s). This thesis analyzes these works and is informed by deconstructive terms, particularly those of Paul de Man and Jacques Derrida. In addition, Philip Auslander’s notion of persona provides the definition of a term that is continually explored in each of the three chapters. The outcome of this text is not whether Kramer has an outsider persona, but how that persona developed and became a permanent feature of his writings and public appearance. Kramer’s persona changed drastically in just a few years, usually in response to cultural events affecting him directly or though his community. In the conclusion of this study, I do not merely restate my argument but show, through recent writings, how Kramer’s persona and the public’s response to his words still are relevant today. -

[This essay appeared in Studies in the Literary Imagination, Volume 35:1 (Spring, 2002)] Victor Strandberg English Department Duke University THE RELIGIOUS/EROTIC POETRY OF REYNOLDS PRICE Although Reynolds Price’s first novel, A Long and Happy Life, has sold over a million copies since it won the first William Faulkner Prize in 1962, it was not until 1999 that he burst into really world-wide eminence. At that time, he joined his contemporaries John Updike, Joyce Carol Oates, and Toni Morrison in receiving what Morrison calls “the anointing,” which is to say that on December 6, 1999, Price found himself on the cover of TIME magazine, guaranteeing that at least one hundred million people would see his name on that cover. Unlike Updike, Oates, and Morrison, however, Price’s face did not appear on the cover; instead, Price’s name was next to a Renaissance portrait of Jesus, with a text that said “Novelist Reynolds Price offers a new Gospel based on archeology and the bible.” Inside the magazine, this cover story begins with TIME”s statement that "A great novelist and biblical scholar examines what faith and historical research tell us after 2,000 years and emerges with his own apocryphal Gospel.” As pleasing as this “anointing” was to Price’s admirers, there are two problems with this statement. First, although Price has indeed searched the apocryphal books of the Bible, which he does believe deserve more respect than they have often received, it is misleading to call his translation of the Gospels “apocryphal.” For some forty years he has painstakingly, line by line, written his own translation of the Gospels with a meticulous eye toward legitimate Biblical scholarship, thereby earning the widespread respect of the community of such scholars. -

Popular comic books that broached the subject of HIV/AIDS during the U.S. epidemic elucidate how America’s discourse on the disease evolved in an era when elected officials, religious leaders, legal professionals, medical specialists, and average citizens all struggled to negotiate their way through a period of national crisis. The manner whereby comic book authors, illustrators, and publishers engaged the topic of HIV/AIDS changed over time but, because comic books are an item of popular culture primarily produced for a heterosexual male audience, such changes habitually mirrored the evolution of the nation’s mainstream, heteronormative debates regarding the epidemic and its sociocultural and political implications. Through studying depictions of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in popular comic books, alterations in the heterocentric, national discourse emerge revealing how homophobic dismissals of the “gay plague” in the early 1980s gave way to heterosexual panic in the mid-1980s, followed by the epidemic’s reinterpretation as a national tragedy in the late-1980s. -
